I thought I'd bring in a thread that attracts a lot of post on a music forum I visit a lot.

It has more longevity than 'Who's your favourite artist?'. You can post when you listen to something different.

I'll start...

Over the last few days, I have downloaded and listened in the car to (with great pleasure) an iTunes Essentials collection called The Great American Songbook.

Come Fly With Me - Frank Sinatra
Every Time We Say Goodbye - Rod Stewart
The Way You Look Tonight - Michael Buble
Ol' Man River - Paul Robeson
It's Only a Paper Moon - Rufus Wainwright
Unforgettable - Nat "King" Cole & Natalie Cole
Stormy Weather - Etta James
They Can't Take That Away from Me - Diana Krall
Over the Rainbow - Judy Garland
Love for Sale - Shirley Horn
Night and Day - Cole Porter
It Had to Be You (Big Band and Vocals) - Harry Connick, Jr.
Someone to Watch Over Me - Linda Ronstadt
Beyond the Sea - Will Young
I Got Rhythm - Bobby Darin
Let's Call the Whole Thing Off - Sarah Vaughan
Misty - Johnny Mathis
Let's Do It (Let's Fall In Love) - Alanis Morissette
My Funny Valentine - Chet Baker
The Lady Is a Tramp - Sammy Davis
Summertime - Ella Fitzgerald
Singing In The Rain - Gene Kelly
In The Mood - The Puppini Sisters
Mack The Knife - Robbie Williams
As Time Goes By - Dooley Wilson
I've Got You Under My Skin

I prepared four of these songs for a private solo function last Friday. I enjoyed putting them out so much I decided I would learn some more when driving around...

...When I can get my younger son to stop playing endless Drum n Bass!... I have to admit I have warmed to BENGA a lot since having it rammed down my ears... The relentless sampled rhythms do drive me up the wall with most DnB...

Since swapping recordings by Transatlantic post with Larrysputnik of our own bands, and discussing some influences and likes in our own written music, I ended up recommending The Stone Roses and Ian Brown to Joe. The chat made me get four Ian Brown albums back on my iPod and I've been driving around in deep joy back and forwards to work. My favourite tracks are Dolphins Are Monkeys, and F.E.A.R.

I had to get a burst of Elton John on my way back from London yesterday so spent a great 90 minutes listening to his last CD The Captain And The Kid, and then a CD from 1992 called The One.

Elton John is not left unplayed for long by me.

I also enjoyed the CD Larry/Joe posted me last week VERY much. An intelligent crew playing TIGHTLY. Neat. :smokin:

I was close enough to Elton John to lob a big book at him, and many unkind bastards said I should have done.

Hello,

Have not really gone much into the music purchasing stakes recently. Have a fairly decent collection of classical chillout cds. Tad boring I know. One of my favourite contemporary pianists would be the Italian Ludovico Einaudi. Like also groups like IL Divo, Blake, soloists Mathew Ansell, Cortes, etc.

New version of the A Ha track the sun never shines on Ireland, as opposed to the sun never shines on Tv.

Tipping it down here at the mo.

Have just got home from London and enjoyed a solo smoke to The Bends.

Radiohead feature large in this household. My wife adores them, and particularly Thom Yorke who released a solo album about a year ago. She once saw them at the Royal Festival Hall in London and rushed to the front just in front of Thom Yorke. She held onto his trainer round his ankle for the whole of one song. She is a perve about him. If I were so inclined, I think I'd be after Ed O'Brien (sp?). Mind you, she pestered him - Ed - in a theatre bar when he was playing with Neil Finn from Crowded House at a gig. Neil Finn's first solo album Try Whistling This is so, so good.

My fave Radiohead albums are The Bends, Amnesiac and Hail To The Thief. I've never appreciated Kid A which sold shitloads over a decade ago.

I bought The Bends, so am really responsible for making my missus a Yorke perve.

As Gabriel has mentioned, the weather is taking the piss yet again, but then again I guess it's to be expected at this time of year :)

I'm just chilling out with a mini bucket of decaff and looking through the list of cigars available that Monte has put up in the For Sale section, there's definitely a few teasers there, but unfortunately I'll have to wait another couple of weeks yet, which really sucks :(

Hey, thanks for the plug Bryan. It's funny, I've actually had your CD in the player in my car since I got it. I love listening to recordings of live music.

Anyone else prefer live CDs to studio CDs of their favorite bands?:41:

Willie1
01-10-2008, 01:46 AM
I don't have any preferences as such, there are some songs I've heard where the studio recording has sounded much better, than it has live and vice versa, I think that it just depends on the song and the artist :)

I think you'd like it Bryan...didn't think Plant could do harmony-type singing, but he claimes Krauss taught him how to do it and their voices complement each other's beautifully imho. A real delightful surprise, and the choice of tracks is superb.

I may be downloading soon, I guess.

We have never recorded anything in a studio in our band. Every recording is live. Sometimes with mp3 mics (hence un-mixable). Sometimes through the desk with multi-channels. Our bass player has a very good home studio and in 2009 we will set up and record some stuff for a few days at his place. I can't wait.

You can hear glitches in live stuff, but as we are a live working band, those recordings reflect what we can/cannot do rather than studio trickery. The recordings certainly get us bookings, as do the videos on YouTube. They have brought in LOADS of enquiries and bookings. :cowboyic9:

Listened to eight of the tracks on the way to work and the new Verve is GOOD! One track sounds like Comfortably Numb (Floyd) to me. Not saying if that's good or bad! The tracks are very stoner and they just keep coming.

Agree! I think what he has released since then has been disappointing. There's an album called The Lost Songs which pre-dates White Ladder and is great.

Saw David Gray live at Hammersmith in about 2000 and he was brilliant.

As were Elbow at around the same time. Wonderful stuff.

I was listening to The Deftones when driving home after a gig this evening. I think they are a brilliant band. Very unlike my usual choice of music. Love them because the guitar work is so balls-y and distinctive.

Re: David Gray
Gotta admit that I found that album ok, but it's aged poorly imo. The repitive beats etc are a little annoying now - I believe he did it all himself, which is why I found his last album (not the most recent) - Life In Slow Motion, much better - the production is of a much higher quality. Some v. good tracks on it, e.g. Hospital Food.

Yes, Deano. Terrible when he passed on as I learnt lots from his programmes.

At the moment, I've got the French radio on. RTL 2.

Our FM service down here in East Kent lets us get French FM channels very clearly. In really clear climate conditions, they can block out the UK channels.

Much of their output is that garbage French publicity stuff, but I like sloppy romantic ballad-type music.

If I listen to it from time to time in French, I won't be suspect like a man who likes Mariah Carey...

Good French crap music (my term) is so much more kitsch that anglo-saxon stuff with the result that it's engaging.

Anyway, I just sit here pitching the stuff and working out the chord structures as it pumps over the washing up on a foul day.

Last night was a so-so gig, so we amused ourselves by dropping in country riffs on guitar and piano into full-blooded soul numbers.

Sorry if that doesn't make sense - but it amuses us in the group.

Nobody noticed, and I love that. All dressed as bloody ghouls in the audience.

One woman was suddenly getting a stripogram, and the 'fireman' coming on to the woman was screamingly effeminate, so the whole thing looked like a lesbian showcase.

Fabulous distraction for a slow night. :smoke:

Have slobbed out this afternoon with two live music DVDs I bought in Canterbury this morning.

One is a few years old and features The Band - a group I adore - and other icons. Have watched it several times but never bought my own copy.

Only ?4. Bargain!

http://theband.hiof.no/band_pictures/last_waltz_DVD.jpg

One is a just-released DVD of Elton John's Red Piano stageshow. The DVD is as lush and camp (surprise!) in Las Vegas as it was at the 02 last year. He's doing the Red Piano gig at the 02 again next month.

Nice finger action. Always has his great team of faithful musos in the band.

Greatest Hits pushed out again, but he has a good bitch about Celine Dion, the silly old cow.

I have a soft spot for good songs regardless of genre... and there are some great country tunes. Its also interesting to hear people like Glen Campbell doing covers of things like the Foo Fighters. I lived in America for a while though and the bar is set pretty low quality wise with some of the country stuff.

Go for the country thing Bryan...it'll be great.

HOWEVER... My ex was a country nut... she used to sing for Scotty Moore's Band (he was the guitarist on Heartbreak Hotel, Hound Dog, Blue Suede Shoes etc) and whilst he is a legend hes a grumpy bastard and really can't play anymore.

I was playing for New Year - like you, Drew - so watched Elton John Live At The O2 on ITV Replay.

I have just about everything the man has recorded.

He sang very well on NYE. I think his singing can sound very ropey.

He does, however, come across vocally as a parody of himself these days. He also alters the vocal melody lines willy nilly, so the Your Song put out bore no resemblance at times to the original version most people will know. I'm used to this carry-on, but first timers at one of his gigs might have wondered what was going on.

I thought he and the band played very well, and Will Young has a good voice.

I've seen his Red Piano show right there at the O2 and the vast cinemascope screen is so over the top it knocks you out because you can't refuse it.

Boiled down to an ITV night - with that bloody girl getting in the way as a hostess - the whole effect was lost.

See - He's going at it still at nearly 62.

Myspace and Facebook are blocked at work, but I'll give that a listen later, Drew. :cowboyic9:

I'm going to be listening to a hell of a lot more music now that I've bought a home cinema system. I don't know why I haven't got this sorted out years ago. I guess it's because a significant amount of dosh goes on instruments, recording gear (small-time) and PA. I've test-driven a few systems round at friends' houses, and the 5.1 mixes of live gigs are awesome.

We share all budgets in our house - but I can get what I want without any moans (cigars, amps, blah blah) if it comes from earnings from live gigs and not from the collective pot.

Although my missus jokingly dismissed this purchase (not yet arrived) as BOYS' TOYS, she'll be in there as soon as she can with every bit of Radiohead she has in any medium.

Meeting People Is Easy.
I can't wait to share Thom Yorke's upbeat sense of humour in surroundsound. :biggrin1:

Last night, I took to my friend's house DVD selections of Tears For Fears, Elton John, The Flower Kings, plus Cloverfield, 28 Days Later and The Day Today, through a system which I subsequently walked home, clicked online and bought. I was sold!

I cannot wait to watch bollocks like The One Show through the system when it arrives. And I'll get off on Carla in Coronation Street a bit more.

How the hell I let home cinema slip past me when I bought a fine TV last year I'll never know!

Drewmidorn
08-01-2009, 12:28 PM
That sounds awesome Bryan! A lot of the 5.1 mixes have the vocal bang centre and nothing else... this means you can strip the vocal out really easily and do you're own remix. Although you can't with Robbie Williams as he doesn't like his vocal being exposed. I don't think its because he's worried about people using it though! lol

D

Robusto
08-01-2009, 12:45 PM
I didn't know that, Drew. I may be trying it out.

I had to learn Mr Bojangles for a moment with our singer in the band's set, and ended up listening to Robbie Williams's version. I've never really listened to him before. He has an unusual voice...

My mate put on some remixed CDs including The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway by Genisis circa 1970, which I haven't listened to in decades. They really jumped out of the speakers, and there is a bee or wasp that was on the original release which now takes off and flies around the room in surroundsound. It's so OTT, but really fun!

Best bit - for me - is being able to hear the decay on keyboard sounds. It's wonderful! DVD live gigs are a better moment than the live gigs themselves.

02 gigs can be dreadful for audience sound.

(I'm not an over-intense goon about these technical things. Neither in home audio, nor in band kit nor keyboards. If I like them, I like them. No meaningful frowns).

After Cuba, I think I'll get a Nord.

Drewmidorn
08-01-2009, 02:27 PM
One of the coolest Keyboards I've ever played was the Hammond B3 thats on all the Bob Marley stuff at Island records... it was wrecked... broken keys the lot, but it sounded awesome. Mind you I was so excited about it I may have sounded as bad as it looked! lol

The Nord stuff is great. I love the stage piano. I'm afraid apart from my old Juno 60, toy piano and accordion I now use nothing but samples as I don't need to be able to take it out and gig it. Last time I played keys live was years ago. I think if I had to now I'd take out the powerbook and run all the sounds from Reason.

My son is combining software like this. To be honest, I am a player - but I know I've got to understand the tecchie side of it thoroughly to record/write/escape and fly at home and with other people.

I was classically educated in just about every way. Piano, Latin, indeed in all methods of learning. Fortunately I've had to undo that approach as a teacher and think about how anyone learns anything. To be frank, at the end of my spectrum, I have kids who cannot learn much at all, but one keeps trying.

I've written with very sympathetic tecchie friends over time, but have been a bit gormless about the studio processes because I knew they understood and could carry on without input from me. I sometimes see myself as Madge Allsop to Dame Edna, but at least I smile a bit more these days.

Now - at last - I have found a player mate who is a sensitive musician - and a very funky one - who also speaks exactly the same language. He will talk to me about the tecchie side of things, omit what is not necessary, and aims (without an Ofsted fuckwit pistol) to teach me something every time. We're aiming to get together every week, if possible, to record and write.

We swap Morrisisms. We have most of the CM 'scripts' in our heads, and we have an overwhelmingly similar world view. It is great.

I'm having to screw in BT Vision, Edna, but I'll cop for a listen of your Myspace, and will lob my Reverbnation thing in a bit later. I've done that before, but we have daily newbies (which is cool) so I'll bung in some sounds too to see if other musos are joining up, et aussi pour encourager les autres... :biggrin1:

Drewmidorn
08-01-2009, 06:29 PM
I never really wanted to be a Techno geek, but it was the only way I could record my songs when I was younger and over the past 15 years I've learnt a few tricks... however I'm still happiest working with an engineer...I'd quite happily never touch a mac again but its not really an option in the modern world where they want three hours of music written, recorded, mixed and mastered by yesterday... and all for sixpence.

Seriously though stick with the technology... not for itself, but because it will allow you to liberate your ideas. Its just another tool. I bet you spent ages in the 80s trying to work out the DX7 or M1 and then realised that really its simple and gets easier as it develops (leaving modular synthesis aside that is.... which is a black art if you ask me).

D

Robusto
08-01-2009, 07:15 PM
My first was a Korg Poly 800. It is still underneath my bed!

That was a real task for a piano player to bump over to a non-weighted plastic monosynth, but it was the thing to do, and the DX7 was exciting. I used to disappear to the music shop in City Road, Sheffield, and loll about and play for hours on one of those.

I agree with you. Technology liberates. I have never gone over to a Mac of any kind. Not through resistance because I know they are superb. I guess I've just got stuck with Gates, and have never saved up enough to go over to Apple. I will, tho. Both of my lads use them for media courses, so they want me to buy for them.

Cuba comes first, now!

I played your track several times whilst porking my BT Vision into existence and really liked it! Is that you singing? Very smuggler-esque, and Tom Waits is a friend! (I play Tom Waits to 11 and 12 year olds to wake them up and start thinking. Get them off the endless "new" Hallelujahs). Very nice hook. It made me think of the Scissors Sisters at one point!

Will there be more on there? Not had time to read the blurb, but noticed you'd written something about rum and cigars. Nice! And indeed it would be nice to knock back builder's tea and a D4 together somehow, sometime. :cowboyic9:

Here's my Reverbnation. The track I like best is Manston Marie because it's nonsense. Crap, even. There are a couple of non-ring blowing videos there, too.

I will force a couple of days for Aldous too.

I've been working with a songwriter tonight and we've been talking about Leonard Cohen, TomWaits, Jeff Buckley and Queen. lol

Shes a great writer but a little blinkered... possibly like your 12 year olds.

I find the argument that this x factor girl (who give her her due is an awesome singer) is a disgarce for covering a Jeff Buckley tune very funny indeed. The Buckley version is great... but its a cover! lol

Love the energy of the reverbnation picture. Looks perfect. I'm going to dip into it now.

Back in 1977 some of my mates were raving about an album called " the alpha band" by The Alpha Band.
I've just dug it out of my old collection and it's still a great album.
Not sure if they ever did anything else but for me it takes me back to the days when I had a lot more hair and girlfriends (And boy did I enjoy both, I love those hippy days)
Then of course kids and a mortgage set in and for a number of years I could'nt afford to do much at all. The stagnant years.

Now the offspring have flown the nest and it's time to start behaving like a teenager again.

The Alpha Band were on Arista Records featuring;
Steven Soles
David Mansfield
T-Bone Burnett
David Jackson
Matt Betton

I know these play on other artists albums but the wine is starting to weave it's magic and it's too cold to go outside for a smoke so I'll dig a little deeper tomorrow.

Thanks Larry, I'm genuinely humbled.

There is more stuff at my band's page which is http://myspace.com/abandcalledjean but thats much more poppy and some more at my page which is http://www.myspace.com/drewtracks but at the moment thats all JEAN too.

I'm going to pop some more stuff on the Aldous page as I record it... I only uploded the page this morning, as I finshed recording Smack Head Jack yesterday, so I'll let you know when stuff is up!

Thanks again. Its always really great to hear encouragement from people who don't HAVE to say they like it! lol Although my mum rang up to say she thought it was good and she usually just asks if everything has to be so loud!... to which the answer is of course yes!

D

Great sound. Can't wait to hear more aldous pinch too. :smoke:

I checked it out just now Drew. You're on a roll. It starts off resembling Tom Waits, and when it kicks in it's a lot of fun. Keep them coming! (Could you send me a link to download this one too? I want to turn my old bass player on to this when I see him on Saturday.) Cheers :cowboyic9:

very tom waits with a hint of nick cave. veering off slightly, has anyone ever seen a fu*ked up film about a loon who escapes from his mothers evil clutches, robs a bank, gives out sermons as a fake preist and ends up a front man in a progressive rock band that sound a bit like cave/waits, its a mad film called BAD BOY BUBBY. they banned it about 10 years ago.
from what I remember it was very wrong, very dark, but the band were amazing, a bit like 'the doors' on tamazipan.

Many years ago when my car was being serviced someone pinched the entire contents of my multi disk CD player which included 4 (ripped of) disks of an extremely rere Neil Young bootleg set of CD's and the twin disk Weld.
I recently got a new copy of Weld (don't think I will every replace the bootleg) and it's contantly on in my car VERY VERY loud.

In terms of tracks I particularly like Cinnamon Girl and am very proud of myself as I managed to download it onto my phone as a ring tone and I judge people by whether they can identify it when the phone rings.

I have also addopted one of his lyric's as my moto for life and I now realise it might make a nice one for this group as well;

"It's better to burn than to fade away"

Salut my good brothers and have a smokin weekend!

You know what amazes me and it shouldn't really, the amount of william blake poetry that seeps into modern musical lyrics, Im not on about the rubbish in the charts but a wide spectrum of decent bands and performers
have used blake. verve, dylan, the doors, jah wobble and many more.
I just find it a bit suprising the amount of artists in popular music that he has influenced over the past thirty years, when you would of thought the classical artists would of been more geared to a blakeist revivalism.
Good though..

what was the neil young set called?

I can't remember. I borrowed it from a guy I worked with who had bought it in Italy. It was a 4 or 6 disk bootleg in a very elegant box. The disks contained some really great tracks. Some of which have never released (only played live). I do have some of this stuff on an old Mp3 player and writing this remonds me I must go and get it off and secure it somewhere.

So thought I had better check in. Life is crazy with work at the moment as I am living and working in Ukraine, but have found myself really into a Russian gilr singer caled Glukoza, you can find some of her music on YouTube. It is electronic computer music and the latest song is a fun poke at the film War of the Worlds.
Check it out if you have time and let me know what you think.

Keep a smile on your face and a cigar nearby.

If you missed the compilation of John Martyn at the BBC last night on BBC 4 or if you missed John Martyn (which so many did and will come to regret) here is a great compilation which every music lover should enjoy.

He was a phenomenon in som many ways and this taster will remind me what I will miss following his death recently.
