View Full Version : Arturo Fuente?

I just had my first Arturo Fuente, a Don Carlos #2 that was a birthday present from a friend, and not a cheap one, I might add. It had been sitting in my tupperdor for a good amount of time, and every time I thought of trying it, I thought more highly of a Cuban I knew than an Arturo I'd barely met. My mistake.
This thing was damn good from beginning to end; it had that certain tanginess that good Cubans often have, and a nice pepperiness that increased all the way to the end. The burn was perfect, and the ash thick and solid such that I don't think I needed to remove it, although I did.
Now the price point is a bit steep, in the Cohiba range, so I don't know if it'll be box-worthy until my funds go up or I just give up on caring about the credit card statement (or my wife's berating me until she sees fit to buy a new pair of shoes for herself), but I was curious about people's views on the line. I haven't had a Hemingway, and I hear good things. Any hands- or, so to speak, mouths-on experience with these?
In any case, I'd say those with a penchant towards the Cuban-only point of view, which was me for a while, ought to take a stab at these sticks.
Ive had a few from the fuente line, opus x, fuente, anejo and can say all have been disappointing, I'm being reserved I will say all have been shit.
Just a lot of spice that overpowers the senses and nothing else. construction is good like many NCs but its all hype and I dont believe it!

I hear you, and that's why I usually stay away from nc's--but this one had flavor, not just spice. Have you had the Hemingway?

Have a box of the Don Carlos No.2's, Hemingway Classic and Short Story...
All fabulous smokes IMHO that I wouldn't mind recommending to anyone...
That said, these were all purchased when I was 'new' to cigars and like you said due to the price point Im not sure I'd purchase any of these again over a box of Cubans at a similar price...!!!
Cheers, HabanoSy

How's the shorty story stack up? I'm thinking of grabbing one of these from the local tobacconist.

Very impressed with this stick, well worth a purchase IMO...

im afraid not, im sacred to go near anything fuente again, especially due to the price point. I cant risk spending cohiba money on a stick i might not enjoy.
I have 2 opus X A's sitting in their coffins since last year and dare not touch them...maybe after 5 years some of the spice may have worn off and ill give them a blast but not a day before!

Fuente says they'll never rush the hands of time. That used to be true back in the day. Had several opus in the last couple of years that were just like kdot said all spice and no flavor. Till the other night I had an opus shark. Now here is a fine example of a good fuente cigar. Power, flavor, and character is what it was all about.
Had a god of fire about a week ago that was the same way! Just a pleasure to smoke(thanks Tim).
Had all kinds of fuentes and like them. The Don Carlos is outstanding (superior to hemingway imo) but too expensive. Just like lots of fuentes they sport a cameroon wrapper. I'm a big fan of cameroon wrappers. I'd like to see the day when you could pick up a nice cuban with a cameroon wrapper. Wonder how that would taste? Wonder if it'll ever be possible?

Kdot, I agree with you. The last Fuente I had just overpowered my taste buds like to much tabasco in a bloody mary.
Not my cup of whatever.....

Interesting--I found the Don Carlos to be no stronger than a Party SD4, which, I suppose, is on the stronger side of things.

:nerd: I must respectively disagree with my good friend senor :kev: Kmart...respectively, of course.:41:
I am a fan of A. Fuente cigars and have tried all mentioned on this thread so far. One thing I have noticed with the higher-end limited annual stogies (Opus X, anejo) as well as other top-end sticks (Don Carlos, Hemingway) is that they can be inconsistent, especially the annual line. But when they are good, mmmmm, they are oh soooo fine. :thumb:
:hmmmm: Perhaps my favorite A. Fuente, based on solid taste, consistency, and value, is the A. Fuente 858, which comes in natural, claro, and maduro wrappers. A staple stogie in TJ's massive humidor, it is.

I can smoke SD4s for breakfast lunch and dinner and still not get enough, I dont find the partagas line to be that strong.
the several fuentes Ive had are another beast all together. those who have not tried em, think bolivar strength on steroids!
And addressing the mexicants drivel, inconsitencies at this price point sould be rare, if that is the case. However I think he's brain washed by the Fuente marketing machine, next he'll be telling us how much he loves Nubs!
yes I went there!

I cut my cigar teeth on Fuente Cigars and I'd say the Don Carlos are my favorite of the "Black Band" lines.(Don Carlos,Hemingway and Sun Grown)
In my opinion, the Hemingways are good too.More on the sweeter side for my tastes though.

I have to side with Senor Coro on this one! The Fuente line is outstanding. Personally, my favourite is the Anejo Shark! It is a full-bodied masterpiece. A man's cigar, not for va jay jays! :biggrin1:

Well then, seeing as how this thread has become scientific in its precision and objectivity, I think I will do some experimenting of my own and grab myself a couple of these here Fuentes. Good luck with your vajayjays. :849:

I finally got my hands on a Hemingway, a Best Seller, and sat down to have a smoke. I must say, this is a fantastic smoke. In terms of the construction and burn, it was absolutely perfect. I ashed once or twice, but didn't need to, really, and the burn line was perfect, as was the construction of the beautifully shaped perfecto.
As for the flavor, read on. It began as a sweet, nutty flavor that only got richer and deeper as the cigar progressed. I've heard it described as leathery and full of cedar, which sounds about right. It's not quite as salty as a Mag 48, but it reminded me of that a bit. I would describe the overall flavor profile as a sort of umame flavor--very tasty but not overpowering. There's no pepper here, or only a hint in the last third, which makes for lighter fare perfect for a nice, warm afternoon in the sun as I read the Rolling Stone's article on Exile on Main St.'s new master (which is fantastic, by the way [the album, not the article]). An excellent hour spent, all told.
I'll be getting more of these Best Sellers, particularly at a little over six bucks a stick. Highly recommended.

Haven't wanted to touch the remaster. For me so much of that album is about the atmosphere and KR's haze, remastering I think will kill that.

I hear you, though I think they avoided the issue. The back story is interesting--Jagger is not a big fan of the album, but Richards, obviously, is. Richards was in charge of the original album's remastering and pretty told the dudes to not mess with what was already what it should be, so it's not pristine like the new Beatles remasters are. The bonus tracks, on the other hand, were under Jagger's purview, and these are distinctly clearer (and less interesting, save for their historical import).

Sun Grown ! Always consistant in taste and value . I have a box sitting now for over a year and to me when I want a Fuente on the cheap that the one.

Thanks for the remaster info, I may consider and give it a go. Found the Beatles remasters un-listenable.

I quite liked them, especially the Mono, so maybe you won't dig the Stones remaster. What didn't you like about them?

Lasted over two hours, a good smoke.
