<!-- Post Body Copy --> I thought today I’d treat myself with possibly one of the best Cuban Cigars in current production, the Partagas P2. A Torpedo shaped Cigar, this beast of a smoke is elegant yet strong.

Partagas has always been about walking the walk as opposed to many other popular and celebrated brands who sometimes disappoint after all the hype. A full bodied range, the brand is known for it’s strong, old school Havana blend and flavours.

As some of you might be aware, I reviewed a Montecristo #2 a week back. The #2 has never been as consistent as it once was, and after smoking one I was left wanting a little more. It will be interesting to compare the Partagas P2 against the Montecristo.

This Partagas P2 that I am smoking today is from a tubed three pack. P2’s in a tube is a relatively new release from 2008 onwards. The Party P2 comes in a slick black tube with red lettering. The design guys at Habanos have done a sterling job there!

I’m not sure how old the Cigar is, but from the fact that it’s come in a tube, it would be a year old at the most. Therefore I’m expecting some fireworks from this; maybe a little too unrestrained… firecrackers ahoy!
Appearance wise, the wrapper was dark and sultry. Although I would not say that it was perfect, the head could have been put on slightly better but I would not expect any issues.

As usual, the cut and draw are spot on. The problems of the early millennium regarding draw are long gone. I can’t remember the last time I had an issue with the draw in an ‘06 or later Cigar. Lighting up took a minute or so, mostly because of the large girth of the Cigar.

The first few puffs greeted me with a powerful blast of pepper and toast. No question that this will be a flavourful smoke. Once the Partagas got into running speed of an inch or so in the pepper flavours mellowed slightly and everything got into cruise control.
The toast disappeared and a more espresso, mixed with Marmite flavour started to develop that was most welcoming. Still, the Cigar was burning magnificently without no need of any relights or touch ups.

Towards the half way point and onwards the Cigar still smoked beautifully. The body strong and the taste was in full flight. Peppery, with an espresso kick that just kept on going. I smoked the blighter to the nub. Tasty.

In the past I have smoked around 20 of these guys and this is one Cigar with some aging will come into it’s own. From my own experience, with only a year’s worth of storage the pure strength of the Partagas subsides only slightly, but just enough for the complexity and finesse of the Cigar to come through.

With the Cigar being in a tube, I can see the “Wine in the Bottle” effect enhancing these much more than they would in a normal Cabinet of twenty five that these smokes usually come in.

If you put the Montecristo #2 against the Partagas P2 there is no question which is the current better smoke of the two. If you are able to handle fuller bodied Cigars then I would suggest you go for the Partagas over the Montecristo as you will get a better, higher quality smoke. The time might come in the near future for the #2 to shine again, but for the moment the Partagas is the one to go for.

Fantastic review Steve

The SP2 certainly does pack a punch and the consistency is spot on. It never fails to please, whereas you rightly state the Monte No.2 can be a bit hit and miss.

It is one of my favourite go to Torpedos currently out there.

Once again, great review...

Cheers, HabanoSy

Nice review Steve. I'll have to buy a few to stick in the humi for a year or two.

Good to see a top mark for draw/burn - I can cope with a slightly one-dimensional cigar that draws/burns well a lot better than a poor drawing complex smoke. A cigar should be an effortless release from the world, sounds like this fits the bill (and not just on the draw). :cowboyic9:

Real nice review there, The P2 is a favourite of mine as well. I'm slowly working my way through a 5 year box of them, which are yummy.

First class review mate, and as previously discussed on the forum there is no doubt that the P2 is a torpedo to be reckoned with.

I have a box of Boli Belicosos Finos, and I wonder how the two would compare as they are both powerhouses of a smoke.

Brilliant stuff, and a brilliant cigar. Had my first at the Rum/Cigar/Chocolate H&F event on Monday eve and I must say it was lovely. Glad I have 6 at home :)

Packaging is gorgeously sexy too.

Partagas Serie P No 2 (Sept 07) Purchased direct from Cuba by a Good Friend.
A Lovely Rusty brown colour, a bit rough and toothy, but very appealing, I hadn’t had a Cigar for near on a week, so I was really looking forward to this one.
The Draw was perfect and it lit easily, instantly got nice marshmallow creamy flavours :marchmellow: Yum <shape id="Picture_x0020_4" style="visibility: visible; width: 102.75pt; height: 77.25pt;" type="#_x0000_t75" o:spid="_x0000_i1027"><imagedata o:title="018" src="file:///C:%5CUsers%5CSteve%5CAppData%5CLocal%5CTemp%5Cmsoh tmlclip1%5C01%5Cclip_image002.jpg"></imagedata></shape>
The ash held on, well into half way stage of the Cigar, when there were some slight profile changes happening, Cedar and Pepperyness appearing,
along with the, background Creamyness still there :cowboyic9:
<shape id="Picture_x0020_5" style="visibility: visible; width: 102.75pt; height: 77.25pt;" type="#_x0000_t75" o:spid="_x0000_i1026"><imagedata o:title="026" src="file:///C:%5CUsers%5CSteve%5CAppData%5CLocal%5CTemp%5Cmsoh tmlclip1%5C01%5Cclip_image003.jpg"></imagedata></shape> It was at about this point where the ash fell, although the burn was still spot on, I gave it a re-light to make sure it kept going correctly<shape id="Picture_x0020_6" style="visibility: visible; width: 102.75pt; height: 77.25pt;" type="#_x0000_t75" o:spid="_x0000_i1025"></shape> till the finish, which unfortunately wasn’t far away
Although some Oak flavours came through at this stage which was interesting, there was also a background Rubbery-ness appearing, time to lay it down I thought
This was a 90+ Cigar. Just wish I had a Lot more.

When one wants a cigar with Balls this would have to be it ! From beginning to end wonderful and yet it lets You know who's the boss. For an everyday smoke I think not as my pockets are not that deep maybe when the dollar gains some strength.

Yeah, me too, Macker. I enjoyed it to about halfway then it got a bit too powerful. I let it go out and smoked the rest after a big dinner.
Better, but still bloody strong.
Think I'm more of a medium kinda guy.

I just smoked the second P2 from a box brought back from Cuba two months ago.

These cigars are A SMOKE!

I have to say I do love the D4, but the P2 has a real earthiness that the D4 lacks.

Probably seems a strange thing to state, but when you smoke a P2, you KNOW that you are smoking leaf / vegetable matter / quality tobacco. I can TASTE the leaf and the soil, I am sure.

I'm not sure whether that makes sense, but with some cigars you don't necessarily get the leaf-y taste.

This is a pungent brute that lets out huge volumes of thick smoke.

It smacks me about - and that quality is definintely a major factor in a cigar I will stay with over time.

I LOVE a cigar to be strong and to beat up my senses. :smoke:

P2 is awesome, like a classy D4. Got some ageing (but also smoke great young).

ageing is the secret with the series P #2 . had a box that was only a few months old
and were OKAY but after two years they developed into an incredible smoke. since then have added several more boxes and plan to crack them open and 4 or 5 years and they should be priceless.
