View Full Version : Pros and Perils of using turbo flames

My smoking habits have been reduced as of late, as the cold is not making it very fun (as I smoke outside in the garage or workshop, and I swear the cold makes a cigar smoke much differently).
Fancied a corona today as I didn't want to freeze too much. I tried lighting with my normal clippers and the flames were stupid and small so I just thought f*** this im getting my big ol Turbo flame lighter that I got from millets (Eurohike) and blazed the hell out of this poor corona.
I seldom (well never basically) use the turbo flame as Im scared to torch the wrappers of my cigars. But it worked pretty well with the corona, a few seconds of rotating the cigar over the flame quickly, and holding the cigar vertically over the flame allowed the foot to be fully lit all over. I blew on the end to ensure it was lit, and it remained lit til the end of the smoke.
I don't normally rush my lighting technique, but this did it in about 30 seconds. I read in min ron nee's book that a white grey ash pretty much means the cigar is combusting perfectly; well the ash was brilliant white and I had no burn issues at all, asside from slow burning ligeros after the first tier of ash, I had no problems, if anything it was getting better as it went down as the coning was reducing after each tier of ash broke.
Do many of you fellas stay true to turbo flame systems, or do you stick with more traditional flame lighters?

Lately I've been using long matches...purely for fun
The rest of the time I use a Prometheus jet....don't the flame touch the foot too much though or you can get horrible black scorching :cowboyic9:

Most of the time lightly toast the end with a 3 flame torch lighter then use a long match, if I have time for fun then I use the 3 match method for a change.

has to be jet lighters or matches for me as the metal on most normal lighters burn my fingers to bits
i dont find any difference in quality of burn with jet lighters/matches.
if anything i prefer the jets as soft flames have a mind of their own and more often singe wrappers for me

For outside Coghlans waterproof matches .... hiking, surplus, fishing shops .... those sort of places.
I gently toast with a single jet lighter with the tip of the flame about 2 inches from the foot of the cigar. I read somewhere that this minimises any toxin buildup. Andy

Yes they can light up gars an ciggies on an open deck in squalls on the North Sea. And, you can get even more heavy duty version matches, issued to Troops an' guaranteed not to go out. The match head looks like a 'Sparkler', not sure if I'd want to risk the ignition chemicals from one of thoes near a good cigar though.
You can get different types through Amazon.

I either use one of several single torch lighters or a creme brulee torch. Get the foot of the cigar good and hot with the tip of the flame then turn the flame perpendicular to the cigar and just get it close to puff up a nice cherry on the end. Works every time! :cowboyic9:

I use a Turboflame torch. Much easier to control than anything else I reckon.

I only use a soft flame when I have no choice.

Like many fellow BOTL's, I tend to go for a torch lighter when firing up.
However, if the mood takes me I'll occasionally fall back on a burning cocktail to do the deed, usually a 'Flaming Homer' (otherwise known as a 'Flaming Mo'), the addition of cough syrup to the mix reduces any possible hacking should the 'stoogie' prove a little troublesome to the throat, and the accompanying beverage pairs nicely with a good Cuban.

Xtend single flame torch/jet lighter over here.
Over recent months I've got into the habit of gently toasting my cigars up to full glow (with an occassional light blow to the foot), blowing through after this and off we go. A flamed equivalent of the three match method?
EDIT:
Pros for me are an efficient and accurate flame. Perils would include get your aim wrong and you're doing damage quickly.

My preferred method is a soft flame. I only use a torch when I have to, mostly because of wind.

Soft flames and torches and matches and rubbing two twits together and who knows what.
Here in the US of byghodz A, we don't fuck around. See-gar smoking is a MANLY endeavo(u)r which requires you use a MANLY light.

I will use my dual flame jet lighter allllllll the time. I always have it on me, it ALWAYS lights, and it has 3 differrent punch sizes on the back of it.
Bought in April 07. Best 30 bucks I have spent.
Cons - I have found its getting harder to get butane here to suit this lighter style, with the small nozzel. Might have to get a case of the stuff.

I've been using this for my last 2 cigars and it's gone down pretty well.
On a budget NC stick, I literally just blasted the foot of the cigar, it didn't light that well, I think the foot was a bit singed, and the middle didnt get hit much, didnt smoke that well, but was lit as ash fell.
The next was an oliva. I did the same, held the cigar vertical and just held the cigar above the flame and let the glow....grow and grow, and then I just moved the cigar with my hand in a circular motion so it all got it. Instantly and amazingly lit! Think I will use this all the time now, nice and easy!
Was a bit scared before because I thought it could be too powerful, but i'm taming the beast rapidly!

I always use matches or cedar sticks. Always smoke indoors so there is no issue with the matches going out.

Have totally converted now. I know when it starts embering gently I know i've gotten the right height, I then lower it down and blast it in for the kill. A perfectly lit cee gar.
Only thing that bothers me with my millets one that sometimes it just konks out and refuses to light. Rotating the +/- wheel gets it going again. I feel as if I have to keep a can of butane close by just incase :o

Use a triple flame torch that came from The U.S. via e-bay. Works well. Have a very fancy Colibri with the smoothest motion imaginable, but only one jet so given the weather, I stick to old 3 flame!
