...the place where my wife's cousin lives.

Sister in law is travelling to the Big A in a few weeks, so what recommendations can you make folks?

Any input is gratefully received. I'm guessing to grab a selection of things as opposed to a box or two...unless convinced that's the way to go:wink:

I'm not in the market for anything particularly xxxy in the $ department as funds just aren't there, but some decent smokes will be the way to go:smile:

If you are looking for a selection of 5ers I would go to JR Cigar on 5th Ave. Might be called Midtown Cigar now??? But they seem to have all the same deals as JR currently has. Basically it's buy 3 cigars get 2 free of select cigars of their 5 packs. Usually a pretty good selection over the two floors. The stock differs a little from online to the shop but prices are with in a dollar or two. It will be your best bet when sending in someone who is not a smoker too. Just warn her the entire shop is a humidor (read: frizzy hair!) My wife was not a big fan of that! :p

Go to the website (http://www.jrcigars.com/)and look at the 5ers they have and make a list. Put a few extras on the list as they might not have everything you want in stock. Best deals in NYC IMHO.

J-R's on 45-th & 5-th Ave is a sure bet, best place for singles and best deals for boxes and accesoires.

For anything more "refined" I'd try Davidoff's, Nat Sherman, and/or De La Concha on 7-th Ave., latter being my favourite as it is small, intimate, well run, they have an excellent selection and ... 4 tables & 8 chairs to sit down, enjoy a cigar, good coffee and be stared at through the large windows like a vanishing species by the locals :- ))

De La Concha : 1390 Ave of the Americas (btw 56 & 57 St )

Without knowing what your personal tastes are and assuming you won't have your SIL run around town trying to fill a long list I will suggest these from JR:

CAO L’Anniversaire Cameroon
Hoyo de Monterrey Excalibur 1066 Dark Knight
H. Upmann Vintage Cameroon
Hoyo de Monterrey Dark Sumatra
La Aurora 1495
La Gloria Cubana natural
Onyx Reserve
Partagas Black
Partagas Spanish Rosado
Punch Gran Puro
Romeo y Julieta 1875

Note, JR carries brands by General Cigar so you won't get Pepins, Rocky Patels, Olivas, 5 Vegas, etc...that considered, this is what they do have that I personally find to be good smokes. Also this is what is listed as being available in 5ers otherwise I would have listed Fuente Hemingway, Montecristo Platinum, Torano 1959, Fonseca, Camacho, etc... Might be worth putting them on the list in case they do have them for offer in a 5er when she gets there.

What kind of cigars do you prefer? Medium, mild, full? Any flavors you dislike? Sweet, spicy, woody, earthy? Might be able to tidy up the list a bit and get you set up with an pretty good sample across the board.

Mike, you is weird man (cue Twilight Zone music):p

Out of the whole JR site (not that I was able to look over it all) I fell on the Beli's little bro'. Remins me of the Hemmingway Short Story style.

How bizarre:der::biggrin1:
Reason being I thought the smaller vitola was so I could actually get to smoke some of the buggers (length of time to smoke) during our winter.
Sounds like you rate these then Mike?

cj121, I was in NY the week before xmas and visited a few cigar stores, so I might be able to help.

It's a pitty your not going yourself, but hopefully I can point you/your sister in law in the right direction.

When their I visited Barclay Rex, The Cigar Inn, Davidoff in Columbus Circle and De la Concha.

As already said JR cigars is great for deals on the lesser NC brands as well as for accessories.

But out of all the stores I got to visit, if your SIL is only going to be able visit one for you, get her to go to Barclay Rex on Lexington Avenue. I was staying in the Radisson on Lexington Avenue and Barclay Rex was only 2 blocks up the street, it was GREAT. Think it's address is Lexington and 47th Street or 48th Street.

Anyway the store is great and it has a super selection of all the best NC, including,

Padron 1926 / 1964 / 45 Years / 80 Years
Rocky Patel (including the Decade / 1990 / 1992 etc)
Pete Johnsons brands (including Tatuaje / La Riqueza / El Trin. as well as the hard to get Black labels, Johnsons own personel brand etc)
Don Pepin Garcia's brands (including My Father / Cuban Classic / White and Blue labels)
Padilla
La Aurora
Ashton (including the VSG)
Etc
Etc

The store also has a great selection accessories. I got a super wee Xikar jet flame cigar lighter for $35 along with a load of cigars (box of La Riqueza and a handful of My Father and Tatuaje Black Labels), will have to put up some pics.

Anyway, just my 2 cents worth, but definately my pick (along with De la Concha if your ever visiting) of the cigar stores in Manhattan.

Remember to post some pictures of whatever your SIL brings you back :biggrin1:
