Name some of the worst cigar smokes youve had.

Mine has to be a Villiger

http://www.simplycigars.co.uk/simplycom/images/villigertubo1.jpg

These were gastly. Imagine a hamlet cigarillo, englarge it to 38 ring gauge and you have one of these. Yuck, I gave my second one to a mate (to which we collectively condemned it)

The second was a Nat Sherman 1400 series (cant recall the name, the foot was square-ish). Just a lifeless smoke! I seldomly bought another from my local store as it was all they had (that I was willing to buy), again it was just boring, really hard going, kept going out. overall just pooy, glad the shop stopped selling them.

Cohiba Siglo 2

Hold your horses, I love this cigar to death, My cohiba count so far is 19 so Ive had a fair few of em. But ive had one bad experience with a Siglo 2, the cigar was so tight, ridiculously tight, no smoke could even get through, someone at the factory was having a bad day id imagine.

Partagas Serie D No4

This was my first and last (currently) Partagas. This kind of put me off partagas, talk about first impressions. The smoke was really un-fun, hard to draw on, un-fufilling puffs of smoke, slow stupid burn, didnt like it. I hope for Partagas' sake that it was just a one off. I dont dislike partagas, but this first experience havent made buying another a top priority in my cigar experimenting tenure.

What are some of your bad smokes / bad smoking experiences?

Worst (more accurately: least good) cigar I've had so far has been a Diplomaticos No4. I must add that I've only ever had one of these, so its hardly a representative sample... The draw was very tight, my eyes felt that they were going to pop out at one point! It started okay, and the flavours weren't unagreeable at all, it just took up all my energy after a day of travelling to just get the stuff through...

On the plus side, it lasted over an hour because of how slow the going was.

You must have got real unlucky with the D4 Mr. B:frown:.

What about your sad stick?

Surely that must be up there mate:smoke:

Worst I've had was a snide RyJ No3 in Cuba. Made the obvious mistake of buying a pack of three tubos off one the hotel staff. Couldn't get a draw at all.

First one was great funnily enough:cool:

Easy one this. The worst so far this year was the R&J short Churchill. After a couple of good reviews on the forum I purchased a box of ten and they were bloody awfull.Completely one dimensional smoke and thank god i never bought the box of 25.

I would like to think I got a bad box, but I did smoke a few of them and they were all the same.

Worst cigars ever was about 3 Punch Punch I bought on holiday, and again thankfully I did not buy the box of 25.Had pieces of twigs in the filler and the majority of them looked as though they had been rolled by an arthritic chimp.

Had some pretty bad cigars - including a range of sticks from 1999/2000 which were shockingly poor.

Worst one was probably in LA last year. Local supplier reckoned he could get the unreleased Punch UK RE 2008. Every instinct told me not to touch it, but ...
couldn't help myself. Lit it, warmed it up & was able to completely bend the thing in half - underfilled ? Fake ? Don't know, but only smoked half an inch or so :frown:

If Partagas doesn't really appeal to you, I'd strongly recommend the Partagas Serie du Connoisseur, especially the #3. Replaced my beloved and long-gone Party Charlotte. Different profile to the SD4 etc. Try one :pop2:

Kind of agree with you Al. Almost every Punch I've ever had has been plugged. I had almost an entire box of 2003 Punch Punch that were plugged as well as a box of 2001 Black Prince. The only Punch DC I've ever had was also plugged. The frustrating thing is that when Punch smoke well they're bloody amazing. I guess I've just been unlucky :-(

You must have been very unlucky Stevieboy, I've never had a plugged punch - had loads of Punch RS11's, Churchill's, DC's and super selections and not one plugged, had a few plugged San cristobal's and found it improved with age, bad cigars? not really had a bad Cuban (never tried a guantamara though!) had some shit NC's in the state's recently, think one was a maconado, tasted like cardboard no flavour at all (may have been a bit dry) get the feeling I might be able to add to that list when I get to start going through me NC haul...lol :cowboyic9:

Oh i forgot about Punch, my few experiences with them have been average at best, granted they were tubos from ASDA, bought for the purpose of a quick smoke with a mate. Really annoying to keep lit and was not fun at all, the flavor was grimey too i recall, ill stick with the Don tomas grand coronas when I go to asda!

Interesting thread, Mister Bulgarin. Let me lament about some of the worst sticks I have endured, during my earlier years of getting into stogies.

First off - Hav-a-Tampa Jewel. Bought for me by a mate out in Vegas. The wrapper peeled, and it tasted literally, of wrapping paper. Weak. Watery.

Second lamentation - Swisher Sweet. Not swish, not sweet, just cheap & nasty.

Third lamentation - King Edward Invincible. I had four or five of these sticks before I read around the stogie subject, and they nearly put me off for good.

Fourth - Hamlet. In fact, they're not too disastrous, seeming as though supermarket buyers keep stocking up, they're relatively cheap, and cheerful. But comparing them with the real thing, they're a lame duck smoke.

--- Looking forward to reading more no-go's before heading off to stock up on the wish-list in a few weeks' time!

Cheers guys.

Those very same Villigers are what I bought in France a couple of months ago when I was out there with a coach party of teenagers and I needed to get an escape lol.

I brought these large Villigers home. I tried the first one in my shack. It was so rank I almost threw up. After two puffs, I destroyed it and the thing and its two brothers were crushed and dumped.

Bizarrely, the ash made me feel sick as much as the taste. It had no form, and the cigar was really constructed of factory-floor flakes. There was no majestic leaf-clutch ash that you get in a well-rolled cigar.

The D4 objection seems funny. They sex me up at every toke. I feel two feet taller.

Whisk - Rolled by an arthiritic chimp.

Wonderful stuff, Sir! :849:

I am with you on this. i use to hate punch. i dont love them but i dont seek them out. I did have a chruchhill the other night from 01 that was eraly good. also have had a 84 nifa and a few other years of nifas that i did not like. AS time is passing i keep trying and slowly tend to like them.

Fuente Fuente Opus X...Bloody awful, Bland Cigar..Don't beleave the hype:rolleyes:

yep. Fuente is one big hype. all of it is crap to me (sry if u like them). i use to hunt them down. they are hard to find and over priced even when in the USA.

And about the Psd4, i realy dont feel that is the best cigar form part or atleast to represent the line. Even a party short has more partagas flavor then the Pd4. If you ever get a chance to try a party lonsdale jump all over it.

A few months back my wife invited a work colleague of hers and her husband over for a few drinks and a meal.

Knowing that I was a cigar lover and in an effort to 'fit in/impress - I don't know' the poor lad brought some cigars with him...!?!

He explained that this is what he and his father smoked when they got together and that they both really enjoyed this smoke...!!!

From his jacket pocket he produced a couple of cellophane encased sticks...

The Don Alvaro...

Well F**K me this was possibly the worst cigar I have ever had the misfortune to smoke, I might have done better to leave the cellophane wrapper on whilst I smoked it in the vain hope that I passed out from toxic inhalation.

Never, and I mean never go near this cigar - pointless and horrible...

Cheers, HabanoSy

When he pulled the cigars out I hadn't showed him any of my smokes (this wasn't intentional as I didn't know he'd brought any 'smokes!!!' with him).

I waited till after we had, had the life sucked out of us by the vile things and then I showed him some proper Puros. I think he wanted a very large hole in the ground to open up...!?!

As for hitting him, No. I did however make him drink so much that he puked in their taxi on the way home... lol - sweet revenge.

Try smoking any cigar after brushing your teeth with a menthol toothpaste & rinsing with an alcohol-based mouthwash, or whilst sitting at the retirement afternoon tea party of your tee-totaller chartered accountant - why one would do any of this is beyond me :der: but it puts the concept of 'worst cigar' somewhat into context.

Under what one could consider normal / usual smoking circumstances the worst cigars I remember were a Toscanelli (besides, I needed to use a foghorn to be found in the house afterwards), a Churchill and a Robusto from Don Tomas or the Toro from Luis Martinez. I could literally feel the skin peeling off my gums.

Oh, and once I had one rather ghastly cherry-flavoured corona from I-don't-know-who on a weekend in Manila, but I was half off my trolley & the girl who gave it to me stayed the night, so, well......:smoke:

Simon-JG-hr

As I've generally been quite selective with what I have bought, I haven't really had any cigars which are bad/unsmokeable. Laying aside the Henri Wintermans (as I think it would be using artistic licence to call them 'real' cigars), then I'd have to say that my worst two cigars were both at this weekend's herf.

One, the Monte Open Regata was the only cigar that I have ever given up on at the half-way stage. It was not nice. I knew it would be mild (which seems to be from whence a lot of the flak it gets comes from), however, it just tasted unpleasant. :( A real shame, as it was a gorgeous looking cigar, and I'm usually quite keen on light and relatively mild smokes.

The other poor showing was from an NC - a Dunhill Petit Corona. Don't get me wrong, it wasn't a bad cigar at all (I'd probably rate it in the high 70s), it was just a little bit of a disappointment. I will definitely try another Dunhill, for some reason, I just want to love them... maybe it's the British connection, or the wonderful bands... who knows?

I am surprised I did not jump into this thread before, I thought I had. I know I have mentioned this before.

Ignoring generic, or "gash" cigars and Jimmeh calls them, I will stick to supposed "name" cigars. Well Jimmeh had read good things about the NC brand Graycliff. There is some provenance to this brand but who cares about that!

We stumbled across two offerings from them. The first we tried was the The Graycliff Château Grand Cru.

http://graycliff.com/images/products/11102_purple_president_det.gif

What a load of bo**ocks this smoke is. As I said before it is best described as a fist full of loose tobacco, poor tobacco at that.

To get them out of our humidors we did try the other cigar we purchased from the same brand, the Graycliff Espresso.
http://www.graycliff.com/images/products/black_110_DET.gif

For a NC it is not half bad! I have two in my humi at this moment. Not a bad social smoke at all. Well a social smoke for the sort of friend who does not warrant the company of a good Cuban, you know, somebody French. ;)

Worst ever was a Punch TUBOS. TUBOS what I don't remember. Bought from a tobacconist in Cowes (appropriate) on the Isle of White. Anyway guy must have seen me coming when I walked in and was dithering over buying a cigar. Told me he had a few he wanted to sell off cheap. Anyway I took an RyJ and this Punch. Got it back to where we were holidaying, intending to smoke it with a beer or two after the kids were settled for the night. Came the hour, unscrewed the cap and out fell a load of dust and tobacco bits. This should have been a clue, but no I lit the thing and it when of like a bonfire with bits of wrapper uncurling and burning everywhere. To say the cigar was dry wouldn't have been doing it an injustice .... the fecker was mumified!

Oddly, the RyJ smoked OK. We left for home the next day, so never did get the chance to half-brick a window.

In my view there is no such thing as a crap cigar - i believe that each size and make of cigar serves a purpose. For instance, you go out to the pub on a summer's evening and sit in the beer garden; to pull out a Cuban at this stage is a little showy, but a Villager is acceptable, therefore you smoke a Villager because you like smoking cigars.

But if I am hosting a dinner at my house and smoking indoors is encouraged, I would pull out the Cubans at the end of the evening and hand them out to all who smoked.

Bottom line is I enjoy smoking all cigars, so none are crap. Its just that some are more suitable for certain occasions than others.

Bottom line is I enjoy smoking all cigars, so none are crap. Its just that some are more suitable for certain occasions than others.

I see where you're coming from, I love the notion of smoking and all. I smoked a king edward last night because my mate got some for his birthday, the gauge and size was no bigger than a ciggy. I didn't mind smoking it, it wasnt too sad considering i've had hamlets, but I wouldn't call them a good cigar.

Those villigers were disgusting, unless I had a bad couple of tubes, they just weren't nice to smoke and were tossed like a german stick grenade :smoke:

I'd have to say one of the worst cigars I have "tried" to smoke was a flor de cano preferido. Was gifted 5 of them and none of them stayed in my hand for more than 1/4 inch. Now I know why they were given to me! Haha

Mine was a Gurkha Perfecto. I like an occasional 60 gauge, and the guay at Cigar.com recommended I try this. I can't explain quite how it tasted, other than just plain nasty! Almost dusty. Propper put me off, so I won't be buying any othem again...and the brand is so highly rated!
At the other end of the scale, best I have smoked is a 5 Vegas A Alpha, which is their 52 gauge torpedo. Smooth, strong to taste, burns perfectly straight, and even coped with the gales on the coast at Blackpool without any drama. A 10/10 for the brand.

A Don Ramos #1. Like sucking on a bunch of mild flavoured straws.
Very disappointing.

I don't like don ramos at all. I had a churchill recently and it was far too mild and very bland.

Worst smoke for me...hmmmm....toughy.

Wintermans Corona DeLuxe. Managed half of it...just...and took great pleasure in watching it burn in the firepit. Guantanamera Cristale was smokable, but won't be buying anymore, even at the low price! Punch Petit Corronation was awful, but only tried the one.

Anything from Villager I've tried has made me want to sand my tastebuds off.

One of the worst CC and the biggest disappointment so far was a Punch Monarcas, spongy feel and tasted chemical. Surely this was bad luck but unfortunately my only experience with this fabled vitola

Canary Island brand brought appropiratley by my mother-in-law:frown:. CC Quintero Nacionales has my lowest score, no discernable taste at all, had one & gave the rest away.:( Had very tight HdM Maries, that turned me blue & the Fonseca range don't do anything for me at all.

Have to agree with MrB here. We went into Maldon at the weekend, and deciding on a brisk stroll along the Causeway I bought a pack of Villiger Premium Tubos. Two to a pack and a legend on the side says that they're made from 100% Cuban tobacco. Absolute SHITE. Two puffs and I wanted to toss it. Four puffs and into the Blackwater it went. Didn't bother trying the other one, that went into a municipal waste-bin, packaging and all!

I bought a 5-pack of Jose L Piedra Cazadores when I started buying to try a few out.

Most of them unravelled; a couple burned really unevenly; all had very poor draw with little smoke and what little smoke I could taste was rancid and hung around the mouth for a few days afterwards, despite rinsing with Deep Heat mixed with rusty steel swarf.

Well, if you like a rancid taste in the mouth, may I suggest a new line of very profitable work?
