Whats most interesting about the Cohiba Maduro5 Genio is the cappa they have been using since early '09. A bit lighter in color than the tobacco currently used on the Secretos. Still, it seems to be almost the same wrapper as was used on the PSD#5 EL and Boli PB EL. Its Colorado Maduro and rough and almost crenelated texture. These wrappers burn beautifully and they have been a plus on the Genios, despite the loss in visual appeal.

I think these are under-appreciated cigars. I suspect that they have been victimized a bit by the Cohiba marca. If these had been an extension of another marca, or given their own marca, they would likely be celebrated. These are maduro wrappers cigars that have exquisite, exotic flavors. These are not Central America Maduros, not tar bombs or explosions of nicotine, but rather complex and smooth cigars that remind each smoker of a slightly different flavor. When smokers describe the Genios, they mention, coffee, espresso, cocoa powder, black licorice, madeira. I even heard one guy say it reminded him of his mother's burnt roast beef gravy.

I like these cigars and I suspect that we will discover they didnt make as many of these in '09 & '10 as they did in '07 and '08. If that trend continues the boxes of Genios(25) might become rare items. I think that would be a shame.

Enjoy your cigars.

Got a box of these from Jul '07...

Haven't opened mine yet, but had one last week from JJ Foxs...

A beautiful smoke that will just get better with age IMHO...

Cheers, HabanoSy

I have nearly finished my '07 box and each one is getting better ...seriously thinking about buying more. I do think that some maduro's only have a small smoking window ...kinda more than 2 less than 5 years. I have been disappointed with some older maduros as they see too strong/complex for my pallet.

I had a couple from the 2008 Habanos Festival and since they had passed my "minimum age" requirement recently, I tasted one.
Complex, rich and tasty flavours on top of flawless Cohiba construction made this a memorable smoke. I'm not much of a Cohiba fan, in general but the Maduro 5 is like a whole different (better) cigar. I'd consider buying a box of these if I stumbled upon one.
If the 2009 or newer versions are out there, I'd suggest trying one or two before you commit to a box, especially if you are expecting a typical Cohiba.

I recently was bought a box by a relative passing through Dubai Duty free.....I really like them...they probably will not last long enough to age.

Anyway....the box has no date code on it. Is that unusual? I assume there is no other way to work out how old they are?

I also have a box on Magicos - no date on those either.

Didnt the date come on the outer cardboard box? Im pretty sure it did on mine.

Mine too (check underneath if you've kept it).

Love all three variations of the Maduro 5, plenty of character and flavour and (so far) I've only encountered one poor one to date (plugged).

Thanks.

I indulged in one this morning on the way to work, perfect for the drive in. My last too, need to grab another box.
