Sometimes I am allowed out. Sometimes that means London, and the outing usually centres on moving my son up from my quiet town on the Kent Coast to another flat or dwelling in the capital city.

You have to understand how impoverished NO-CIGAR life is on the South-East Kent coast. Sure I cuddle my humidor a lot and keep her adequately stuffed. However, if I step out of my house to seek a good cigar - and if I discount supermarket tubos - I have to drive in my car for about an hour to reach the Dickens Wine Emporium in Rochester. Here, behind glass humidor doors, you can claw at Cohibas in a frenzied state.

And that is just about it for cigar stores in Kent. Maybe there are places in 'posh' Kent like Tunbridge Wells and Sevenoaks. They are quite a way North from me, so I don't know.

Which brings me to the near sexual frenzy of being able to see and sense a well-stocked humidor. That nice Nic Wing tipped me off about BURLINGTON BERTIE'S in Houndsditch. This happens to be less than half a mile's walk from where my son now lives so it will be a good stroll out for smoking thrills whenever I am in Whitechapel.

This is NOT exclusively a sit-down cigar parlour but it is worth knowing it's on the map if you ever go sight-seeing around in the Swiss Tower / Gherkin / City of London area. On all of these days in London, I ALWAYS have a bulging pocket of three of my finest cigars in a leather case... but I ALWAYS want to sniff out a different cigar if there is one to be found.

The humidor at Burlington Bertie's is well stocked with a good range of various sizes of BEST OF Havanas, and beyond. (I reiterate - I would be BESIDE MYSELF to have a store with such stock within an hour of where I live).

I chose a Juan Lopez Seleccion Suprema (2009 UK Regional Edition) because I love Juan Lopez, and because this was a sizeable monster of a cigar to enjoy after a copious, inexpensive and beautifully prepared Pakistani curry lunch at the end of my son's street. TAYYAB's - I strongly recommend! (http://www.tayyabs.co.uk/)

I do like a big chomper of a cigar when the occasion presents itself, and walking around the financial district and posing for prattish pictures underneath the Gherkin is reason enough to set me off. :)

The cigar shop / tobacconnists has a lot of other pass-by shop goods in it. There were many large pots of pipe tobacco. (A mystery world to me). I struck up a conversation with the owner and we were interrupted by quite a lot of people passing through the shop. I didn't ask the chap's name because of these interruptions (rude of me) but he knows Mitch and the other named cigar places across the city to Teddington.

The owner explained that trade was not as it was before the smoking restrictions were put in place. He had set up the first cigar lounge in the UK, having smoked one off himself in a lounge at Dubai Airport and been completely transfixed in the luxurious surroundings. What was the cigar lounge is now a sandwich and coffee bar. He regretted very much that in the past he would set up a bottle of Port for Friday 4.00pm and that the office guys into cigars would come down and smoke in the store til 7.00pm as an absolute ritual. That cannot happen now because of the indoor smoking restrictions.

When I think about that story, I get really annoyed about the adverse effects of the smoking restrictions. How can that cigar-smoker-consenting camaraderie ever be brought back?

I had been wondering about whether a vibrant Cigar Life goes on in the City with many folk around whom I'd presume to have plenty of money to burn (ho ho) on this passion. I don't know the area or commerces here at all so cannot comment on that.

If anybody reading this knows this shop or the area, it would be great to learn more.

What I did appreciate is that on those occasions when I drive up to Whitechapel, I know there is a local cigar store that I can take a walk to and find a monster that I don't have amongst my usuals.

A selection of photos of the day is below for your viewing delight.

I love the photos. That looks like a cracking humidor that they've got there. I'll have to take a trip across and visit next time I'm in London.

Can I just confirm though - do they have a little sampling area or has that now gone?

No, Simon. :(

I thought I'd be able to light up and toke away in a cigar shop like a chap should but it wasn't possible. The owner pointed out the best smoking seats etc nearby that he himself pops out to smoke at.

That's really what I meant by writing how fed up the restrictions make me feel at times.

I didn't know whether to write this 'story' because of the number of sophisticated London men :biggrin1: on the forums who might know of this place. I did write it after all because I think our spaces here should be for us each to share our discovered ports of call.

If anyone knows of any good cigar stores in Suffolk, I'm there for a fortnight in August and would like some gen!

A man at peace with his Gherkin!

and (trying to sound quite cross actually) don't every apologise for your prose or your pictures on here Robusto, it's what keeps us sane around the "I just got bombed with a new 2c NC" bilge.

I think I'm getting vainer by the month because I do like to be photographed working a good cigar. That's why I lobbed the last one in. I loved shoving foreign tourists out of the way to get a good angle on that Gherkin. What's more, I think God made me look very stern when relaxed, and a cigar in the mush forces you to be a bit grown-up Kindergarten. A bit Marx Brothers.

Well, just a bit... but it's hard to look miserable with a fat one on the go.

If nobody else fesses up to the same thing, I guess I'll just have to consider myself a right old perve. I know I've got an element of stage in me, but I don't want to torture you with it.

My Rosary beads are real sweaty, hun...

Too true! I'm also a fan of the photo with cigar on the go - see profile pic. I'll have to give one or two a go with it still in gob though - see if that makes me even more stoic in appearance. :849:

Simon, bloody fantastic Robusto summary there!

Well thank you, kind Sirs. :biggrin1:

I think because I had an exaggerated fear of being discovered smoking by teachers who would comb the playing fields with arc lights on their jeeps at boarding school - no kidding with that... You'd think they were hunting bears - ...

Well, with a lot of back-baggage to shed, I'm so happy to enjoy great cigars in complete comfort with friends, family and co-members of forums like this.

To be honest, that's why I'm happy to try to get a good photo whenever possible.

If I chucked in a couple of cigars for a photo comp (like Deano ran once before), I wonder if there would be many takers?

I'd discount myself because I won the competition last time! LOL

Other important things do count in my life. I'm not the nuttiest of cigar nuts BUT they are one of my indispensable pleasures.

Amen.

Oh great little article, thanks. I have never been to this store but heard it mentioned many times. It came up in conversation again last night and now I see this article, cheers.

I will have to visit it one day but it is rather off the beaten track for me, an extra effort will have to be made though.

Regarding your mention of Tunbridge Wells, no cigar store there I am afraid. There is an off license with a few okay sticks and the Hotel du Vin that used to be good but is nothing remarkable humidor wise now, sadly.

I have to go back and look at your pics more closely. If you have any more of the interior of the store I would love to see them, particularly the stock! LOL

Hello Trevor.

I had always presumed there might be a decent cigar emporium in the Pantiles part of Tunbridge Wells. I've played in nearby Sevenoaks but only arrived there late on so couldn't cigar shop. They seem like intelligent and affluent places.

The only cigars I've bought in that area were from a very nice Waitrose on the Tonbridge industrial estate. I bought some tubed H Upmanns to herf with a guitarist buddy in Tunbridge Wells and the sod tried to smoke about a third of the stick before riding his Marlboro lights again. I'm such a skivvy that I finished my stick and then finished his abandoned one. No waste! No waste!

This is acceptable outside a boozer but perhaps less svelte when on the white leather.

Being something of a shy boy, I took but one picture of the Bertie humidor - that picture shown above - because I hadn't presented myself to the owner but had immediately zoomed in on the cabinet like an obsessed thing without asking permission and feared being security camera'd. (I had my son on the look-out so I wouldn't be arrested). All I can say is that it is very varied and well stocked. It's NOT a token gesture humi in the corner.

I'm back in cigar-less SE Kent now but think I'll blast off some Churchill or other on my patio right now... Simply because I can.

I'm supposed to be doing cruddy paperwork for the day job, but it is really far too boring.

Tunbridge Wells is not what it used to be, the best wine emporia is now sadly gone, oh dear.

Tonbridge Waitrose, been there, the one in Crowborough is better and closer for me. Sod all cigars though.

I totally agree with you regarding the Upmann, I may well have done the same and finished it, oh wait, I have done that, with a Sir Winston! LOL

I am equally shy and so rarely even dare take one of my cameras out, but more afraid of rubbing the store manager up the wrong way than the idiot Police.

Grand read for the start of the day anyway, cheers!

Burlington Bertie's is a must visit. It's not just about the cigars but the owner, Vimal Shah. I know Vimal personally and he is a great guy who knows his cigars. He will always give you great advice.

How well I remember those Fridays at his shop:smoke:

A really friendly guy when I went in there. I agree.
As my son lives just down the road, and as the owner has an enticing stick stock, I'll be heading back when I'm next near the City. :biggrin1:

Robusto - I may well get lynched for this, but: I've lived in Ipswich for a couple of years now, and whilst I don't claim to be an expert, know of no good local cigar shops. There is a small Tobacconist in Ipswich, with a reasonable range of pipe tobacco and cigaretts, but the only cigars that I have ever purchased (from their small range) have been hideously dry.

If anyone can put me right, I shall be a happy man!

Not a great deal to choose from in Suffolk as far as I'm aware :(. Might want to try Ashton's in Ipswich. Very small shop but has a variety of Cuban and Non-Cuban and mostly, but not exclusively tubed, nothing on the scale of Burlington's though! A better bet may be Lorford's in Bury St Edmunds who has a larger walk in humidor, not a bad selection of smokes which you might find of interest.
