My understanding from talking to the guys at the stores is that there is already up to 5 years age on a cigar before it's released for sale. The seal date on the box is the year of release but I don't think there is a year of manufacture stated so it's quite difficult to actually figure how old a cigar is.

All production is released for sale as soon as it's boxed. They do not have the facilities, or desire in Cuba, to tie up a lot of potential income in boxes in warehouses. The only ageing that occurs is in the tobacco leaf, before rolling, and the only regular cigars with 5 years ageing of the leaf is the Cohiba Maduro 5 series. The box code on the bottom of the box will give you the date of manufacture.
Some importers may of course hold back stock for ageing and later release. Like the aged cigars H&F have released for sale, and at the same price as new stock.

:hmmmm2: Ummmm, I'm not certain about the "5 year age" you've been told. The Edition Limatadas and other special productions puros, like the regionals, have only 2 or 3 years aging before they become puros, and the regular production puros have less. Thus, the MC EL 08 had 2+ year aging on the leaf (not the puro) when it made into a fine puro. According to what you were told, this would mean they were rolled and boxed in '05/06. Also, I believe the boxes are dated and coded when the puros are placed into boxes, rather than when they are released to the pubic.*
But what the hell do I know, I just a simple Hombre for SoM, Mexico!:noidea:
Perhaps one of the Aficionados here that own "The Book" can shed some light on this subject.
:bandit: Name TJ, TJCoro, and that's news to me!!!
*I left out the "L" for grins.

Indeed a bible of cigar smoking. I think they are still available at Alfred Dunhill in bourden house, 50 pounds. The author is from hongkong, probably can get you an idea how serious these people are...to the level that I myself can never understand :S

There's a great site here (http://www.flyingcigar.de/) by Nino who's a pilot and blogs his cigar excursions. He went to MRN's house and he happened to have the SIGLO XXI humi just sitting in his garage....that's the $100,000 humi with 2000 smokes in it. Only 21 ever made and unatainable and this guy has it in his garage!!:eek:
