View Full Version : Beer with cigars

Now that the weather is getting warmer in the UK (or at least the sun is shining) I find myself moving from the warming spirits of winter to beers and ciders of summer. I wasn't into cigars last summer and just wondered if anyone has any suggestions for a nice niche beer or cider to accompany a fine cigar or two on a warm summer’s day. I'm particularly into organic cider at the moment from the New Forest but I’m thinking the fruity kick might overwhelm the delicate flavours of a mild cigar.

I don't know what organic New Forest cider is like .... but find very, dry cider to be OK with a cigar.

New forest organic cider is just cider how it is supposed to be made, much more flavour and kick that the commerical Magners and Bulmers types. I think i might have a bottle of dry or extra dry cider around so i might start with that:rock:.

What type of cigars do you have with your cider?

Good hoppy IPAs tend to work quite well with cigars I find. Some of the best with a cigar, in my opinion, are Sharp's Doom Bar, St Austell's Tribute and St Austell's Proper Job.

A good mild is a nice accompaniment too, with it's slight malty sweetness it can happily take the place of coke mixers. A couple of my favourite milds are Churchend Gravediggers and Summerskills Barley Mow.

I think 'pace' is one of the nicer aspects of Ales. On warm Summer evenings I prefer to drink them slower than say lagers or cider, which somehow makes them more convivial to cigars.

Not a big fan of beer TBH. I much prefer spirits, although I do like Magners and a cigar on a summers day. Bliss.:smoke:

that actually reminds me of a bacon smoked german beer i tried once.
overpoweringly strong taste of bacon. made me want to wretch... but maybe a good hair of the dog, cutting out the need for a fry-up :D

second st austels tribute too, and jennings cumberland is another current faveJennings is my favourite brewery! I'm sure I've previously posted this pic of me pulling pints at the brewery, but will do so again... :biggrin1: (Apologies for the sinister grin... )

http://www.ukcigarforums.com/gallery/files/4/3/6/pint_pulling_at_jennings.jpg

Cumberland Ale has to be the best beer that there is. Only to be drunk from a pump however - they changed the brew for the bottled version and it's nothing like the proper stuff (stronger, less flavour, fizzier - bloody supermarkets )... I also love Sneck Lifter, what a great winter beer, I've got a couple of packs at home ;) . The Dark Mild is a great mild, but I've never seen it outside of a Jennings pub... :( Another of my favourites is Golden Host, previously an April guest ale, it proved so popular that they have now started producing it more regularly (as an Organic beer, I'm interested to taste the difference, it's on at the local, so will be giving it a try tonight ).

Anyway, enough of the Jennings love-in.

as a massive real ale fanatic i could probably give you quite a list but a little advice i could give as im not sure you have a morrisions as a local supermarket, nothing beats the draught pumps, but as a supermarket in my neck of the woods they do a cracking range of real ales, german and belgium beers and have recently started to give a short brief profile on every beer on the shelf so before you buy you get an idea of what your buying as opposed to what the bottle says.

that could well be, it was definitely a rauchbier.

there used to be a great pub in croydon called the beer circus, huge seleciton of german and trapiste beers. sadly they turned it into a cocktail bar, thus came the final nail in the croydon coffin

who knows, i especially find it with beers on tap but even bottles just dont have the same quality of taste. i often see erdinger on tap in pubs and am tempted but its not a patch on beer on the continent.

i go climbing mountains in austria and at the top of many of them you'll find a little guesthouse that does home-made food, and copious amounts of beer and obstler. that first pint of weissen at the top of a 1700m mountain in the blazing sun... its to die for. of course the beer tastes better there than here after a walk round the park or down to the shops :biggrin1:

a lot of drinks dont really work well in other countries, fell in love with limoncillo in madrid, bought a bottle back and it tasted like cats pee over here in rainy britain.

This seems an appropriate thread to announce the news...

As of tonight, I am my real ale society's 'Cigar and Spirits' officer (essentially organizing cigar and single malt tastings... ;) ) - a new position, created at my behest.

POsted this up last October, and definately worth a try, although I haven't paired it up with a cigar...

"My wife and I were out for a meal last week celebrating my birthday and I had a glass of this Nice lager (http://www.kasteelcru.co.uk/home.html) . Although it was a restaurant, I thought this would go well with a cigar, for future reference. It was light and a bit 'zingy'. The bottle stated it was made with the same yeast as Champagne, although there's no mention of that on the website. Nice drop:smile:"

What a crap job (not:smile:). Excellent opportunity Simon and I guess we all hope you take full advantage of whatever comes your way. Without asking about your journey, you've made some really positive advancements over the last twelve months so good luck in all you do:thumb:

Lots of great craft brews go well with cigars. Fortunately for us here in the States we're going through a craft brew renaissance at the moment. Since it hasn't warmed up here quite yet, I'm still sipping on a few bourbon barrel aged beers paired with a stronger blend custom rolled cigar. When the temps march back up, then it's on to hoppy IPA's or Double IPA's paired with a more citrusy cigar such as a SLR A or the Bolivar 5th Avenida 109 if time permits.

ive had a few cigars with the kasteel kru, they do a rosé brew as well IIRC, works well with a cigar I thought. bottles are small and quite pricey but can be got from morrissons last time I checked

avid toker - agree with you about the American beer renaissance. The last couple of times I have been over I've tried some really nice craft-brews or beers from micro-breweries. A few of them would have gone really well with a cigar.

Another Real Ale fan here, but too many to list! But a "go to" pint for me is Black Sheep bitter, light "session" beer that goes well with a cigar without distracting from the smoking experience. Added bonus is that Masham is only 5 miles up the road from me, with Theakstone and Black Sheep Breweries, so supplies are fresh and lightly travelled at our local!

The beer circus was a great place. It's not too bad even now as the selection is more interesting than 99% of pubs I think they may have bought what stock was left over from the circus.

Just had some Badger "Tangle Foot" this weekend, nice pint, sweet, almost honey flavours, light but quiet strong (5%), went well with a cigar.
