The Monday morning visit to the Dickens House Wine Eporium, Rochester Kent would suggest that Robusto and myself have been out reviewing wine for an event we might have planned. However not the case, we had information given to us by Misterbulgarin (I believe) that the Dickens House Wine Emporium had a selection of Cuban Cigars on offer.

Robusto and myself meet at a Tesco car park just outside Dover and proceded to drive to Rochester about 1 hour away. Parking was easy to find and as luck would have it we parked within 200m approx of the venue thankfully, as it was raining cats and dogs when we arrived.

The shop was on the hight street and easy to find, once inside we were immediately made welcome by two gentlemen, both introduced them selves, however being old and brittle I only managed to remember Mr Tony Howards name apologies. Robusto explained that we where only there to look at and potentially purchase Cigars. We all chatted for quite some considerable time about Cigars which was great. Thanks guys.

Both gentlemen had a very good knowldge of Cigars. Price lists were well laid out between aged and non-aged cigars. It became apparent that we had not long missed a Cigar event at the Dickens House which had included a cigar roller brought in for the event by Hunter & Frankau, the event which had started at the front of the shop during the day allowing passers by to watch the Cigar roller at work, then retiring to the rear of the Dickens House courtyard in the evening, which is well laid out with outdoor furniture, BBQ etc. Tony showed us some photos from the event, which looked great, what a shame to haved miss that event. I invited them to come and have a look at the UKCF site and maybe put a few lines up about there buisness they seemed quite open to the idea, so if your reading this Tony, welcome. (I told them Deano was the main man)

The shop has two well stocked humidor cabinets (not massive but bear in mind wine is there main sale item) with Cuban Cigars they also carry a smaller line in NC's. Robusto purchased a Montecristo Petit Edmundo and I choose a NC which I have yet to try. We were also given a small booklet which outlined all the known Comfortable Outdoor Smoking Areas in the UK, which was nice of them.

Overall a worth while visit to Rochester and the Dickens House Wine Emporium. If you are ever in Rochester give them a visit and pick yourself a Cuban up. There are not many places in the UK that you could say that about, and for me that is the essecnce of The Dickens House, not a massive establishment in terms of cigars, but good friendly advice and conversation where you can pick up a quality Cigar. I wish I could do the same in my home town. I believe that where possible we should support all small outlets as Cigar retailers are becoming a rare breed in the provincial areas, London members being well blessed.

Robusto and myself then went down the road to a little cafe / deli sat in the courtyard and demolished a couple of cigars with coffees, and of course when the cigars were lit the sun came out, it enhanced what for me had been a more than worth while morning trip to Rochester. As always Robusto's company was great thanks mate.

It is worth bearing in mind that the Dickens House might well serve as a good venue for a HERF, the only down side was that there was no covered area should it be a UK summer, perhaps we could arrange something with them? food for thought, certainly plenty of wine at hand.

Please see some photos taken on the day, none inside, a derelict of duty on my part I'm afraid. Below is there website link:

I saw Myra Hindley being walked on a escorted trip up the High Street in Rochester once.... happy days in the Medway towns.

This wine shop sounds quite cool.... Kent (much like Northants up here) is sorely lacking in good cigar shops. We used to have a really lovely old fashioned one in Market Harborough which went over to internet sales. If they pulled out the interior when the shop was taken over it would be a crime. Now to buy anything more than the odd stick you have to leave the county..... and go to..... shock horror... Bedford or Birmingham and neither of those shops are great.

D

and in Dawg style:
"O flesh, flesh, how art thou fishified"... nice girl she was!

Good to hear that you are supporting your local supplier Dawg.I completely agree that we should be supporting the local tobacconists where applicable.

I am very lucky to have three good shops within half an hour of where i live, and although i don`t buy boxes of cigars from them, I will try any of the singles which are available prior to ordering a box online. They are a wealth of knowledge and generally will help you out where they can.

There are so many of the old traditional shops which are now now gone for good and I think it`a real shame.

yeah it's a rarity, id go out to say that this is the only shop like this in medway. The cuban connection was specifically a cigar shop, but went out of business due to the current climate, for being such a small shop, and for having a poor location, down the side of an alleyway. Such a shame I loved it in there

I've tried doing some detective work on the old Cuban connection store. Their phone numbers no longer work. The shop's alleyway's iron gate is always locked shut. I would go down everyday to check but Im not willing to.Ive googled around but cannot find any info. Ive also asked the local shop owners to ask if they know what happened to them. No one does, theyve vanished :(

Any ideas how I could get in contact with them? Phones are down, maybe if the shop IS shut...then it's put up for LET, then maybe I can get contact that way. Hmmm

Bulg

The guys in the shop talked about that other shop - and I think Drew knew it, too.

Rochester is an hour away from my place - same for Dog / Paul - so this will become an occasional trip out with the cigar in full spotlights. I might even take my lady as I think she should sometimes be permitted to look round shops.

Rochester looked a very pleasant place, especially in the High Street. I saw the second hand book store. No time to go there, and Myra had cleared off.

There was an astoundingly well-maintained public toilet. Incredibly fresh smell and shiny floors. There are some well dodgy ones in Deal and Dover, so this is - in all seriousness - a big plus to Rochester Council with coachloads of tourists turning up to look at Dickens.

The staff were great in the shop. One of the guys loves his cigars, which is just fine. The selection was well maintained, and - as Paul said - there are possibilities for a herf at the back of the emporium.

It's good to go off on another adventure with a cigar mate and talk about everything under the sun. Great trip out, Paul. :smoke:

I never really used to like rochester because it had ' no real shops ' but where Ive spent alot of time there in the past year ive learned to love the old shops, culture and even the people and the regulars. It's really a great place.

Where you actually from Robusto? Next time youre in Roch check out Fieldstaff Antiques, down the basement, there's some neat smoking memorbeila to look at. I even found a pack of Castella cigar cards, how unique, didnt get em though.

Deal, mate.

And how young are you? You mentioned you might be the youngest cigar enthusiast.

And Whisk - You lucky blighter with three specialist shops within half an hour. If Scotland has put off the onslaught of the corporate bodies in some way - and it seems like that when I go to Scotland - you are winning up there!

Wales also seems in a time-warp shops-wise... but in a really good way.

In the Kent within reasonable travel distance of me, every average town seems a carbon copy of the next.

In this town, people had celebratory parties when Subway set up shop. There are already about five sandwich shops in town, and every time a shop closes, it re-opens as a Clinton Cards, or clone thereof.

I was pleased when Son of Cigarsmoke signed up, I thought I'd lost the 'youngest' title at 21 - turns out I need not have worried. :biggrin1:

Anyone know if this place still sells cigars? I'll be moving nearby in a couple of months, so it might be worth getting to know the (only) local cigar merchants :)
