View Full Version : How much are you prepared to pay for a cigar?
Robusto

I've touched on this on the site recently, and I'm intrigued.
The most I've paid for a single smoke is, if I remember this correctly, £30 in JJ Fox for a Monte Sublime on the first Cigar Walk last March.
I might have paid more for my P1 in Teddington because the prices aren't made explicit there (:biggrin1:). I toked and enjoyed it.
I consider paying £30 a hefty outlay for a single cigar.
I am not the kind of cigar chap who is hunting out a rarity. I am not a completist collector. I spend a small amount of readies on cigars because - much as I love the habit - I try to keep my global budget in order. If I were rich, no doubt I'd splash out more, especially as I am practically tee-total and don't splash out on any other luxuries.
For me, there comes a time when coughing up big time becomes ridiculous, and part of that is because these things are ridiculously taxed.
So what do you folk think?
Are you prepared to buy your sublime cigar at any cost?

It's a lot of dough to lay out, but then again I shudder to think what my wife spends on a day of 'pampering', and isn't that what enjoying a good cigar is?
I think I spent £55 on a cigar in a west London restaurant last summer- I can't say it was a waste of money even at that price!
very hard to justify - even harder to say no to.:p
Although The Lainsborough are selling a single Behike for £1.5K and I draw the line some way short of that...

received The Frown of Death, so, obviously I know my limit.

The most expensive cigar I have paid for was a RyJ No.3 of 6 euro (about 5 quids)... :cowboyic9:
I've paid around £40 for a single monte A in a coffin a few times but would never go near that figure that for a regular smoke.

I think the most I've paid was about 20 quid. Highly unlikely to pay more than that, even if I could afford it. I just don't think it's value for money beyond that point, considering how much I enjoy a 'standard' cigar like a RASS or a JL2.

The most i have paid was 20€ for a custom made "Padrino" from Cuba. Now, since 5 months they are aging in a tupperware-box.
Don´t know when i will try the first one:frown:.

mine was the R & J 04 Hermosa at £24 each. I liked it so much more that the monte sublime i smoked yesterday. I think £20-30 for a single stick is more than enoughbut then I'm a tight arsed QS by trade.

Mine would be the 3 Cohiba Sublime Extras that I bought for £45 each.....
The only time I've "invested" in cigars, a lot of dough but, considering they go for nearly double that (if you can find them), I reckon I got a bargain!

If I had to pay more then a buck and a half a box then its time for me to give it up. I am a simple guy with a simple life who has simple needs. I do however understand with all the taxes imposed on my fellow BOTL that U would probably have to pay a lot more, Chatting with a friend an Opus X belicoso in his country cost around $100.00 for 1 smoke!:der: When is enough ,enough ! Whilst out on the London HERFs I have let myself spand aroun £30 for a cigar in the shops that allow you to smoke in them...
Small change IMHO as even tho I would not pay so much for a cigar the company and the day makes it all worth the price...:cowboyic9:

i have not spent a crazy amount on a single cigar (as yet :p) but i used to spend around £50.00 on cigs a week so as i only smoke 1-2 cigars a week so for a special ocassion i would treat my self

As a rule I use the online sites for all my purchases, i simply cannot ignore the cheaper prices. It makes buying them over here very difficult to justify.
Just before the Christmas herf i went to JJ Fox and bought a RASS, Genios, and Duke. That small selection cost me nearly £80! The Genios was the most expensive at around £27 (i think). This is the most i've paid for a single.
I guess it all comes down to the situation. If i had the chance to sample something special, and it was at a herf or something like that, then perhaps i'd pay a little more and just enjoy it. To smoke at home i probably wouldnt bother.

Like MB says it's down to the situation there are times when when you are in Tesco's quibbling about £7 for a bottle of wine and you are in a restaurant with friends and pay £30 for the same and if you were with business colleagues you'd pay £50. Though £30 is enough for a stogie ! :cowboyic9:

£28 for one at Ajay's Teddington Casa. Can't even remember what it was now, was ok nothing amazing. I'll spend £25 on a Sublime or a bit less for a Duke at JJ's, but prefer not to spend too much per cigar tbh.

I spent £IR38 in U2s hotel in Dublin for a Cohiba Robusto. It was the year 2000 and there was no smoking ban and I had just started smoking Cubans. God knows how much they charge for them now!

im a fool with money. i have a tendancy to blow it when i need it the most.
i spend 30 on fox's aged lusitanias and hoyo DCs. havent spent that much more than 30 on a single.
but, i dont think its too crazy spending 50-100 on a cigar. sure, logically you know you're almost spending enough to buy a box worth. but the countless times ive spent 50-100 on a night out getting smoooshed and not really enjoyed it... if special cigars come my way and i feel like i wanna burn some cash then yes. a very special hoyo or partagas... id be there

Over the years (and thanks to some rather reckless shenanigans), I've had the odd 'close call' or two, leaving me with an 'eat, drink and be merry' kind of attitude to life.
So, when I've had it, I've spent it, and bloody well enjoyed it. Even so, I find myself 'drawing a line' at the price that some of the upper end cigars go for. I might be tempted for a Cohiba Gran reserva (or two), but beyond that ...unlikely.
It's an odd rationale though, because looking back, I've spent daft amounts of money on a bottle of wine, eaten in some eye-wateringly expensive restaurants, and willingly forked out to stay in some of the worlds more (in)famous hotels.
I guess it's easier to justify the cost when it's something you're sharing with someone else, whereas cigars are a purely self-indulgent pleasure, maybe that's why I keep hearing a voice in my head (the working class Yorkshire man in me) who keeps shouting ''How much? Don't be so bloody ridiculous soft lad!". Perhaps I shold start listening to it more.
Hmmn, note to self, not sure I should be admitting to hearing voices in my head people might start to think I'm unhinged, wibble, wibble.
Whaddaya mean 'start' to think?

Generally I don't spend much more than $10 USD for a cigar, but I have spent quite a bit more, well into the over $100 range. Once in a while for truly special occasions a truly special smoke is nice, and I think about like I think about any entertainment, how much can I afford to spend on this event and what am I sacrificing in order to pay for this?

£100 for 10 Dukes is my highest so far, but C4 is clearly a very wise man. I too would spend much more if the stars were aligned and I was having a good time smoking it. It's a shame that if you live outside London it is hard to fid somewhere congenial to smoke - so I guess it is a special occasion when I do.

No shame in admitting the voices, mate. Many of the blokes here should be hearing them, just haven't come out yet.
It's just me.
Over to NASA HQ, we gots us this Sooper-Sekrit Brain Communicator and combination pedicure kit which allows us to talk directly into anyone's head. I have access to the SSBCCPK on alternate Tuesdays between 3:17 a.m. and 3:24 a.m., Central Turkmenistani Time.
You know those thoughts you've been having about how nice it would be to send some el primo vitolas to that devilishly handsome rokkit scientist across the waters? Yup. Me.
So no worries, mate. No unhinged wibble, wibble. Just do what the voice in your head tells you and all will be well.

I paid $118aud (whats that, about 60 quid?? ) for an Opus A. It was for celebrating my divorce, so I didnt care what the price was. Brilliant cigar! Fell in love with it.
I have paid $46aud for a Party SdN4, and hated it. I cursed the day it was born. So I bought another. And the same reaction applied.
On a regular smoke, I am prepaired to spend up to $140 a box. CC or NC, th price doesnt change. That does not include this countrys tax on tobacco, but usually includes shipping.

By some margin the most I paid was for a box of Partagas Piramide LE from 2000. I got them from JJ's for £335....not a horrific price but WAY more than my usual £6-7/stick :41:

Very nice purchase Stevieboy...
When was that? If you don't mind me asking...!?!
If it makes you feel better (which it will) I paid £32 for a single of these from La Casa back in October...
It was amazing by the way... :41:

It was about 9 months ago IIRC....Pedrohan said he'd found some at JJFox's so I got in on the act....amazing smoke. A lot of older smokers say they taste the way older CCs used to taste and that newer stuff isn't as good!?!?!

I spent $60 for an Opus X BBMF. Thats the most for me. Still have not smoked it yet. To be honest I am a little afraid. I have smoked some bigger Opus and had to lay down. Someday when I grow up I will light it up.

I doubt I'd pay more than £50 for a smoke.
A 'regular' smoke for me is around £5-20. Anything beyond that is a bit 'special'.

that was a good price for the partagas 2000s there. ive seen a box going for £500 at whisky-cigar that im tempted by.
JJs had another box in a few months ago, but they were open for singles. have to be so quick and be in the right place, right time to get them fine apples!

If it's a collector's cigar, box, item, I would pay what I would figure by experience is worth.
Regular smokes. I made the mistake to buy 3 sticks of the coh siglioVI reserva. Some 80 euros a piece. Not worth it. In fact they are as good as the "ordinary" siglioVI and I think they are not worth a penny more. IMHO. Having said that the 2 remaining reservas are sleeping and will continue to sleep forever. Until they become a collector's cigar.

Most I've paid for a single stick is £20 for a Siglo VI in duty free....most I would pay would probably be £30. Unless of course I encountered the perfect storm of finding myself unexpectedly out without so much as a cheroot in my pocket, on an unexpectedly warm evening at an unexpectedly stupendous restaurant that had an unexpectedly fine selection of smokes....then I shudder to think what I'd be capable of. :wof:
How much do you think this guy paid for his latest purchase of cigars?
