View Full Version : Standard Blade Cutter Vs Punch Cutter

Do you find either is better than the other style of cutter, or do you not mind which type of cutter is used so long as it gets the job done? :)

For me, I don't mind which cutter is used, I'd most likely get 1 of each as I would imagine that some cigars are probably better cut with a standard cutter and other are better cut with a punch cutter :)

Feel free to discuss and the poll is multiple choice :)

If possible I prefer a punch cutter, but obviously these can't be used on a torpedo or other pointed end.

My punch cutter is a spent bullet case, filed sharp. It was a gift from a great barman in Paris, from back in the day when we could still smoke indoors. Each time I use it I have many happy memories of drinking great cocktails in great company smoking great cigars.

Yea,I'd recommend it if u want a cutter for home.

A bit to big for a pocket so if u are on the move take a normal double bladed one.
So for herfs, parties etc, take a double bladed cutter.

Got it through eBay some time ago, available in silver and black.
Nice cutter, people are fascinated by it.:849:

I use this cutter for every cigar. It is self-sharpening and comes with a lifetime warranty. It also is designed to cut the perfect amount off every time. The problem is that they always seem to be out of stock where this is sold. If anyone ever finds one like this let me know.

I have the cutter in the second link and it is, by far, the best cutter I have ever used. Not only does it cut perfectly -- EVERY TIME -- but it is thoughtful enough to hold the cut cap for you until you are ready to dispose of it neatly. And, of course, lifetime guarantee... I heartily endorse and recommend it.

I know this is an old post.....

I used to swear by a twin blade Zino cutter but then misplaced it and started using a single blade freebie from CGars!! Even when I found the Zino again I stayed with the free one. Eventually, I moved to a punch cutter and haven't looked back to be honest. A single punch is fine for a smaller gauge such as a PC, 898 or even a Gorda but when I cut a cigar with 50+ I use either a shamrock or number 8 cut....the reason being some disgustingly foul 'juice' can collect round the hole if I only use a single hole :eviltongue:......subject to change as ever

I'm terrible with cutters keep loosing them or getting confiscated at the airport and they ask for a ransom to post them back. I lost me double blade cutter a few weeks back so only have a single blade cutter which can barely accommodate a churchill...so I'm back to using a trusty Wilkinson sword double edged razor blade, slices clean through.

Not keen on the punch cutter, due to the juice that collects at the end and blocks the smoke...

Out of all the cutters I have, including a Davidoff titanium, the one I use all the time is a Palio, a great cut every time.

Such a lovely thought, senor Kdot, "Juice that collects at the end [of a stogie]..." Thanks for sharing.

BTW - I have used a razor blade myself in a pinch. But are you sure you are not using a "golf tee" as a cigar punch:der:.

I use a punch most of the time and have never suffered an excess flow of juice on my NuB. (http://www.nubcigar.com/home.html) :eyebrows:

But that's just me, :bandit: TJ, TJCoro, and I always use a punch, unless I use a cutter. :smoke:

Apologies TJ, I can see you getting worked up, let me explain further...

I tend to smoke Churchills, When using a punch (I assure you, its not a golf tee, though I am known to improvise depending on my level of drunkenness) by the time I have reached the last quarter there is some thick sticky black tar like gunk that collects at the hole, sometimes it can stain your lip if you are not careful and by looking at Stevieboys post, I'm not the only one.

You may have built a layer of this gunk on your lips that you no longer notice. :849:

I like the clean cut of a punch, but something about a good blade cutter appeals to me more. I tried a Xikar the other day, and it's my top cutter so far. I'd like to try the Xikar folding scissors too.

I'd change my vote if I could.
I'm an 8-cut punch cutter convert.
Somehow it tastes better. I feel like I'm drinking my smoke.
I'll juggle with both - of course - but the punch cutter is my preference of late.
