I've been getting back into "The Last Waltz" by The Band which has got me exploring the delights of Neil Young, Joni Mitchell & Muddy Waters. All so good.

I was at a friends last night and 'the Night They Drove Old Dixie Down' came on her shuffle play. We then had an in-depth conversation about The Last Waltz ....it's a small world. NB I have nearly everything Muddy Walters has recorded (Chess reissues were a god-send) and have Joni's Blue and Ladies of the Canyon very high in my all time great album lists.

Having an embarassing evening on the music front.
Listening to a combination of mid-90s UK Eurovision entries, specifically Gina G's Ooh Ah... Just a Little Bit and Katrina and the Waves' Love Shine a Light (and Walking on Sunshine for a non-Eurovision bit).
I've also been pondering the lyrics of Mika - you know, the chap with a ridiculously high-pitched voice... I actually like some of his music, in an ironic way, (well, it's fun, if nothing else). I've also had fun thinking about his lyrics... specifically: why, given that the majority of his fan-base must be 10 year old girls, he has lyrics such as...
From Lollipop, which is perhaps one of the most innuendo laden songs of all-time... "Take a look at the girl next door; She's a player and a downright bore." There's something inside me which things the last word of the second line may have been censored...
From We are Golden... "No giving up when you're young and you want some..."
There's also a little bit of ABBA in tonight's playlist... Does Your Mother Know is in there... this is also ironic, as my mates are currently enjoying pointing out whenever we have a cheesy night on the pub jukebox... Which is all too often.

I have been on a bit of an 80s goth kick lately with the tiresome mingling with the (not so) great British public during my bus rides to work and back being tempered somewhat by the strains of The Fields of the Nephalim with the odd Sisters of Mercy track thrown in for good measure. A perfect antidote to the incessant drone of unmitigated drivel pouring from the tinny speakers of kid's phones, especially when backed up by earplug style headphones.

Hehe, I'd never have thought I'd be reading about the Sisters on a cigar forum :)
I was a big fan many moons ago, of TFotN as well to a lesser degree. Might just have to dust off First and Last and Always and take it into the car tomorrow morning.

This morning I decided to have a listen to something on the bus to work. I don't normally as at 7:30 it is pretty quiet with maybe the odd snore here and there but I needed waking up too.
I went with some Hayseed Dixie and the album, A Hot Piece of Grass.
For those who don't know these boys, they are 4 musicians from Nashville who started off with a load of bluegrass style covers of AC DC tracks, hence the group's name but have then moved onto covers of Kiss, Queen, The Rolling Stones (thier version of Paint it black is awesome), The Scissor Sisters and a fair few others. They have also done a album of their own stuff (No Covers). I have seen them live a couple of times, the last of which was at Rock City here in Nottingham where they were supported by Ed Tudor Pole (completely nuts but great fun) and stuck around afterwards to have a chat and beer with a couple of the guys.
They are loads of fun and if anyone find out they are playing near them then I urge you to go and see them, you might think "eh?" when you first hear them but I can guarentee that you will have a grin on your face before long.

I shall have to take a look, i quite like a bit of Rockabilly (along with the occasional bit of psychobilly - try The Horrorpops or Rev. Horton Heat). have you heard any of The Head Cats? Lemmy Kilmister's rock and roll band, some great Buddy Holly covers on Youtube but I can't find anything studio recorded yet.
This morning's bus ride was to the tune of Saxon, might go with a bit of Whitesnake or Tracy Chapman later depending on what sprits the denizens of the number 77 are in.
/*edit*/
Now I'm home and not sitting at my work desk with the heavily restricted internet access that our illustrious lords and masters see fit to bestow upon us mere mortals, I can post a video of another... I suppose you could call them a crossover of sorts, group I have seen a couple of times. 4 guys from Finland going by the name of Apocolyptica. All classically trained cellists whose first album was Metallica by 4 Cellos and this song is taken from that, Nothing Else Matters.
My wife and I actually had this being played at our wedding (3 years ago, our anniversary was somewhere between Monday and Tuesday - we got married on 29/2/2008  .) as everyone came in then the Metallica version afterwards.
Anyway, enough of my rambling, onto the melodies:

I like a bit of psychobilly too, and this thread reminded me: have you heard any Bourbon Crow? Wednesday 13's (Murderdolls, Frankenstein Drag queens, etc) country band. Someone told me about them ages ago, but totally forgot until I read this, think seeing "psychobilly" and "bluegrass" in the same place reminded me:tongue:

hey gavin,
for me, i'm talking about 'classic' prog: yes, emerson lake palmer, king crimson, soft machine etc etc....... though my main love would be krautrock from the early 70's!!! as for industrial, it has to be throbbing gristle, coil, (very early) psychic tv (basically anything that involved the guys who invented the term & the original experimentalists, genesis p-orridge, peter 'sleazy' christopherson, chris carter, cosey fanni tutti)!!! when i was younger i loved anything connected with 'industrial'...... nine inch nails, ministry, revolting cocks, LARD, spk, test department, die krupps..... have to say i grew outta that stuff years ago (still love NIN though)!!!

I'm glad you added that :) I've grown out of a lot of music over the years but there's no denying that Mr Reznor is a very talented man. What do you think of the Pretty Hate Machine remaster? I think that overall the more electronica based industrial has stood the test of time better than noisy guitar driven bands like Ministry.
With regards to Prog, I like a lot of prog through the ages from Yes, King Crimson and Jethro Tull (Although they didn't like the label) through to bands like Rush, Marillion, Ayreon and The Tangent.

If you want to make your wife/lady happy take her to a Seth Lakeman concert. My wife and daughter and a chum are off to see him in St Albans this week, I got the tickets for them, he is good but too many doe eyed women in the audience for me.
Having said that I shall be doing the same at Tift Merrit at the Borderline on Monday!

His also playing at the Folk by the Oak festival in the grounds of Hatfield House which I'm going to with a few mates. Trying to decide which cigars to take with me. I reckon it'll be a good day for smoking! Tift Merritt is great, enjoy the gig.

Listen without Prejudice Vol 1 - I really think this is a classic album. Great song-craft, a unique sound-scape and a single minded musical vision. I don't care about the composers public persona, this album will go down as one of the greats.

Chicane - Offshore (Ambient Mix)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uCEN4OCJ0DI
Chicane is possibly the greatest dance/trance producer of all time, in my opinion. There is not a single song I don't like, he has the ability to mix various genres of music together to create his own unique style. Offshore (Ambient Mix) is such a relaxing song, makes me want to light up a cigar in order to achieve a state of trance.
Try it out if you want to unwind :)

I currently have Gotye's new album 'Making Mirrors' playing on Vinyl. Sounds amazing. I got an advance copy of the album last year and loved it, and sounds even better on vinyl. He is now, rightly so enjoying an insane amount of success...In the past few months I have seen this video for the latest single go from a couple of thousand plays to 58 bloody million!!! (Seriously....5...8....million!).
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8UVNT4wvIGY
I don't think he is enjoying as much success in the UK as of yet, however, if not, trust me, it will only be a month or two before this blows up the radio there, if it hasn't already!
I'm also not usually one for covers of songs, especially great songs...however, just in case you're not one of the 45 million (yes again, 45 million) people to have seen this cover of the song...watch...it is simply fascinating!

Definitely give it a go, along with his album from a couple of years previous. I don't think many people had heard of him prior to the last couple of months, he has managed to keep pretty under the radar.
The songs on each album are all pretty diverse, which I love. The new album has some blinding tracks on it, 'I feel better' being my particular favourite.
