Hi all

A little bird tells me that there will be some Cigar based events at a newly opened venue in Marylebone in early 2010.

Details are somewhat sketchy at present but put these dates in your diary and as soon as I have more information I will get back to you.

Dates so far:

Jan 18th
Feb 8th
March 15th

Dates are there and confirmed, just not sure how to book.

I will look like my avatar if Boots have plenty of hair colour and if I can get enough botox.

I'm good for any of them

My experience says the first will be the best, very little lead time (as with the Boisdale event) so more Champers all round.

Damn, the secret is out. Jimmeh and I smoked in the new year at this place and we loved it. We got kicked out of the Lanesborough when they had a flood, apparently first time it has had to be closed!

The Landesborough is warm if you are near the fire, even the heated roof thing could not cope on the 31st. No. 10 is TOASTY warm and we had the place to ourselves. The staff are super friendly. A passable selection of smokes, but not staggering.

Jimmeh and I could not decide if to tell everybody, we decided we would so they got lots of business but we have not got around to it yet, LOL.

Sounds coolio, i'm up for some events! I havent been... well.. hardly anywhere really and given that I work right near the Lanesborough I should def check it out. I read an article on the H&F site about the Behikes they are selling.. it shows a rather comfy looking picture of the garden room..

Anyhoo please let me know more details about the other place as and when - looks awesome! :biggrin1:

Monk,
I should be in town but not sure of my movements yet. I am doing a run round the cigar stores with a schedule for the Cigar walk for this year. Please PM me your mobile and let's tie up. I know that Drew is heading for Wardour st in the PM, not sure I will make that unfortunately.

Unfortunately i work a good 30 minute walk from casa - so if i leave work at 1730 and walk to casa- i will have to turn around and go straight back! FORTUNATELY- i work a mere 10 minute walk from 10 manchester street. I may end up there slightly early for a pre smoke smoke!

Ok. Big T and I are planning the following:

Selfridges - 1.30-2.00pm
JJF - 3.00-3.30pm
10MS - 5-5.30pm

Let us know if you want to join us for some/all of our little trek.

God the fizz last night must not have agreed with me. I did not drink much but what a tummy I got on the way home....LOL..

ANYWAY, great night. I am miffed I did not get to talk to Simon Chase, he got caught up with some other people, not in our group.

Sorry I did not get to talk to everybody, I wanted to speak to all our bunch but as usual I did not get the chance.

GREAT night though. Nic was his usual fine self but ducked out early-ish, bloody family men, LOL.

Deano was his usual great grumpy (looking) self. He left a bunch of his stuff behind that is now in my careful keeping. Hmmm, I can blackmail him to be social to retrieve it, HAHA.

Met Monkey66 for the first time, GREAT chap. Saw a good sprinkle of the ones I usually see, you know who you are.

Good evening in general chaps, good cigar, and Deano convincing us to smoke more is ALWAYS good.

Here is my account of the evening:

Upon arrival I bestowed my bags with the front reception and made my way in to the restaurant area where i met some of the others from the forum (Deano, big_bear, Jimmeh) who were already chatting with Simon Chase from H&F.

While we waited for the terrace to be set up I ordered a wheat beer. I dont remember ever having one of these before but is was rather nice. It wasnt long before the terrace was available and we all went outside.

The terrace was long and fairly narrow, kind of like a galley, with a decked floor and seating at either side. There were four or five large heaters suspended from the ceiling and I was struck by just how warm it was. It felt very comfortable. I could have sat there in shorts and t-shirt and still have been warm! Certainly a contrast to the freezing cold night at Boisdale before Christmas.

We all took our seats and were handed a glass of Champagne followed by a R&J Duke. Simon Chase of H&F (or formally of H&F) started by giving some background information on the R&J brand and the creation of Edicion Limitada cigars. Simon explained that all EL’s should have a Maduro wrapper. However in this case the Dukes exhibited a wrapper closer to that of Colorado. The box i have at home are the same. Simon went on to explain that this is known to occur with some tobacco leaves deeper within the bales, despite them all originating from the top of the tobacco plant. Apparently they should still retain the sugar and oils despite the colour difference.

There was certainly more information and anecdotes but my brain simply didnt retain it. Apologies. However i was fortunate enough to have a brief chat with Simon a little later; we were discussing the potential impact on the CC market in the event the US embargo is lifted. I wondered if Cuba had the capacity to produce the estimated 40M extra cigars (from memory) that may be required to meet demand.

Apparently the Cubans are making certain plans for this eventuality but Simon explained that it wouldn't simply be a case of opening the flood gates and there being Cuban cigars readily available on shelves. US companies own the rights to many of the Cuban brand names in the US (Cohiba, R&J, Bolivar to name a few) and therefore there would likely be some sort of challenge which would inevitably slow or prevent the Cuban cigars of those brands from being sold in the US. I take that as good news. Who knows what might happen if demand rockets and there is a shortage in supply?! Probably hit us in the wallet.

I sat there a while enjoying the atmosphere and conversation. The Duke was excellent. I have enjoyed all of the two Dukes I have smoked. Surely this stick will be in demand in a few years. I think i may purchase another box to lay down and enjoy in a year or so.

After I had finished the Duke I had a peek in the hotel humidor. Not a vast selection but some nice smokes. I purchased a Trinidad Robusto T. Never had it before and thought about lighting it up but by that time, still only early mind you, I got hungry and decided to head off home. Probably should have stayed but hey ho.

I really loved the venue and I felt the staff were very attentive. I would certainly recommend it for anyone in London, especially in the cold weather. Being located right near Oxford Street its ideal if you get dragged in to London shopping by a significant other. I’ll certainly be going back. The terrace is open from 11am-11pm 7 days. You can smoke your own if you want to or purchase from their humidor.

Anyway lastly I enjoyed meeting up with everyone, and especially meeting Monkey66 and Nicwing who i hadnt met before. Look forward to meeting up again at some other future event. Maybe this Friday at JJ’s?! Anyway thats enough rambling from me... Cheers MB.
