View Full Version : Smoking with a cold

Well I’ve managed to pick up some nasty cold which means I can't smell anything, running nose, feeling like  and can't even cheer myself up by enjoying a nice drink or cigar as I just can't taste anything. I tried at the weekend, first cigar (smoke the same brand before so I know what to expect) didn't do anything for me, I could tell that it was lit, my mouth was full of smoke, the nicotine hit me but either someone swapped it out with cardboard or smoking a cigar with a cold is not the best idea. Cigar number two was better having my nose pre blasted with Strepsils and Vicks to clear it although I could tell the medicinal aftertaste drowned out the initial subtle flavours and towards the end of the cigar the nose was bunged up again leading to an overall unsatisfactory smoking event and 2 cigars down.
So has anyone got any tips on how to enjoy a cigar while bunged up? I think I might try one of the cheap NC towards the end of the week but I don't want to waste a cigar and write one off that might be a good smoke simply for the fact I can't appreciate it properly at the moment. Or should I just concentrate on getting rid of the dam cold and make up for lost time when I’m healthy again?

Sounds like the best idea to me!

A year ago, I had an appalling cold over my 50th birthday and into the New Year. As you can imagine, I had planned to enjoy one or two fine celebratory cigars over this period.
The clag went on and on... and in the end I decided to light up a Punch Rare Corojo (as *BOMBED* for my birthday by Cohiba IV) and attack all blockages.
I could only taste and smell a fraction of the stick's glory BUT that olfactory attack helped push the germs away and I started to feel human the next day as the tide receded.
Within two days, my senses had returned to normal and I smoked off my reserved cigars a fortnight or so after my actual birthday date.
So, from my experience, I continue to ATTACK established colds with potent sticks - as you have attempted - to see if it parts the ghastly tide as it did for me. I was depressed with the status quo and wanted to clear out the bugs with great determination. It worked for me then, and again earlier this year. :cowboyic9:

:nerd: Actually, this is how I determine if I'm sick - If I don't feel like sparkin' up a puro, I'm definitely http://smiley.onegreatguy.net/sick.gifsick!
Names :catsmoker: Perro, El Perro, and cigars and colds not mix....very well, that is http://smiley.onegreatguy.net/wink.gif.

I'd leave it until you are well enough to enjoy them properly. Seems such a waste to do otherwise!

I'm with tippexx on this one. No point in wasting any good stogies. Just abstain till you get better.

Like Robusto,
I too couldn't resist and smoked a stogie at the tail end of a cold. I got only a fraction of what I was after, but, in a sense, it was a nice break from that drudgery and, while it didn't kill the cold, it certainly set me on the way to healthy living.

Okay okay i get it isn't a good idea. Might just have to overdose on lemsip and strepsils to purge this curse from my weak body.

Solidarity brother! :849: on the wagon with you, been to the quacks today to be diagnosed with a proper case of "man" flu!, blood ("why, that's nearly an arm full!" - for all Hancock fans here... :hail:) and other samples taken (don't ask....) now on antibiotics.
Hope to be back on the cigars in a week or two. :41:

I'm surprised Acid hasn't created a Vicks flavored cigar. That would sell like crazy during the flu season:biggrin1:

If you have the need to smoke during a cold, go buy some Hamlets lol.. That way you can get a fix and 'pretend' your smoking the real thing :biggrin1:

If your sick your sick and a cigar is not going to help matters. Take care of yourself and the cigars will taste much better when your well. Try Teatree oil in abowl of steaming water 2 drops and put a towel over your head and bowl and breath deeply through your nose and it will strip away your sinus infection quickly. Repeat 3 to 4 Xs a day.

Just don't get a cold :-)
All it takes is quitting smoking cigarettes, do some sports outside and get your body used to resist your environment in general.
Best thing is to quit cigarette and you will see how colds and flues disapear, or significantly make themselves rare, from your life.
Till then I wouldn't waste my cigars with a cold on.

I wouldn't waste a good cigar on a cold. Why have something fine that you can't appreciate. Get better then enjoy 'em fully.
