View Full Version : Tequila?

So then, until this weekend I'd only tried tequila as part of a cocktail.
One of my US based friends left a half bottle during her last visit so I thought I'd man up and do some traditional slammers with salt and lime wedges.

Utterly sensational!

As a result I am now exploring the world of Tequila as it's something new. Just bought some Jose Cuervo from Waitrose in their sale (£12 for 700ml!).
Are there any other aficionados on here who could offer me some suggestions on ones to try?

:nerd: Don Julio Anejo is a Coro favorite. CLICK HERE (http://www.foxnews.com/leisure/2011/02/17/worlds-best-tequilas/) for a list of the top stuff.

BTW, There's a world of difference between top shelf tequila and "value" tequila. It you're going to get into it, go for the top-drawer stuff! :41:

I have never found tequila to be anything special. I've tried it with the salt and the lime before, and was disappointed.

To be honest, i think the reason some types of tequila have little worms in is that the makers thought 'Meh, couldn't make it any worse....'

So how should tequila be drunk TJ? Neat, cold or with lime etc?

I have tried it with salt and lime and whilst I love lime I won't be doing it again as it covered up what was a very nice aftertaste from the Tequila. I keep saying to my wife that we need to sort out a nicely stocked booze cabinet, there will be some money dropped in there I can tell you.

http://www.myemoticons.com/images/objects/beverages/martini.gif Well sir, it depends on what you're drinking. If it's the good stuff, you can drink it neat, room temp or chilled, or chase it with salt and lime if you prefer.http://www.myemoticons.com/images/objects/beverages/margarita.gif

But if it's the cheap stuff, like what chico8060 nightingale drinks, which I don't recommend, then you need to drink it as fast as possible or bury the taste with anything available - such as grape fruit juice, lots of salt and limes and your choice of a chaser, or if you prefer, use it to make a tequila sunrise or margarita. http://www.emotty.com/images/emoticons/108.png

It can be very costly to make unfounded assumptions like that. It's not the first you've made about me (or of other members i've noticed). I hope you don't do that all the time, you may upset someone you'd best not.
If there's anything i cheap out on, it certainly isn't alcohol....

I have most of a bottle of Jose Cuervo Gold in my drinks cabinet, which i'm irrationally hoping will age like cigars. Other leading brands I have also tried are Sauza Blanco and Sierra Silver. Aside from a strange obsession that tequila makers have with putting colours in their names, i have yet to find anything special about tequila.

Please make no more bold assumptions like that. It would be a little like me calling you an asshole............

I unfortunately really don't enjoy Tequila, no matter how its drunk. Give me a bottle of Sambuca any day! Mrs Detroitwaves however, and her friends are all born and raised in California, so spend most of their adult life growing up with Tequila. Due to this, everyone thinks they have the perfect bottle of Tequila to convert me. All have failed.

However, from what I understand, TJ is correct. The difference between top shelf and value tequila is apparently huge. The other big difference everyone mentions here, is that silver tequila is apparently 26 times better (a rough estimation) that gold. No one here does tequila with a wedge and some salt. Its always done cold, and straight. I can't speak for everyone, but everyone I seem to know in California, wouldn't touch Jose Cuervo if they could avoid it. Its deemed the lowest of the low here, and smelling it I can see why! The one everyone always seems to ask for here is Patron Silver. I tried it one, but was advised rather than to shot, to sip it slowly. This was the closest I ever came to liking it. There is also a Tequila bar here just down the road called Te'kila, that boasts one of the biggest Tequila bars in the world, and it is in fact, a very good looking bar. On the bar girls advice, I tried the Partida Blanco, as this was her favourite. It didnt have the usual smell that Tequila normally seems to have, however...It still made me want to be a little sick in my mouth just from smelling it.

Probably not exactly the advice you were looking for, so my apologies....Maybe take a look at the brands mentioned though, and try some of the gold and silver counterparts and see which you prefer.

Patron Silver is an occasional tipple of mine, not overly expensive and is a really well made sipping spirit to enjoy neat. Rather have a single malt to be honest but Patron does make a nice change sometimes.

Tequila is very underrated by so many. If u enjoy malt whisky and have an open mind and explore the world of the vast array of aged tequilas that are become available, welcome to my world and enjoy. Hic

My sister stayed in Mexico for 4 years and on our visits across I was in a few different tequila bars.
By good luck, the fact that my sister and husband spoke the language fluently, and an excellent barman, I was lucky enough to have a taste tour through a number of different varieties.
My initial surprise soon changed, after all if my National spirit has numerous brands, qualities and tastes, why the hell shouldn't Mexico's and indeed the same with Vodka in Russia etc.
I agree with Senor Coro, don't knock it till you've delved into it more deeply. Plenty folk like malt whisky. A rather sweeping statement, no?
I'm sure there are some that they are not so keen on. Such is the case also with tequila, from what I learned there seem to be tequila equivalents to what, in whisky we would differentiate as blended, deluxe and malt. All slightly different, some I loved, some I hated. Matter of taste but certainly, I'd have thought, something to suit most palletes.

Try Herradura Anejo, try it neat, on the rocks, or mix a double with the juice of a lime and some sugar, thats good stuff!

It's also very good at room temperature .... As you'd drink a malt whisky

Patron is one of the nicest I have tried, not the cheapest but on of the nicest IMO. There is amnother one produced by Sammy Hagar(I think). I have heard that it is also very nice.
