I chose him for my avatar because he lived in Deal in Kent. My adopted town.

There is a house in Middle Street, a gentrified street in the town near the pier - mostly 16th Century smugglers' cottages, now something of a well-tended gay quarter - with one of those commemorative plaques on the outside wall marking him as a local celebrity and film actor.

If you get talking to some of the older actor-muso types in this town, the stories about his antics and how he spread it about with the chaps are extraordinary.

So here's to Charles Hawtrey because - apart from an IRA bomb that killed a number of Royal Marines bandsmen in the late 80's - my town doesn't have much to show beyond Charles Hawtree's plaque.
