Dust anybody?

Morning All,

I bought a Romeo No.2 yesterday and when i took it out of the tube, it had a light coating of a silver metallic dust to it, very very fine in appearance. it also had a few spots to it of the same substance, can anyone tell me what this is, im imagining bad storage, or maybe metal dust from the tube?? or is this normal any idea??

I think that it may have been down to bad storage or maybe bad tubing of the cigar itself, but I'm guessing that it's something that doesn't happen too often and so, perhaps it's just one of those weird one-off things :)

Its just the alloy dust from the tubes i would of thought,just blow the dust off and light im up.:smoke:

Right ho Deano. This is actually not dust or bad storage:

From the way you describe it this is most probably something called 'bloom' or 'plume' (it could be mould, but sounds much more like plume). It is a result of the oils in the cigar coming to the surface of it and crystallizing over time. Since it happens only if the cigar has been stored at a proper relative humidity, it is usually associated with well stored cigars with a bit of age. It also shows that the tobacco has a good oil content which will make it tastier. Because of this it is regarded as very desirable by most collectors who will usually buy a box of cigars with plume in an instant over the same box without.

In my experience with my experience with smaller tobacconists it is most often found on tubed cigars (beacuase the lack of air flow around it allows the cigar to age better.

I like the sound of this one the best. could be pausable as it a very small tobacconsist who i doubt sell very many premium cigars at all, but it was a very good smoke. thanks did64

Hola Dean.

If you google 'plume' you will find a ton of info. But from what you have said I'd be fairly certain that that was what it was. I have seen it often on tubed cigars, even in that kind of non-specialist tobacconist.

I would have presumed it was plume if it wasn't for the fact he'd said 'metallic'.

I find it often underneth cedar-lined cigars, the ones that aren't tubed but just have their own individual cedar wrap.

A quick brush off is all they need.

I brought a couple of undistinguished cigars back from my French holiday. They developed a silvery tinge after a couple of weeks resting in the humidor. Silver spots. I hadn't seen anything like it before.

When my recent Monte delivery arrived, I binned the offenders and cleaned my humi out because I didn't want the risk of my new babes being affected by this taint. I just presumed they had something wrong with them, so I took precautions. They were bargain basement Havanas comme on m'a dit chez le tabac and fairly tasteless, and I didn't want to be seen sucking a sparkler in my next garage vid. Too humiliating. :biggrin1:
