View Full Version : To Scare the Dogs - a Review of Private Stock Tubos No.3

Let me begin by setting the context. It is nearly the end of the long summer vacation, and for myriad reasons, I have neither the time nor space to burn a good longer stick.

Hence the many references to small tubos that you may have glanced over during the short time I have spent on this forum.

In the tobacconists this morning, I needed a pair of small sticks; my friend and I were having a light lunch and coffee, and needed a quick but pleasant burn. I spotted the dark red packaging, the tempting price, the reference to the Dominican Republic, and thought I would give the Private Stock Tubos No.3 a go.

My friend and I were lunching on the terrace of a bar, near a few chapettes accompanied by two over-energetic dogs. (Irrelevant, I know.)

Cutting was fine. The pre-light aroma was light, not oily or earthy as has been the case in recent CCs I have enjoyed. Ignition was easy, by virtue of the 30-gauge 'twiglet' format. The No.3 was medium filler, so burnt neither hot & quick, nor slow & relaxed.

Initial aroma was as one-dimensional as the initial flavours. I cannot say the PS T. No.3 was raw, but neither was it nuanced or subtle. 'Standard' is a suitable description.

Halfway, and the stick went out twice, despite regular draws. This sent my marks plummeting (it now rivals Panter Desserts and Dutch machine-mades).

Towards the final third, the bog-standard taste petered out, eventually lending a somewhat sweet finish. There was quite a lot of smoke at the end of the 20-minute smoke.

Not recommended for the connoisseur. Conducive to the irritability of black labradors. Deltawhisky--

Tanks for the review Deltawhisky.

message to self... avoid these!

By the way, any special Dutch machine mades you refer to there? I have a Dutch colleague who insists I should try some PGC Hajenius next time I am in Amsterdam... is he trying to poison me? :biggrin1:

Hi Mr Toscano.

I have not personally tried the Hajenius. But, from the Dutches I have tried, I can tell you that the overwhelming majority of them are pretty run of the mill. Quite earthy, often, but not complex.

I was out in Benelux last month, and the main Dutch machine-mades that I noticed were La Paz and Oud Kampen. And if you are still interested -

Thanks for the review delta. I think I'll join the queue for avoidence like the others - thanks for the heads up!

Didn't mean to scare anyone off, Mr J - quite an interesting little devil when you consider the cheap-as-chips // cheaper-than-a-bag-of-chips price tag.

Just ... don't draw too hard when it's finishing off. I leave tongue bite for my piping!
