View Full Version : Gin and tonic and cigars...
After three or four goes I have come to the conclusion that, for me anyway, a G&T don't go with a cigar. I love a Gordons and tonic on a lovely summer's day, but it leaves such a strong taste in the mouth I find it clashes with a cigar.
Is this just me? Now, a Havana Club and fresh orange is just the business.
Must get round to making a Mojito this weekend too. Never made my own before...
Best I've ever had were at Annabel's nightclub in London (thank god I wasn't paying) and in South Beach, Miami.

I'll agree to disagree. Nothing better than a pint of gin and tonic with a cigar after a long day at work although i'll admit if i'm having strong tasting food or drink it has to be with a strong cigar. Although G&T does leave a taste in the mouth i find it to be a refreshing palette cleanser. The sharpness of the citrus tends to over power most cigars but it all depends what mood you are in i suppose.

Hendricks with fever tree tonic and cucumber...
...matched with something grassy like Sancho Panza Belicoso or Rafael Gonzales Lonsdale.

Gentlemen, with summer threatened to start any day now I feel it is beholden on me to head out and get hold of as many different types of gin as I can lay my hands on and get stuck in to the serious research for the good of the forum.
My humidor bulges and reeks so I am heading to the Off Licence....... I may be some time!!!

I'm with you Jono. Don't think they go together.
Mind you, I've only tried it once and am quite prepared to have my opinion challenged!

I love a G&T but not with a cigar. Sloe gin on the other hand....wowza. I think sloe gin has accompanied most of my cigars. Has to be Gordon's though....unless anyone has recommendations of other brands?!?!

I recently enjoyed a martini made with http://www.drinkhacker.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/02/citadelle-gin-199x300.jpgCitadelle Gin.
A most excellent martini, IMO. Enjoyed it with a Bolivar RC. :thumb:

Gordons, dear christ. Bombay Saphire as a BARE MINIMUM. Next rung up the ladder would be Hendricks. Top, or near to the top, would be Tanqueray Ten, great floral gin made with fresh botanicals unlike all other gins. A lot can also be said for Millers Gin, if you can find the Westbourne Strength variant, which is rare, then your mouth will love you forever. The Westbourne and Tanqueray Ten can be supped straight.

My sentiments exactly! It has been a long time since I have had a gin and tonic, but this thread makes me thirsty for a few and I never drink without a cigar. I think I will have to smoke a Trinidad Coloniales with it though. For some reason I think that will be a good combo.

I wouldn't go near Gordons personally. Big T is along the right lines...
I've found a Hendricks and Schweppes tonic (Britvic is shite) to go rather well with a P2 in the past.

There is no tonic but Schweppes, that's a given, I think we are just discussing the gin here.
On the subject of Sloe Gin I can't believe anyone buys it ready made when there is a perfectly good Women's institute recipe and the bushes round here are covered in the little sods come November. We made about half a gallon some 5 years back and it's coming in nicely now.
Always the first nip of the day when fishing, watching cricket or rugby, well anything really as long as I remember to charge my hip flask.
After a trip to that Yorkshire last winter I am also warming up for a large scale batch or Elderberry Gin this autumn. The blossom looks great round here so looking forward to a great crop and then laying down a few bottles.

Swap the Schweppes for a Fever Tree (as Stephan has already suggested) and you'll never go back to the horrible sweetness of a mass produced tonic...
I'm another who will avoid Gordon's as much as possible... Although it's better than the sand that comes in Beefeater bottles (though I've yet to try their 24 'premium gin'). Hendricks is a nice change-up and Plymouth is my go-to.

Oh the Navy strength Plymouth has something to be said for it. I used to live a short walk from the distillery in the barbican!

I think sloe gin might be too sweet to go with a cigar, for me. Anyone ever tried it with Canada Dry? ;)

Oops, gosh no. I must have misread, sorry. Whilst I can bore for Britain about gin I know nothing about sloe gin!
