I am not a professional cigar smoker.

And I don't play one on TV (that would be "Telly" for some of you).

However, FWIW, I make the following observation.

Sometimes it aint' the see-gar; it's your mouth.

I see some of you out there appear puzzled. I shall explain.

There are times when your favo(u)rite smoke just seems "off." You wonder if it's the temperature, the humidity, or if the dog just farted. Any road, no matter what you do, it just doesn't taste right. Other times, no matter what dogrocket you pull from your humi, it tastes like you've just had smokeable manna from heaven.

Why is that?

Welp, I conjecture that it's a function of your mouth.

Now, I don't purport to know where any of you chaps have had your mouth lately, what you've been putting into it, or how you ordinarily perform routine maintenance on it; however, I know my mouth has been in a relatively constant state for the past ago or so, yet -- for some strange reason -- every stogie I've stuck into it for the past week-ish has tasted absolutely wonderful!

Mind you, I'm not complaining (if only it were like this all the time!), just wondering. What is it that makes the cigar-smoking experience so blissful some times and less than pleasant other times? Yes, yes, I hear you... the state of the stogie is a factor. But when you minimize the variables, puffing on a favo(u)rite of known quality and characteristic, you can still experience this strange phenomenon.

So, you more biological BOTL's out there: Wuzup? Wha'z going on here?

I'm open to suggestions...

I know wit u mean mucker, sometimes my mouth tastes sweet for no reason, dont know why, definately not diatbeties or nothing but every stogie I have during that sweet time tastes like heaven all the way through...

i agree completely

sometimes even intense palate cleansing isnt enough. sometimes the mouth is off. sometimes cigars that you know are great, taste bitter.

i wonder if hydration has any factor in it. ive been drinking a lot over christmas, and i always have an unpleasant taste in my mouth in the morning that can linger.
but the strange thing is, sometimes when i feel like im not at my tasting best, a cigar suddenly tastes heavenly.
there aint no damn rhyme or reason to it!

Maybe mouths are a bit like golf swings Rok .... sometimes in the groove other times in the bunker.

Or, might just be humidity, Florida isn't exactly famous for it's deserts!

I would have to say Yes. I find after a long weekend my stogies begin to taste like S-HT. I find the most enjoyable time to burn one is after a day of hard work weather mental or physical.

i agree entirely there

you have to earn a cigar

although sometimes the ones that you dont plan or work for. a sneeky cigar that you somehow find the time for, they are very often special

Couldn't it be related to the length of break you leave between the treats just as for the sex?

I smoke five or more a day and have found,if you cleanse the palate between cigars they are more likely to be enjoyable.
Be it water, mouthwash or a bite to eat.

I rarely have a "go to" cigar taste off.Unless of course the box is going into a sick period. That's rare because I prefer fresh over aged cigars and tend to smoke through them :smoke:

Seriously Rokkit, I remember reading some of those weird facts which was actually in an article relating to jet lag and your body clock.

One of the things which was mentioned was that your response to taste was most receptive at around 10 am in the morning.

Now this could be complete bollocks, but i know that some of my best smokes are in the morning, and to be honest this is my personal favourite time for indulging in a smoke.

I know everyone tastes small differences in the same cigars we all smoke, and that is what makes cigars so interesting for me.
I have smoked the same cigar from the same box, both in the morning and the evening. For me the morning smoke will be the winner 9 times out of 10.

Hope this helps you out mate.

The great thing after a hard day is that once I light up a big ole' stogie
the world and everyone in it go away till i'm done. Nothing worse then wifie calling down to the man cave a telling me theres a phone call.
Can't people just F things up when were in our own zone? LOL

The 10 AM thing is actually a recognised phenomenon that professional tasters take quite seriously.

Quite a while back, unsure of what to do with my accademic qualification, I trained for about three years as a wine taster in persuit of a different career. Part of the training involved understanding how your taste is affected by your body's perception.

Excluding illnesses tht affect your taste (colds and the like), the things that are commonly considered as factors that alter your taste are:

- how clean your mouth is from strong flavours, i.e. stuff like mints, spicy foods, anise, acids that affect how you taste.

- how much food you have eaten and how long ago. If you are full, you taste less, while if you are very hungry any strong taste will be overpowering. The ideal is to feel slightly hungry but have something in your belly.

- how rested you are. When rested you can detect flavours a lot better.

10 AM is seen as the ideal time because you have had a light mildly flavoured meal (unless you go for as nice fry up ) about 2 hours or so back, you're still rested after a night sleep .

I think that it is a bit more complex with cigars as some on the full bodied end of the spectrum need something a bit more solid than breakfast.. at least for some of us.
