Surprised none of my fellow Scots have posted this.

"New laws to end the open display of tobacco in shops in Scotland have been passed by MSPs.
The Tobacco and Primary Medical Services Bill will also ban cigarette vending machines and introduce a registration scheme for retailers.
Ministers said the legislation would make cigarettes less attractive to children and young people.
But shopkeepers and manufacturers said the measures were unjustified and would be costly to bring in.
Large retailers have until 2011 to implement the ban, while smaller shops have been given a 2013 deadline."

A trip into Edinburgh city centre isn't complete without a wee browse in one of the specialist cigar shops, but as of 2013 that'll be a thing of the past.:eviltongue:

Watch out the rest of the UK, I'm sure you'll follow suit in the not too distant future.:frown:

I assume this wouldn't apply to tobacconists. No more browsing in the walk-in humidor? Regardless, it's ridiculous.

"Good afternoon, sir. I'd like three Partagas 8-9-8, please"
"Very well. I'll be right back. Please turn around so you don't catch a glimpse of anything as I open the cabinet."

total bullshit!!!!

We are living in an insane world with a real lack of leadership in our nations. We have far more important things that our governments should be concerned with than hiding tobacco products from children.

These damn bureaucrats like to use the "protecting the children" line in order to pass their bullshit agenda. It makes me sick!!!

I guess all of the past generations who helped make our nations great had it wrong!!!

I bet this is one of the glorious ideas to tackle Scotland's bad health epidemic... might as well stop selling frying fat in shops and make fish and chips illegal for all it helps.

As usual governments taking the easy way out, leave the cause in place an tackle the symptoms...geniuses... NOT.

Has anyone actually read the bill as passed (http://www.scottish.parliament.uk/s3/bills/22-TobacPrimMedSer/b22bs3-aspassed.pdf)? [PDF]

" 1 Prohibition of tobacco displays etc.

(1) A person who in the course of business displays or causes to be displayed tobacco
products or smoking related products in a place where tobacco products are offered for
sale commits an offence.
(2) A person does not commit an offence under subsection (1) if the display—
(a) is in a specialist tobacconist,
(b) does not include cigarettes or hand-rolling tobacco, and
(c) complies with any prescribed requirements.
etc."

 Ah right. Apologies. Feeling a little sheepish now.

Still, those exceptions were never mentioned on the news or in the article I linked.

Sorry for scaremongering gents.

Sorry for my abruptness but my immediate reaction to this kind of Daily Mail-esque SOMETHING MUST BE DONE style of reporting is to see what the actual facts are.

Nothing like politicians ignoring experts and making political, instead of scientific decisions. Workd for drugs right, just ban them that'll keep the kids away :der:

I'm just glad those exceptions have been made. :smoke:

The govenment should just back away and let us make our own decisions. It should be up to parents and schools to educate children about the dangers of cigarettes and smoking and not pushed upon us. There is no point in spoiling everyones enjoyment just because some stupid kids start smoking cigarettes!

Don't be daft. That would suggest intelligence, and they can never use that to justify their fat perks, salaries an' pensions!
