I've Vista on both my tower and laptop, and am thinking of upgrading to Windows 7. Has anyone else considered this option yet?

Just downloaded the W7 advisor, so shall see what is states.

I've been using various betas on and off, and Microsoft have sent me a free copy of Ultimate...but seriously, I would not bother spending the money if you already have Vista.

There really are no major changes, except a few GUI tweaks - it's probably the smallest incremental change they've ever made.

I think you'd be dissapointed for your monies. However if you do intend to do it, consider the family upgrade pack - 3 licenses are included which might be your best option.

Money? I was thinking a freebie, but researching indicates unless you qualify for a free upgrade (buying a Vista OS within the last few months) ya gotta pay:mad:

Cheers Deano for the impartial advice mate :thumb:

That's you buggered then Stevie

Dean, how the hell did you get MS to send you a free copy of Ultimate? You did not sign up to hold a launch party did you, perish the thought.

The thing I find with many of MS products is that the actual changes from version to version can sometimes be very small and not worth the bother. The biggest change for me was going from Windows 3.11 to 95. That was a huge change and one which many people jumped on quickly.

From what I have read the path from XP to Vista to 7 is not that great by way of innovation for the average user and as such many people are just not going to bother upgrading as they don't really need to.

I guess how many units are sold to private users will tell the tale.

Well I drew the short straw and ended up having to help my sis with her new MacBook Pro. Lovely made piece of hardware, even if it is a generation behind the latest high-end laptops, the price you pay for a "closed" hardware system I guess.

Mac OS X is so frustrating. If you are a non-techy then fine, it is pretty to look at and simple to use. If you are a tech-head and want to do something a little more in depth then the usual user it can prove very frustrating. It tries hard to keep you at arms length from the "oily" bits. If you do end up having to dig down to actually achieve something you find yourself hacking around with install packages on a command line interface, unix style. This is fine by me in general but OS X always made me feel like it did not really want me to be doing what I was trying to do and that I should not be doing what I want to "my own" machine.

I was always told the Mac's are for "creative" types and I guess it is true. If you know more about interior decorating than you do about computers then the Apple is for you.

One day I may get the chance to try a legit copy of Win 7, I skipped Vista.

I decided to get the Upgrade to Home Premium on Thursday for no good reason whatsoever other than I did.

I left W7 installing while I went to work Friday and when I got back it was......OK!

I'm baffled. It seems to have upgraded from Vista without a hitch and fixed the .Net issue that was preventing Batman from working.

It's all gone too well. I don't like it. I don't like it at all... So far no problems and everything works. This is most unlike MS.

OK. Hands up... I'm a non-techy! I've never spent much time at the command line; Apple script via Automator is as far as it goes for me!

I am an evangelical convert. As all the most vocal evangelical converts, my conversion is recent (about a year) and I suppose I'm easily pleased. Windows just didn't do it for me any more.

Who else uses a mac here?

Well. I'm currently using the win rc 7. It's not bad at all. Its so much more stable than vista. But, with me being me, I miss having something drastic go wrong so that I get my mitts grubby.

I've considered getting my self a macbook pro. But only on the condition that I would running a windows os, either in a dual boot config or running it as a virtual machine. But this is all just an idea for the mo. It's a nice idea but I'm only really attracted to the current rage of macbook pro's because of their build quality. It's definitely far better than the plastic sony crap sitting on my lap atm.

32-bit Vista yeh, won't use anymore.

I can't really see Windows 7 doing much for you. It's just the same underlying OS after all.

Well windows 7 is running lighter, isn't it?

And battery life is far better.

Well at least that is what I'm experiencing with the RC. Although 7 is what vista should have been in the first place.

It's better yes, but is it £75-£150 better if you're already running Vista? Not imo.

Oh hell no! I know for sure I will not be upgrading from vista.

Its just a silly waste of money, tweaks will do till I have new hardware in my possession.

I'm still pretty impressed though. It is even working very cleanly on hardware that previously had xp mce on it. And that piece of machinery is edging on 6 years now. <---- This had trouble working with vista, so it just goes to show; MS have pulled their fingers out this time.

Just read 15 pages of reviews in PCPro and whilst 7 seems to be an improvement from Vista it is still 20-30% slower than XP.

Nothing has convinced me to upgrade...oh well another 3 years with XP ....lets hope Windows 9 is worthwhile.

I went from XP to 7, and I gotta say I love 7. I have a mac and a pc, and in my view, Microsoft finally did something right. Both Mac and Microsoft decided to make their latest offering less bloated, and in the case of Windows 7, the is is light, fast, and, dare I say it, stable.

I completely avoided Vista altogether because I'm a gamer and I didn't want to go through all of the problems people were having with it. However, 7 has worked like a charm with all of my games, programs, and so on. And it loads more quickly than xp.

And I have to agree with Big T UK--Macs make it very difficult to get into their guts and mess around with things.

A voice of sanity! LOL

I went from XP to 7 and rather like it although my work-a-day machine is still XP. My "beast" I built for games (which I never play, don't ask) has 7 and it would be REALLY GOOD if only they wrote decent drivers for my Creative X-Fi soundcard. I have four gig or ram in my setup and there is some bug they never fixed with Vista that has made it into 7. With four gig and my soundcard, it just makes a horrid distorted noise.

Anyway......

Well amigos,

:nerd: After hangin' with XP on my massive Dell PC, I decided to go with Windows 7 when I discovered the Pentium 4 in my Dell could not handle HiDef Video.

So I built a new computer (http://www.mysmiley.net/imgs/smile/confused/confused0018.gif (http://www.mysmiley.net/free-war-smileys.php)my first) with a Intel i5 quad-core processor and Windows 7. So far, I'm lovin' it....but I keep my Dell around just in case :dontknow:

I dont know how I got by all these years without the 'snap to side' windows feature. Since I very recently got a 1080p 22" monitor, theres a lot of screen real estate and being able to quickly position two windows side by side is a real blessing.

Also W7 looks so pretty :)

i have upgraded my computer and some friends computers from vista to windows 7 because vista is a bad OS.

I had vista on my laptop and then installed some updates and then i got the blue screen of death, same thing happend to my my friends pc. so after installing windows 7 it fixed everything and its much friendlier then vista. Vista reminds me of windows 2000 millenium edition.
