Having just read the thread from Celsis where he's giving up cigarettes, I wondered how many BOTL are ex ciggy smokers. I can say ive never smoked and to risk inhaling cigar smoke into my lungs, surely would occur frequently if i were a cigarette smoker, also the taste of cigars would be mixed with the taste of fags [english]. Somewhat like an alcoholic being a wine connoiseur. I cant imagine a heavy smoker being able to enjoy a good Cuban. Two very different experiences , i would imagine.
I see Cigars as pleasure and relaxation, and cigarettes as habit and craving . Different ends of the scale ? Be interested to hear your experience changing from cigs to cigars.

I have never smoked a cigarette. Just cigars and some times cigarillos!
And yes... I've started with a cigar I think 8 years ago...

I smoked cigarettes for more than 20 years. Not too much, but every day.
4 years ago, i stubbed out my last cigarette. And one year later i started to smoke cigars :smoke:.
But not every day, maybe 2times a week.

Never had cigs on my own accord (e.g. never bought, found interest in em), I always like the idea of cigars, I slowly climbed the ladder to BOTL status since early 2007 and never lookd back :)

nope!! only cigars for me!!! stayed with family in new jersey an couple of years back, we would sit out in his back garden every evening watching fire flies, drinking guinness and Heineken (not together obviously, that would be disgusting) and smoking cigars!!! they were cheap nc's obviously, but the whole experience was fantastic!!! next it was cheap phillies here in belfast (£1.50 for a blunt, £2 for a titan).........then my first cohiba (a siglo 3, had to be the big fella! lol, it knocked the wind outta me)!!!
anyway, back on topic...........yes, only cigars, no cigarettes! now, when i was younger and at art college...... ahem..... lol
all the best,

I smoked as a teen but it's been 34 years since. Never felt the urge.
I can understand why my missus looks at me strangely cos I've taken to cigars.
She says I'm happily growing into an old man!

I smoked fags for many years and gave up 11 years ago. I smoked proper cigarettes for while but then Old Holborn & Gauloises & the other French one for quite a while. I think the roll-ups, whilst clearly not comparable to cigars, at least have tobacco taste and are less contaminated by chemicals than ready-mades. They did taste very nice - but it controls you - not the other way round. I would never go back because I don't want to die at 60.
I started smoking cigars properly three years ago and smoke them rarely but have many to choose from! Have to stop buying now because even I think I have enough - and I'm obsessed!!!

Tried a few when younger, never liked it. Just seems manufactured chemical filled crap.

Only ever smoked cigs at Cub camp (consulate as I remember) since then apart from a few Gauloisse (?) when on holiday and then really because I like the smell of them.
Never really had an addictive personality, enjoy a good cigar every now and then so I like a really good one.

Been a cigar smoker for about 15 years... never been a cigarette smoker, and the smell of dope turns my stomach.

I started with cigars, and was only tricked into smoking a cigarette once (when I was quite drunk). I have no interest in smoking as a habit, and as I can see no other reason to smoke cigarettes (lack of taste/chemicals/foul smell) I shall happily stick to my occassional cigar.
I used to smoke cigs as a teen and up to a few years back when I was at uni, but only when drinking...there was a slight over lap when i started smoking cigars...
However now its only cigars, mostly every other day...i think they taste better that way

Started with cigarettes as a teen (sigh).
Discovered the pleasures of mary jane in kollidge.
Switched to a pipe shortly before I got married and have never smoked another cigarette since.
Poofed my pipes for about 30 years before discovering the pleasures of a lurvely hand rolled stogie (CC and NC) 3-4 years ago.
And, yes, I inhale. Everything. The cigs, the dope, the pipe, and the stogies.
I know, I know: Cardinal Sin No. 1 of Cigar Smoking.
But the way I look at it is that you wouldn't go to your favo(u)rite steak house and order a perfect filet or prime rib only to cut off a piece, chew it, savo(u)r the magnificent flavo(u)rs, and then spit it out, would you?
Similarly, I could never understand the effete snobs who taste wine by swirling it around, sticking their nose in the glass, taking a sip and sloshing it back and forth from cheek to cheek like they were rinsing with mouthwash, then SPITTING OUT PERFECTLY GOOD WINE! Okay, okay, much of what we taste is in the nose; however, it's called tasting for ghodz sakes. That means ingesting. Down the gullet. Into the breadbasket.
Now I'm not espousing the cause of inhaling your stogie. If you haven't been conditioning your pulmonary system for almost 50 years, as I have, then sucking stogie smoke down your gullet is very likely to kill you to death, wish it had killed you to death, or at least make you quite dizzy and weak-kneed. However, on the other hand, 'tisn't fair to condemn me because I do. The simple fact is that if I don't inhale my 'gar, the only flavo(u)r I can distinguish is burning leaves! S'truth!

Never smoked a cigarette and never will. Started cigars on holiday in cuba coming up for 2 years ago. I only smoke as a form of relaxation hence the infrequency of my postings in the what are smoking today threads.

There was something on Radio 4 the other day about the new stringency of the anti-smoking laws in Holland. In a dope cafe, a customer was busted by an off-duty Policeman when he put some shreds of tobacco into his cannabis balloon. If he had not added the tobacco, he would not have been busted.

I smoked cigarettes from 15 to 27 years old. I was up to 30 a day by the end. I quit for a year when I was 23, but I made the decision to start again for a reason that eludes me now but was important then! I haven't had a fag for nearly a year now and I feel better for it.
I'm really enjoying Cigars, though I'm trying to keep them as occasional as possible. Cold weather helps. Working on building sites doesn't. I reckon it must have been hard for you guys who never smoked cigs to get used to the smell of the Big Stick, no? Most of my friends who smoke the odd cigar are either current or ex smokers. The few who have never smoked wouldn't touch a Puro at the point of a gun.
As it's the Holidays, I'm going to have my third of the day, a Party D4!
Self restraint is over-rated!

interesting post this guys ive done my newbie meet and greet so forgive me if im jumping in at the deep end.
in all honestly ive never smoked cigarettes but have however smoked habanos for prob 10 years, just as a general consensus because up in my neck of the woods friends and family seem to see me a a bit of a minority being a cigar fanatic and always say the same thing to me when they discover my cigar passion which is 'how did you come to smoke cigars and never cigarettes' my response is usually along the lines of cigars and cigarettes are just a totally different ball game smoking cigars just cannot be compared to smoking cigarettes, which generally provokes uproar in myself being labelled hypocritical for slating cigarette smokers. i suppose my conclusion being is am i wrong to slate cigarette smokers when i myself am a smoker albeit cuban cigars....

I reckon it must have been hard for you guys who never smoked cigs to get used to the smell of the Big Stick, no?Not really. Or at least not in my case. I have never liked the smell of cigarettes, however, have always loved the aroma of a cigar. My first cigar 'experiece' was at a rugby match; a couple of old Welsh guys behind us had them on the go for the whole three hours we were stood in the Shed at Kingsholm. I must have been about nine years old and, despite choking for about the next fortnight, I thoroughly enjoyed the beautiful smell (what a change from the bland, stale smell of a cigarette).
Never smoked cigarettes although my wife does. I don't like the smell or the addictive habit. Cigars are very different they smell and taste wonderful and you choose when you want to enjoy one. Only started cigar smoking last summer whilst on holiday and am loving the smoking, the collecting/hoarding nature of building a collection and learning all aspects of cigars do's and don't from you guys. Thanks Andy

I havn't smoked a cigarette to some twenty odd years. But was pretty bad before that. Smoked Hamlets and such (with the odd Habanos from time to time) till about half-way through last year. Still smoke Cohiba mini's, but more as a time and cold thing rather than for any preference reasons.

I started smoking cigarettes when I was about 13 and smoked about 20 a day. I slowed down slightly after going on the rollies and then a month or two into discovering cigars (about a year ago) I just stopped bothering to smoke fags completely. Very occasionally I'll have one, and I went straight back to 20 a day when I went on holiday for a week, but then stopped again when I came back. I do find the smoke of ready-made cigarettes unpleasant now.

I started with cigarillos (the Che ones, to impress the loose leftie female-students in college ), he occasional wacky baccy thrown in for good mesure and started smokeing a few cigarettes during my PhD times, but never got the bug (3-4 per day most).
After that I tried cigars and the pipe. I liked both, but the pipe is a bit too fussy for me, so stuck with cigars from 7 years back though I have to admit I only smoked 1-2 a month... untill I found this forum. Now I smoke at least 3-4 a week and my credi card needs to be shredded.... may you be damned!!:mad2::love::p

It depends. Cigar smoking can be an habit too - but if you only smoke a few a week or month - then it's a pleasure. I've never smoked a cigarette in my life - and so far only tried mini cigars which are just disgusting if you ask me. I still need a try a decent cigar to see if it's for me - but I would only smoke a few a month or so anway (maybe not even that!).
You have to remember, cigars still contain some of the toxic agents like ammonia, carbon monoxide ect. (also contains nicotin, too) - just that cigarettes have added chemicals.
So the question is: Is Cigar smoking an hobby an habit or an addiction for you?
Addiction – Mental and/or physical dependency beyond a person's control.
Habit – Recurrent pattern of behavior ingrained as the result of frequent repetition.
Hobby – Activity or pastime done for pleasure.

I quit cigarettes, though I loved them quite a bit. Then I took up cigars after a cuban epiphany down in Merida.
The other day I had a cigarette in my favorite setting--at a bar, with friends, and well into a nice buzz. It was horrible--I felt like I was sucking on a toothpick sized muffler. It was clear that I'd made the full transition.
I now no longer look longingly upon a pack of cigarettes. Other people's cigar stashes, now that's another story...

Only ever cigars for me. Never had the desire to smoke cigarettes - the smell of the smoke just doesn't do it for me. Cigars however are a whole other matter. I just need to catch a whiff of someone else enjoying a good cigar and thats me off to join in.:smoke:
And in answer to Jason, it's def a hobby for me, and a very pleasurable one at that.

Ive never smoked cigerettes, only ever smoked cigars on and off since maybe the mid 80s but more so now (daily) for the last several years.. However that said, ive recently started to use a pipe, what i do is when i get to the end of my cigar, i snip off the 'cooked' end and then with the butt i flake it up and smoke it in my pipe... no waste...

Not at all, i use a filter and its no different to smoking cigars.. in my opinion anyway as with a pipe you dont inhale into the lungs.

I smoke mainly mini's. The guy's on here I really admire are those who can reel-in their cigar smoking to maybe one a week or less. That is what I call smoking for the sheer pleasure of it and in a very gentlemanly way.
My hat goes off to them. Wish I could do it.

I have a mate who smokes 20+ minis a day but I have never been able to get on with them and prefer to smoke just one, large cigar each day...except on holidays when it goes up to 5 or 6 per day:41:

Tried cigarettes in my youth, but never liked them, used to nick a few of my Dad's hand rolled ciggies, but he never put in filter and they made me feel like crap.
Got on to cigars via King Teddies, that my Uncle used to bring back from his ship (ex. RN) Dad never smoked them, so I would "liberate" a stick now and then. :41:
Just smoke good cigars now. :849:

I'm aiming to only smoke cigars. Just quit cigarettes and the thought of relaxing with a good cigar and a tumbler or spirits at the end of the week is all thats keeping me from buying a packet of cigarettes.
Horrible habit (fags), never start!

I gave up cigarettes 4 years ago. I never inhale cigars, but I have been smoking them during all my adult life so I'm used to the different smoking technique. Since quitting cigarettes I started to smoke at least 1 cigar/day. Cigars, even though I only puff them, surely have kept my nicotine addiciton alive. Oh well.
Honestly I think most people underrate the addictive nature of cigar smoking. In spite of all that connoisseurship, it still is a tobacco product. And that's one of the two main reasons I like it btw, the other one being the taste... (in cigarettes, you have only the drug effect)
