I stumbled across this forum whilst doing a bit of cigar-related research and though it seemed a pretty cool place, so this is just a quick note to introduce myself.

I?m basically a non-smoker who has been turned onto cigars through one of my biggest passions ? coffee. I?ve had a couple of cigars of mixed quality in the past and every time I finish a cup of espresso the smell from the cup reminds me of that of a cigar; I think the two things have quite a few of the same flavours in common. So I paid a visit to my local tobacconist and picked out a couple of decent cigars as Christmas presents.

I smoked the first, a Partagas Series D No. 4, last weekend and enjoyed not only the cigar itself but the whole process of sealing myself off in a well ventilated room with just a radio and half a bottle of vintage port for company ? very nice! I understand the Partagas is a strong smoke and nice though it was, I?d had enough after nearly 2/3rds.

I?ve pencilled my second cigar in for Friday evening. It?s an R&J Short Churchill, which should be a bit lighter and better suited to drinking with coffee, so I?m looking forward to it.

After that I?m planning on getting hold of a little selection to try and also building a makeshift Tupperware humidor so as I can keep them in tip-top condition. Then we?ll just see how it goes. I might post about the humidor later and ask for a bit of advice.

I think coffee and cigars are incredibly similar types of tastes and smells. I actually looked up once whether as plants they are related. I can't remember the answer.

The Partagas D4 as an entry cigar! That's brilliant! It is a lover of a cigar, and is a strong one for a debutant.

I like to pass time with Radio 4, strong Assam tea - however cold - and my good self with a Havana.

Hi Olls, welcome aboard! I have to agree with Bryan about tea and cigars. I like a strong cup of Bewleys Irish breakfast myself...

...and you can't get much better than a D4.

Welcome, thanks for signing up.
I much prefer a tea with a cigar, find coffee doesn't compliment it due to being too strong/thick. Can't explain it.
Definitely has to be a Earl Grey for me.

So there seems to be a big tea following around here, eh? I like a good cup of tea but I tend to drink it during the day because the coffee at work is unbearable. Then once I get home it's coffee all the way for me. I will have to give the cigar/tea combo a go, though.

You're right Robusto - with hindsight the Partagas isn't ideal for a beginner. That said though I don't think it was too strong, per say, it's more that strength sustained over 45 mins or so was a bit much. What I could manage was tasty.

They used to have hot drinks machines at BBC centre and it didn't matter whether you bough coffee or tea... they both tasted the same... like a horrible tea/coffee/chocolate/soil hybrid.... all the technicians used to call it "Uni-quench". Thats optimism at work!
