In the big smoke today and fairly close to jjfoxes thinking of popping in and sampling a couple of sticks on my list. Had a look on the web to price the said sticks but noticed the prices online are web only. Does anybody know how the instore prices compare? I'll be around from about 5 for a quick taster if anybody is interested or local.

Can be more expensive in store but still worth a visit.

Doesn't see too bad a site. I particularly like the individual rating badges they have for smoke, strength and overall quality. HavaHavana seems to still offer the best price for the Behike though.

Lads, was the Monte the special aged double banded unit in the small coffin?
They had a quantity of those last time I was in and I tried one at Jean's suggestion and it was really great.

Nic I don't think so there is just one band on the monte. Pleased that I managed to get one as when I asked they said they had none. Randomly there was one sitting with another box of single montes so was the last as far as I'm aware.
Crslaytor yes I agree the prices are very different on the web the hoyos are £10 where as in store they were £14-19 althought these were the speacial aged stock. They didn't have any unaged stock in.

Yeah I agree the face to face value and the ability to chose your own sticks is a different experience which is sometimes worth the extra.
As a side note a guy was in there at the same time who refused to buy because he felt the stogies were too dry. I'm sure jj's know what they are doing and all the stock was perfect IMHO.

Hey lads, was the guy who wouldn't buy a Brit or an American?
Desmond Sautter once told me that he had an American customer who wanted his cigars so wet he could "wring some juice out of them"
No accounting for taste!

FWIW I have smoked many sticks from JJF's and never felt aware they were in anything but great condition. (I cannot say the same for all London retailers).

Are you kidding me?
Before I start let me point out that JJ Fox is one of my top retailers IN LONDON to buy from and now smoke at. I love the staff and the more relaxed feel to the place. It is a little like going back twenty years in the feel and slower pace in the shop. They have given myself and others some GREAT deals and they have some unusual stock and aged cigars.
However......
Well kept, not always! Until recently they had carpet in the humidor and that always made me uncomfortable. It smelt "odd" in there, I assume due to the carpet having been damp for so long and this odour cannot have been a good thing. I often felt concern that it would harbour mould spores and encourage its spreading. I suspect it also made it difficult to keep an appropriate humidity in the humidor. This carpet is now gone, thank god.
On one occasion I have was looking at aged stock (Hoyo DC in this case) and found beatle holes in the cigars. The attendant at the time (remains nameless) looked shocked and removed the damaged stick (one of which they let me smoke, just put my finger over the hole). Now tobacco beetle happens, we all know that. Does this reflect on JJ Fox, well probably not. It was aged stock they may well have purchased from somebody who let the cigars get too warm. It did remind me though that the temperature in the humidor can be wide of the ideal mark.
As I say, I like JJ Fox hugely and continue to put it on my cigar list of must visit regularly, but I cannot agree that they keep the cigars perfectly, not when compared to some retailers.

I agree with Trevor on this, however; they have made steps in recent times to improve the storage of their cigars and i will say i cannot recall a time when i have smoked a cigar from there that i have had any issue with. It also is one of my favorite places in London.

I must say the stick I bought were in v good condition. Just can't wait to try them now. I didn't get to try the sampling lounge which I was a bit gutted about but I'm sure there will other occassions in the future.

When I was in London last week I spent some time in the shop and smoked a few cigars in the lounge. I did notice some difference in the prices of the singles, but I would be happy to pay double the price for the priviledge of being able to "sample" in the shop... We dont have this luxury here in Ireland! I didn't notice if the prices were different between young and aged stock, as I was shopping in the vintage section. Some great aged stock in there!
I liked the fact the lounge was upstairs, it offers some privacy, but it was a bit smokey! At some stage there was seven smoking and I could hardly see accross the room! From speaking to the guys in the shop, I believe they have plans to expand it and improve the extraction, which would be nice.
I found the cigars in the walkin to be in good condition, despite all the feeling, squeezing and sniffing that they have to endure on a daily basis. If the cigars were dry, they would have been destroyed! I was surprised to hear that there was a carpet in the humidor and I'd say they are delighted to see it gone...
