Well I hope this is about smoking in a vehicle with a child as a passenger (which I guess only a numbskull would do anyway). I might look for a car with a chimney - theres a thought a specially adapted car for cigar smokers!

This is absolute draconian bullshit. nobody will actually take any notice of this anyways it would be impossible to police.

Being a positive sort of cove I want to try to see the up side of this.
Many savy and commercially minded businesses are starting to see that Cigar smokers can bring them customers and therefore money. The number of sampling lounges and hotels with Cigar terraces appears to be growing fairly rapidly, certainly in London with a new Sampling lounge and a new Cigar Terrace due in the next few weeks.
I was at 10 Manc last week and there was no room to sit down!
So hopefully we wont need to smoke in parks or in our cars but in civilised spots where we will find like minded friendly cigar smokers who will enjoy the fabulous clouds of whiffy pong.
Courage mon brave!!

I'm all for banning smoking around children as the number of times i've seen a mum sitting in a car with a fag on the go and young kids in the back is a worry... these people are so stupid that they need this sort of "guidance". They're probably smoking at home too. Its not only the actual passive smoking but the smoking behaviour that the kids learn.
HOWEVER I don't need to be told that on the way back from a gig alone in my little van I can't do whatever I want as long as I am not affecting others and driving safely. I never smoke when there is anyone else in the van with me (man. woman, boy or girl) its just basic good manners!

(Apart from not being able to drive, not having a van and not gigging - but if I did, it would be spot on :D ).
Very optimistic way of looking at things Nic, but you are right, there does seem to be an effort (in London at least) to create some very good cigar friendly environs.

Re smoking: I can understand why people may be annoyed or disturbed by my smoke, indeed my teenage daughter is an example of this. As such, I am very conscious of where and when I smoke. I tend to ask those who will be affected if they mind and, if outside try my best to ensure that my smoke does not blow directly at anyone. I too am annoyed by hoards of cigarette smokers congregating et entrances to buildings and creating a "wall" of smoke for everyone to walk through. Maybe I'm the only considerate one but I'm sure not.
Re smoking in a vehicle: Again, I agree that to smoke in a vehicle containing a child is stupid and irresponsible. Even with someone else in the car, if they object could be seen as at the very least selfish. As a cigar smoker, I tend to smoke more when not driving so I can relax, but appreciate you are referring to all smokers. To conclude this would be nigh impossible to police anyway but if you insist, then I would agree to an offence if there is a non consenting person or child in the vehicle.
Re smoking in places where young people congregate.
Good one here. Agree, swimming pool, swing park area of park etc not suitable. Open areas, why not. Are you also going to ban cars, factories etc from these areas?
General: Disallowing smoking in vehicle with child present is ok, however, assuming said childs family are smokers this brief respite will have little or no effect. If your argument then is to ban it in the home, I wholeheartedly and absolutely object. I do not smoke in my house but believe that whatever I do at home is up to me and I have a fundamental right to do so. I am aware of the risks in smoking but choose to accept them. I appreciate that a child in the home may not have a choice re passive smoking, but surely this is an education of the adult requirement. Your so called cost saving exercise for the health service would mean huge costs to the legal system etc. Picture if you will wee Jessie who arrives at school smelling of smoke. School contact social services who in turn contact police, who in turn visit childs home. Both parents are smokers, both say they only smoke outside. Police then need to investigate who is lying. Turns out neither but wee jessies boyfriend had a fly fag in the house when he picked her up this morning.
Bloody ludicrous when you look at it eh!!
Anyway, look forward to seeing loads of doctors and healthcare workers in the dole queues or after places in the legal professions if it all works out for you.

Agree with some posts above, you just don't smoke in a car when there are others with you, bad manners and surely no sane person would smoke with their kids in the back? :der:
But, this could be the thin end of the wedge if abused by the nanny state... What next, not allowed to smoke in your back yard/garden if your neighbours object, been banned from smoking if you have children, or your next door neighbour has children.... :stupid: Just paranoid ramblings from me hopefully!

You guys are serious and inteligent, but just for a moment try to think how many not so wise people there are out there? How many parents smoke, drink even take drugs while there is a babys arround?
Smoking is just like driving a car, you might be experienced and wise, but what about the person next to you?

So if they ban it in cars, when will they ban it in homes where children are resident [big brother ] and as a driving distraction when will they remove vanity mirrors . Common sense and courtesy must prevail, though I know are in short supply .:41:

Agree entirely but we can't just ban everything because some people are irresponsible.
Should we ban alcohol because some abuse it, tv because some are influenced by what they see.
Not meaning to be disparaging but you see the problem and how it can escalate. I believe that education is of benefit but is only any use to those who listen and who want to be educated. People do not have the same respect for others now which doesn't help. Bans etc have been tried before and failed, look at prohibition. All these things do is drive things underground and criminalise otherwise respectable and responsible people. The irresponsible ones will always be like that if they are not willing to learn. To be extreme, even if you ban knives, guns etc there will still be netters who kill. You can't punish the responsible people for the failings of others.

Sorry this is crap its simply people telling me what to do for pure puritanical pleasure. If someone isn't harming me I don't think I have any right to tell them what to do. Its not enough that they annoy me or that I disapprove of their actions.
This whole passive smoking thing is nonsense based on no data whatsoever. If anyone tells you different ask to see a primary study showing statistically significant harm caused by passive smoking. They cant because fifty years of searching for evidence of harm has found nothing zero nada.
The world used to be filled with sexual puritans who felt they could tell grownups who and how they should screw. We have replaced these people with health puritans who seem to feel the same obligation to tell us what to do.

The only good thing, is that (according to the radio this morning) the muppets in charge (read parliament) aren't planning on listening to these 'sensible' recommendations.
Personally I think it'd be another stupid law that the police won't be able to enforce. And that's before I even think about the human rights implications over telling me what I can't do in MY car that I paid for with MY money.
If they government weren't going to outlaw smoking and driving when the slightly less ludicrous argument of distractions/safety was cited as a reason, why should they now? It wouldn't surprise me if it was the same bunch of muppets areguing again but with a different reason behind it. It seems there are people who are hell bent on prying the last few pleasures we have left away from us.
Fucking 'tards.

They can't enforce the sensible laws like no telephone while driving why do they think a ban would work on smoking in vehicles? Crazy. Instead of going further down the ban ban ban road they should allow a closed smoking room where an establishment wants to provide one. This on top of the fact that the politicans are all for sale makes me go Grrr and Gnang.

What a lot of BOLLOCKS.
Excuse me for a moment, must rush down to the bookcase with my pen and scissors. Should manage to obliterate the cigars in any pics ofChurchill, Groucho Marx,, George Burns. Then of course cut Raleigh out of the encyclopedia, oh and cigar, tobacco and cigarette out of the dictionary. Wonder what they would call the law, not wanting to refer to anything that may lead some poor misguided soul to light a leaf or two.
Aww shit, the holidays abroad are fecked too in case anyone sees one of these nasty irresponsible Johnny Foreigner type chappies doing it.
Goodness me, this will be difficult stuff, but if Nanny says its best.........

I'm infuriated by this blanket legislation approach.
I'm infuriated by the removal of smoking from photos and films and album covers to 'un-exist' smoking. It is George Orwell in action.
I'm infuriated by thick people who smoke around children.
I educate and have to try to get things across to numerous thick people quite a lot. Not just subject specific stuff but 'life skills' type stuff... which is more important.
I'll say something very wrong. I'll stop.
I had a BNP leaflet through the door as a pre-emptive election brochure type blitz the other day and it attacks - next to the other vile incitements - governments which tell you what to do and governments which ban things all the time. Right Wing/Communist/Extremist Mixed-Up Bollocks stuff. They all go for hating.
No fags in cars... A vote winner for the 'parties' that pander to the disenchanted?... Vote BNP and light up next to your toddler.
I get fed up with this stuff because I'm not thick but am made to feel so because of government edicts and pathetic things like blanking out smoking in black and white films. When will they blur out the weapons in Black Hawk Down? I love that but won't spray machine guns about because I've seen it.
I get fed up because although comfortable smoking lounges will possibly flourish in big cities - and doubtless in London - they are never going to be the norm out in Smallville. Nearest cigar depot about 40 miles away from me. The last cigar stockist in Canterbury shut down a while back due to the effect of the smoking ban. Now it's a tubed Waitrose if you're gagging.
I was pissed off when I heard this on the radio yesterday morning. It's patronising.
Like Drew, if I want to smoke a whiffy one off on a drive home alone after a gig, who the fuck is going to be there to stop me?
Grrr...
If the stupid people tend to walk on the edge of cliffs and fall off, why should I be kept away from the cliffs completely? (one for daverave lol).
Watch out anyone who likes a drink.
You'll be next.

Just while I remember...
I was pissed off about banning smoking in pubs but have come round to it. I do agree with my missus that smoke covered up the smell of urinals in pubs, tho, and that many pubs now smell old bloke rank.
Smoking alone in your car is not antisocial. It's not like a pub.
Walking through a park with your dog enjoying a cigar is harmless. If a passer by smells the smoke, they've received a Cuban Benediction in my opinion.
And if they cop for one sniff and moan - and they never do...
Tough shit! Cope with it! :(
In parks, boot fairs, dog walks, beach walks, dog shows in the past year... if people have said anything, they have said...
That cigar smells wonderful. We could smell it from the other side of the field. :)

Tremendous rant Sir. Thought I was on a roll yesterday but your mood this morning must make mine of yesterday seem like a sunny spring morning.
You speak nothing but good old common sense, the common sense and respect that even the "thick" people used to understand.
Your comment re people commenting on the smell from your cigar is perfect. Have had the same response myself, however, dly the ban would not take into account that many people enjoy the smell of a good cigar (as opposed to cigarette) and would just look at smoking as a whole.
On that subject though.....Another thing I believe should be banned.
I want the government to ban (and I'll be lenient here'ie only in indoor areas, public transport etc.).......FARTING.
Bloody antisocial, especially in lifts, but permissable in the sanctity of your own home(as long as you can still get away with blaming the dog)
HM's finest should find a way of DNA testing farts, so they can name, shame and fine the antisocial bastard that dropped it.
What??? Too far??? Never heard anyone tap someone on the shoulder and say "by the way old chap, just had to say that one you dropped in the corridor back there smelled absolutely marvellous."
