Once upon a time, long ago when we were allowed to smoke in pubs and bars. I always preferred to smoke standing, well more leaning really, at the bar. I just found the drinking, smoking and conversation more relaxing and convivial that way.

These days, when I'm out in the conservatory in the winter or in the garden when it's warmer, I still prefer to smoke standing up. Maybe it's just learned behaviour, but to me it seems less restrictive and easier to smoke when my body is in a straight line.

Am I alone, or does anyone have their own preferences.

Have to disagree on that one Tippexx, for me a good cigar is definitely a sit down and relax job. Glass of malt, cup of coffee or whatever you fancy but certainly seated and relaxed to enjoy.
Each to his own though, eh!

both - but in different contexts; on a daly basis i have my cigar after lunch or dinner coupled with a drink and always seated...but often when the weather permits or when i'm away on holidays i light up a larger vitola and take a stroll for an hour or more and enjoy the different dimension this brings to my smoking eperience.

Oh absolutely.

And the picture you've painted is a very gentlemanly one. It conjours images of a Gentlemans Clubs or a withdrawing room, neither of which I have access to. Maybe I just miss the old post-PC social interaction.

With a cigarette you can just nip outside for 5 minutes. Smoking a cigar takes a wee bit longer and can be a pretty lonely hobby sometimes.

I smoke all my cigars on the treadmill
for I be chasing the DREAM!

(I far prefer sitting down, even lying down)
come to think of it, most of the best cigars ive ever had have been smoked lying on a recliner, not completely horizontal as then I can't get any smoke through the nose when im toking,
20-30 degree reclination

but i only have the inclination for a 20-30 degree reclination smoke after a day of strenuous mental labour! then the cigar is like a spiritual reward that can propel you to the great heights of sensual experience!

Poetry, man, sheer poetry.. !

Like many, I'll take it however I can get it.
But .. greatest smoking experiences (to date) have almost all been less than perpendicular (sitting and/or lying).

A favourite beach bar I often visit (on one of the Greek isles) provides beds and hammocks to enjoy one's Puro's whilst looking up at the stars.

Picture the scene: relaxing 'chill out' music is playing softly, waves are lapping lapping gently on the sand, an ice bucket is within arms reach along with an assortment of food and drink.
The warm mediterranean air is fragrant with smell of summer blossoms and dried fruit, and there in your hand is a fine 'Cuban' cigar (sorry NC lovers), awaiting two hours of 'your' attention and pleasure. Does it get any better... ???

Ask me again later in the year (I might have found a couple of alternatives to match it). Until then ...

Indeed, how often have you nipped out with cigarette smoking friends only to be abandoned and left standing about like wee Jimmy no mates.
As for the Gentlemans Club analogy, if only. Never had the opportunity, but maybe I'm just recreating this scenario as I sit enjoying my smoke.
Oh for the bygone days before being dictated to by smoking bans.

Perfect world .. ?
Sade, either singing ... just for me (New album alert! New album alert), or reclining along side, whispering 'sweet nothings' in my ear and peeling my grapes ... (NOT a euphemism .. crosses legs and winces).

Yes, I rather suspect that's happened to most of us! Worse when it's a client, then you have to abandon the smoke. Which might only be a mini, but it still lasts longer than their B&H.

A bit of both for me, standing around talking, drinking and in good company is good, but relaxing, sitting with a drink is also good. On both occasions include eating too haha

Definitely a sit-down thing for me--tends to be in my garden, under the umbrella, and with a nice coffee or whiskey. People often tell me that they can't put in the time a good cigar takes, but I respond that the fact that a good cigar takes time is one of its primary virtues.

I wish our bars (pubs) allowed us a smoke with our drinks. Bars in the U.S. tend to be sit-down affairs, though, even at the bar itself.

I much prefer to sit and relax. :41:

During the warmer months, I tend to smoke outdoors more often and enjoy a smoke while walking or doing something.
