A thread to discuss all things rum related.

Havana Club Anejo Especial. Bought last weekend at a Booths supermarket. I love those supermarkets, just a shame that they are only in the NE... :(

It was on offer at about £13.50 - a cracking price.

We all know how magnificent the 7 yo HC is, but this Anejo Especial offering by the Cubans seems to be a top drawer, value rum. It's my first bottle of it, and it works magnificently with Coca-Cola... I've yet to give it a run out on the rocks though.

All in good time, all in good time. ;)

A rum I quite like is Morgan's Spiced Rum. Used to be a very popular drink with coke up in Scotland about 10 years ago then kind of died away for years. Came across a bottle of it a year ago or so in the local supermarket so bought one.

Pretty sure most of you will have had it before but if not, try one if you see it in a bar one day, surprisingly good for a mass produced spirit and very smooth with or without a mixer.

Not sure if we've been here before, but...

Goslings Black Seal Rum is a mighty fine drop (Bermuda), and at only £15.99 from (most) local Sainsburys it's well worth checking out...!?!

The Beverage Tasting Institute awarded this drink a Platinum medal and it was given 96 out of 100... Get some in...!?!

Another Rum i like is, Flor De Cana Gold Rum from Nicaragua. It's zesty, sweet, and a buttery finish. A 1.75 LTR bottle goes for $19.99 in the states.

There is... though I do try to avoid it if possible... ;)

I'm fairly sure that one of Sainsburys, Tesco or Waitrose (if not all) stock it too. Just that I do like Booths, and it was a very good price.

Has anyone tried Sailor Jerry rum with a smoke, its pretty strong in flavour, i'd guess it would do well with a powerful stick?

I keep seeing it behind bars, and keep thinking, 'Should I....'

Unfortunately, I always seem to have just found a wonderful real ale when I spot it, and want to take advantage, lest I never see it on a pump clip again. I really must force myself to give Sailor Jerry a go at some point, I've read some good things about it.

I had some last weekend with a Monte Edmundo. It went very well. Sailor

I'm a bit late on this post but I recently bought a bottle of Diplomatico Reserva Exclusiva.

I've had rums before and never really found one that I enjoyed enough for sipping (got some of the Havana Club Anejo Especial, which is a good mixer). I thought I'd splash out on something a touch more expensive and I wasn't disappointed - really totally different from anything I've had before. Very heavy and sweet, almost like a liqueur, with loads of caramel and vanilla flavours.

Anyway, if you find any or fancy ordering online then give it a shot. I will be on the lookout for some Ron Zacapa myself, as I've read so much about it.

Olls.

Getting low myself, so will have to make another purchase soon...!?!

In Cuba, the HC 7 is several $CUC higher in price than the two "special" offerings, both of which are cheap enough to be given away to me at resorts and events.

Other good "mixing" rums from Cuba include Ron Caney <LINK rel=File-List href="file:///C:%5CDOCUME%7E1%5CMICHAE%7E1%5CLOCALS%7E1%5CTemp%5 Cmsohtml1%5C01%5Cclip_filelist.xml"><STYLE> <!-- /* Font Definitions */ @font-face {font-family:Verdana; panose-1:2 11 6 4 3 5 4 4 2 4; mso-font-charset:0; mso-generic-font-family:swiss; mso-font-pitch:variable; mso-font-signature:536871559 0 0 0 415 0;} /* Style Definitions */ p.MsoNormal, li.MsoNormal, div.MsoNormal {mso-style-parent:""; margin:0cm; margin-bottom:.0001pt; mso-pagination:widow-orphan; font-size:10.0pt; font-family:Verdana; mso-fareast-font-family:"Times New Roman"; mso-bidi-font-family:"Times New Roman";} @page Section1 {size:612.0pt 792.0pt; margin:72.0pt 90.0pt 72.0pt 90.0pt; mso-header-margin:36.0pt; mso-footer-margin:36.0pt; mso-paper-source:0;} div.Section1 {page:Section1;} --> </STYLE>Añejo Centuria and Ron Mulata <LINK rel=File-List href="file:///C:%5CDOCUME%7E1%5CMICHAE%7E1%5CLOCALS%7E1%5CTemp%5 Cmsohtml1%5C01%5Cclip_filelist.xml"><STYLE> <!-- /* Font Definitions */ @font-face {font-family:Verdana; panose-1:2 11 6 4 3 5 4 4 2 4; mso-font-charset:0; mso-generic-font-family:swiss; mso-font-pitch:variable; mso-font-signature:536871559 0 0 0 415 0;} /* Style Definitions */ p.MsoNormal, li.MsoNormal, div.MsoNormal {mso-style-parent:""; margin:0cm; margin-bottom:.0001pt; mso-pagination:widow-orphan; font-size:10.0pt; font-family:Verdana; mso-fareast-font-family:"Times New Roman"; mso-bidi-font-family:"Times New Roman";} @page Section1 {size:612.0pt 792.0pt; margin:72.0pt 90.0pt 72.0pt 90.0pt; mso-header-margin:36.0pt; mso-footer-margin:36.0pt; mso-paper-source:0;} div.Section1 {page:Section1;} --> </STYLE>Añejo Reserva.

Thanks for the info on the rums Cbob.Have tried a few in my time but not been lucky enough to try the Cubay or the Varadero; maybe one of these days.

I tried Navy Rum many years ago, made me gag... would Rum with a quality Cigar make the difference in taste?

Ron Zacapa, Diplomaticos are great rums but you could also try some of the other Cuban ones such as Ron Varadero 15 year old, or if you can find it some Ron Vigia anejo as well

Mount Gay Extra Old is always a good rum as is Doorly's XO, also from Barbados

I don't know if it is just me, but I just don't understand why would you drink rum with coke??? :der: unless you are on the beach in Greece and it is 1024 degrees hot!

I prefer the havana club anejo 7y old, no bloody coke and no bloody ice to mess up in my glass! :eviltongue:

sailor jerry has got its own specific sweetness, too much sometimes

I was once told that the only thing you should add to rum, apart from ice, is more rum:rock:

Just like good malt, the only thing to add is "an t'uisge," and more malt....

Since being forced to stop drinking whiskey by the quacks I've found a real affinity with rum although like crslaytor I wouldn't mix it with Coke. If it's a hot day or I'm looking for a long drink as opposed to a sipping drink I'll mix it with lemonade/soda water and a twist of lime.

My four personal favourites are;
Sailor Jerry Caribbean Spiced Rum
This rum has a really strong vanilla element to it that is even more apparent when taken with a mixer but adds a good level of sweeetness to it when drunk straight or with a twist. Although it's quite unique it's most similar brethren is probably Morgan's Spiced which is a good substitute if it's unavailable.

Ron Mulata de Cuba Añejo Reserva
This rum is fairly strong tasting yet smooth. If I were going to drink any of these four rums with Coke it would be this one as it's got a kind of spicy cocoa type feel to it that I think would work well. Out of the 2 Cubans listed here this is definitely the one with the bigger kick.

Mount Gay Rum - Extra Old
I first got into Mount Gay rum after a colleague found out I could no longer drink whiskey and brought me a bottle back from her native Barbados. This is a great rum that is woody and smooth but can be a bugger to get hold of!

Legendario Elixir de Cuba 7 Años
This is not strictly speaking a true rum but it is so sweet you can drink it by the glassful and it is a great compliment to a Monte No.4. This definitely doesn't need a mixer due to it's easily drunk flavour!

Got to agree loved sailor jerrys liked the vanilla taste! I seen a bottle of mount gay at our local wine shop did'nt seem to bad at £22 a bottle the lady who works there seems to be able to get her hands on enything she had a bottle of canadian ice wine a snip at £35 a bottle an it was only 350ml bargain lol!
