Work were upgrading laptops so I 'won' one in a raffle for £70 that had previously been mauled by kids in IT lessons.
HP 510.
Nice enough machine for fiddling on here, and so on, but the sound keeps going off when the laptop has been running for a while and I have to shut down and switch on again for it to play music and Wing's London shoes correctly.
Any thoughts or advice please, computer men?

You know what I'm going to say.......
Put it in the bin and invest in some Fruit and raincoats!
D
I don't think I've helped much there! lol

Have you done a restore on it prior to anything else?
I'd wipe it all off and start again basically, but I suspect maybe the IT dpt already did that?

Is it on-board speakers that die, the headphone socket or everything?

If it is after a period of time sounds like heat/hardware problem.
Sound advice (sorry) to reinstall on any new (to you) computer.
There are good computers and cheap computers but there are no good cheap computers.... is that right:rolleyes:

Check the latest drivers are downloaded, if it's been wiped and reinstalled since it was given away it may have just been wiped and basic ones put back on.

Wow, men!
Thanks for all this.
The fruit and stockman's coat is in the future, you big teasing Myra.
Only the speakers play up when it plays up. Not the headphones.
The IT Dept had wiped it all clean for me.
I can check the appropriate drivers are downloaded.
They eventually come back on and work perfectly well.
Mark - I have shared your sucking a laptop advice with several and it for one mate it came clean.

Why not format the whole thing, start from scratch with a fresh Windows (:eviltongue:) install. I do this every year or so when things begin to slow down...always helps me

I could do, SBoy.
There's very little on the C:\ drive at present.
I wonder whether the techhie guys at work have already done this, tho.
I'll start by checking the installed drivers tomorrow.

I think I've cracked it with the drivers. No problem since installing them.
