View Full Version : A question for the vets

I just read an article in a cigar magazine about a man that smoked a really strong cigar that basically put him on his ass. I have read this in other threads and forums as well. My question is, I have never had that feeling with a cigar, I do chew though so I am wondering is my tolerance for nicotine up, or have I just not yet had that strong of a cigar? I am curious to hear from the ones who smoke cigarettes or use other tobacco products if they have been affected by a strong cigar.

I don't know why, but I've just sat here for five minutes trying to work out what this has got to do with animals and therefore why a vet would be required... Then I realised that it was probably time that I went to bed.

Anyway... I haven't really had that experience yet. But at the same time I haven't gone for a really hard hitting cigar yet. I've been happy to sit around the edges of 'full bodied' with a couple of (gorgeous) JLs, some (not so gorgeous) Montes and a Diplomatico 4 which was so plugged I almost burst a vessel trying to draw through it...

I have been smoking cigars for about 15 years now. I can't say I have had a cigar put me on my ass, so I must have a high tolerance for nicotine.

I have gotten a little light-headed a couple of times. :biggrin1:

I'm generally sitting down anyway when I smoke :41:

Guys, I'm guessing here but maybe the ass had been lame or something so he's worried he's caused more damage.

Sorry bout that Joey. Yup, heard of it happening. Was a recent thread on here about "cigars you didn't finish", not sure if thats the correct title, which detailed a few experiences. Have a look at the posts over the last week and you'll find it.

Vets: veterans?

Anyhow, being a regular smoker as well as cigars, I've not had the on your arse experience Joey. It has to be a nicotine tolerance thing.

However, when I do smoke some sticks that are strong, I get the hiccups:der:

Had that once before, many years ago with a Joya de Nicaragua Antano that really had the head swimming, probably didn't help as it was first thing in the morning on an empty stomach as well. Never had it since and happy to stick with Bolivars, RA's etc at any time of day. I did hear that if you do start to feel sick then the best cure is to suck a sugar cube or drink a fizzy sugar drink like Coke etc as this cleans the nicotine through the mouth quicker

I've had it a couple of times, but only when my blood-sugar is low or I'm drunk, but then I have been smoking tobacco for over 16 years now. Try either of those to experience it!

Joe
I've been burning tobacco products for 40 some odd years and I'd have to say
That I can't explain it but there has been times when a powerhouse of a cigar has made me lite headed and stomach rolling. I don't think it has to do with nicotine but more what I ate or didn't have to eat. This I believe is due to the fact that with certain cigars without relizing it I chew the smoke and some will back draft into my system. Hope this helps

I have never been over-faced by a cigar. Never been knocked on my ass. A term I use to myself is that I like to be "smacked up" by powerful cigars. Punch drunk, sort of thing. I like a cigar to kick.

I'm not super-tough physically, or anything, and I don't smoke cigars excessively so I don't think I've built up a major resistance. Indeed I leave two or three week gaps between cigars if I don't have the urge for one.

No. I can honestly say that a cigar has never knocked me out.

I am not a super regular smoker and I never smoked cigarettes. If I smoke a big strong cigar on an empty stomach I get very light/spinning headed.

I get the same effect these days if I drink really strong coffee having given up a few years ago after being a really heavy coffee drinker.

So I am building up in terms of the strength of cigar I smoke and if I am going to smoke a big strong one I make sure that I don't smoke on an empty stomach.

I also draw on a cigar less often than I used to when I was green. Robusto taught me to draw longer but less often to keep a cigar going better and I have found it gives me a better flavour as the cigar doesn't burn so hot.

Good input, I am starting to see a pattern that it’s not necessarily the nicotine amount in a strong cigar, but smoking a strong cigar on an empty stomach that seems to make ya turn green.

Had this happen a couple of times, and not something you want to experience. Normally happens to me by smoking something too strong on an empty stomach. Absolutely horrible feeling.

Ive hit a cigar "whitey" a few times, usually if I smoke on an empty stomach or early in the day...tend to smoke later in the day now, usually last thing at night to wind down.

Ive had a couple of light headed moments, usually at the start of a strong cigar like a Cain.

Jeez, I thought it was only me! I also get hiccups with a strong cigar! Don't know why. Can any of our resident scientists explain?

Just light headedness for me, but a work colleague shared a cigar with me and after I left him in the control room on his own, a short while later he ended up on the toilet floor sweating, dizzy, shirt ripped off and hugging the porcelain pillow for dear life. Laughed my bollocks off when he told me and wishes I'd been there to film it and take the piss!...:biggrin1:

Me too couple of times, and it's definitely not fun :biggrin1:.
I dont know if you guys now the Swedish "snuff" or "snus (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Snus)"?
If you want to get light headed then the best way is to try "snus".
It's really an nicotine "bomb" and it does not help if you have smoked 2-3 packets / day of cigarrettes your whole life.
You still get more or less ill first time trying.
I have been a regular "snuffer" for 25 years so i want to believe that i have build up an "impressive" resistance for nicotine but i still get nauseous when smoking cigars from time to time.
Mostly when smoking "fresh" LFD double ligeros, JdN Antanos and Cuban Montes.

I had my first 'light-headed experience' with a stick at the start of last week.

The Dip. No2 - it was a nice, easy going, medium bodied smoke until the last three or four draws, then I could barely stand up straight... Didn't feel particularly clever all evening after that.
