Being the humidor impaired (not for much longer!) newbie that I am, I was looking for somewhere to buy the occasional stogie to smoke that has a more varied choice than the odd tubos stocked by my local wine shop. A colleague suggested to give Robert Graham's a try and so I went to have a look at this shop this afternoon

This place has been mentioned before in passing in the Edinburgh cigar shops thread, but I thought a few more details might be interesting for anyone who might be passing thorugh Glasgow.

I was a bit disappointed by the size of the shop, which is quite small; no walk in like the Edinburgh one, if you have been to that one. The very friendly lady in the shop explained to me that they originally had a larger shop that was damaged in 2005 by afire in a neighbouring building and they only re-opened in Glasgow at the end of 2007. It seems like they are looking for something bigger for the future.

Having said that, the choice, for such a small place, is not too bad. I didn't jot down all that they have but I noticed a decent selection of the ususal Cuban suspects from which I choose a couple: Upmann, Hoyos, R&J, Montecisto, Cohibas plus a few other. Just a few NCs and I bought a couple of these too. Maybe not a terribly exciting selection, but the best place I have seen in town so far.

The service was great. I asked for a few suggestions "for someone who wants to get into cigars a bit more seriously" i.e. your truly , and we spent the next twenty or so minutes chatting about what they had in store, which might be good newbie cigars an so on. In the end I left with these (in a Humi Pouch):

(R&J Petit Princes, Dominicos Robusto, Monte N.4, Torano Petit Corona and Upmann Coronas Junior). The Dominicos wasn't one of the suggestions to be honest, but it was on offer and I wanted to give something bigger a try too.

I always enjoy shopkeepers who enjoy taking their time to help you make your choice without hassling you and this was definitely the case.

They also sell online (http://www.whisky-cigars.co.uk/) and I noticed the range they offer is pretty similar to what CGars has, if slightly more expensive; digging through the website I read that the guy behind CGars is one of the business partners, which would explain things.

It's certainly a shop I would go back to from time to time, although I suspect that once the humidor is there I'll probably buy more online following the great tips here.

Nice little sample pack you got there Maledetto...

All great cigars, never had the Dominico though (Torano budget cigar, I think...!?!).

Post up when you've smoked 'em to let us know what you think...

Cheers, HabanoSy

Thanks HabanoSy. Will definitely report back.

The Dominicos is indeed a Torano budget cigars; a few of the reviews I found around the web seem quite positive, so I hope I'm not disappointed.

Maledetto, did you not try the cigar shop up the road about 500 yards?

I cannot remember the name of it as it has been some time since i was in that part of the city, they used to have a good selection available.

Thank you for the tip, I didn't know there was another shop up the road.

I'm not in the city center that often but I'll have a look for it next time for sure!

I had a Dominico robusto a couple of weeks ago. I got it from my local baccy shop. Not a very well kept humi. I smoked it straight away.
Two thirds very mild, not a good burn. Last third went harsh, then went out, wouldn't relight properly. Hurled to the far distance.
Hope yours is better!

I visited the shop on Monday. Happened to be in Glasgow (extremely weird reason which would take too long to explain), and was just stood on the opposite corner. Looked around and spotted a 'Robert Graham' sign. Said to my mates, I'll only be a moment, but I've got to pop into that shop. I headed in, had a nice little chat with the lady, found out that I'd missed Mitchell by a day (apparantly he was due in on Tuesday) and I bought a little bottle of whisky.

As already said, a small shop, but there is plenty packed into it.

+1 on a great little shop. Popped in while i was in Glasgow a few months back, forgot to pack my cigars and wanted to get something. Got to the door at 1730 and the sign said closed at 1730. The lady behind the till was on the phone and waved me in. Had a quick look round and got a tin of Cohiba minis, most shops would have looked at their watch and said shut. Great customer service.
