Details are sketchy at the moment, the email I got on my phone didn't come through correctly, but Corona Cigars are saying that Mayor Crotty (sp) has issued an outdoor smoking ban on all county property, including streets etc. I will post up the email when I get home :(

Orange County, Florida:
Mayor Crotty Bans Use of Tobacco Products

Effective January 1, 2010, the use of tobacco products (including: cigars, pipes, cigarettes, chewing tobacco, snuff, snus, and hookahs) on all county owned and leased land was outlawed through an order signed by Orange County's Mayor Richard T. Crotty as he and a coalition of anti-tobacco supporters work to make the entire county tobacco-free.

This OUTDOOR ban comes on the heels of Florida's statewide existing indoor smoking ban which is already in affect.

Several major cities, including Orlando, reside in Orange County and the local economy heavily relies on tourism.

The ordinance now outlaws the use of any tobacco product in areas such as outdoors at the Orange County Convention Center, County parks, fishing docks, boat ramps, outdoor trails, county owned parking lots, streets and sidewalks.

Additionally, in order to maintain employment, County employees are required to sign an affidavit which states that any employee who enjoys more than four cigars per year they will be fined $650 each year they violate the tobacco policy.

On March 19, 2010, Mayor Crotty's anti-tobacco campaign received a boost when he allocated $6.6 million in federal stimulus funds (supposed to be used to create jobs) to the Orange County Health Department to prevent tobacco usage.

Please Contact These Orange County Lawmakers:

CRA is urging members in Florida and across the country to take action by contacting Mayor Richard T. Crotty and the county commissioners to express your opposition to this tobacco policy and your support of seeing the ordinance reversed.

Remember to tell these lawmakers that "enjoying a cigar is not a crime!"

Why cigars? All the research ever mentions is cigarettes as a health concern. My own physician told me two weeks ago that there is no evidence that smoking a cigar a day is a health hazard. But what does he know? He's only a doctor.

doesn't the government have anyone else to harass? What a bunch of limp-wristed fucks. I thought it was bad in Canada for smoking laws, but this is ridiculous. This will set a precedence for other cities to use. Thank you mayor Cruddy:mad:

Lol, I've been going every year for the last 7, I love the place. Even considering buying a house there. See if they try to stop me smoking on my own property. They way I read it its just county property. I'm going to sosa cigars at downtown disney every night for a fresh rolled one, they can't stop me walking around with one on Walts property

Local, not national govt. One has to ask why, is there any significant health risk from second-hand smoke on the streets?

I suspect not so this is the 'we know better than you and are going to protect your health at the expense of your freedom' bullshit.

Criminalisation has systematically failed to address any of society's vices and indeed in several cases has made it massively worse (do some research on the insignificant Heroin addiction problem pre-1971 ban for a tragic example of how legislation has, and continues to take thousands of lives).

The chance of legislators ever separating cigarettes and other more respectable habits like cigars I fear is non-existent.

Things probably more dangerous in Florida that outside smoking: (not too serious a list :) )
Air Boats with big propellers on the back
Alligators / crocodiles
Gun-toting hicks
Dangerous driving
Alcohol
Obesity and junk food (ban MacD eating on the street, now that would be progress)
Miami Ink
Miami Vice
The Golden Girls

[QUOTE=monkey66;90704]Local, not national govt.

Almost always is. Conker banning starts small time local but sooner or later some national department shithead sees there's an empire of paperwork, stats an' bureaucratic advancement to be built on the back of it.

And we're the fools .... we pay them and allow them massive pensions to ruin our lives. No wonder we're not allowed guns in this country!

Can't believe this. You know this is going to filter into opinion elsewhere. Won't be long until we see it on the streets of London etc.

Not a good day for a cigar smoker.

Doesn't Orange County owned and leased land belong, technically, to the people of Orange County? ALL the people, not just some of them?

Or is the county a personal fiefdom? One for the lawyers, methinks, and an injunction to start with!

It's like this in Tokyo, no smoking except in designated areas on the street and not without a personal ashtray.

It seems daft that it's cigar smokers being targeted rather than cigarette smokers. What's worse - an inconsiderate bugger dropping 4 biodegradable cigar stubs a year on the floor or 10 non-biodegradeable cigarette butts a day littering the floor? And would you rather have to walk past someone smoking a cigarette or a cigar? All of my non-smoking friends would probably agree on the cigar.

It's not even velvet fascism, it's straight-up infringement of personal freedom. I'm with the G-Man - 1% all the way, FTW if this is what it's offering.

I suspect not so this is the 'we know better than you and are going to protect your health at the expense of your freedom' bullshit.
I think even that is a rationalization these days. Tobacco has simply become a boogeyman, much like the evil gun sitting on a table suddenly uprighting itself and shooting somebody.
