View Full Version : A MOD for all seasons!

Dear esteemed Brethren and Brothers of the Leaf!

I come in peace.

Having witnessed the recent strife on the forums recently I have decided to make the ultimate sacrifice and offer my services as a potential candidate for MOD-dom, and in so-doing, prostrate myself (no, that isn't what I meant) before your kindness, begging for support in the hope you can make it happen.

I confess, my post count and term of membership is limited and recent, however, I believe the site now needs a 'new' voice of reason to pour lighter fluid on troubled waters (is that the right analogy?) and return harmony to our once welcoming and friendly forums.

http://www.freesmileys.org/smileys/smiley-fc/harp.gif (http://www.freesmileys.org/smileys.php) (Think of me as an angel of peace, bringing light and hope to where once there was darkness and despair!)

In support of my application (or is it by invitation only?) I would like to put forward the following points:

1). I speak English really good and can spell lots of unfeasibly long words like: Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious (thanks google).
2). I am of sound mind (the body might need a bit of work though) and have the evidence to prove it. My certificate of discharge from the asylum states 'has occasional lucid moments but should not be trusted around scissors'. (Can every other MOD here say the same? - I thought not).
3). I promise to uphold the 'Code of the BOTL' at all times, even if it involves deleting NSFW threads that personally brighten my day.
4). In addition, I also vow that my pathological need for attention and lust for POWER will not go to my head (even though I can't wait to have the last word in every thread I close - Muwhahaha!).
5). I will ensure that the correct use of 'smilies' in posts is adhered to at all times (Heaven forbid it gets out of hand again).

All those in favour of petitioning the 'management' to grant me the powers of a GOD! http://www.freesmileys.org/smileys/smiley-fc/angel.gif (http://www.freesmileys.org/smileys.php)
Say 'Aye'

http://www.freesmileys.org/smileys/smiley-fc/please.gif (http://www.freesmileys.org/smileys.php)

I thank yee!
Yours 'umbly

Without knowing how MOD's in a forum such as this operate so I apologise for perhaps stating the obvious but is there not some type of MOD behaviour code that exists.

What I mean is do MOD's have full freedom to post what they want or is there a set of guidelines etc that they have to follow. Or is it just down to individual's and how they respond to certain threads or posts and the actions they may take.

Again, without knowing how this forum operates, but does a code of conduct exist for the MOD's or are they allowed to self police with impunity?

I have not been here long but I can name one that needs replacing and from what I've seen you are a very good member to take up the position. No idea on the politics of this forum but if it went to a vote I'd vote for you El Catman. At least I think it might cure some of this http://www.pic4ever.com/images/3ztzsjm.gif

Just to add, I am not against MOD's at all, I think they are a big requirement in a forum, I am just curious as to whether they have different rules to follow beyond the scope of the normal members.

I might have guessed. All this arguing stuff has all been a dastardly Mod and Catador plot to goad our (in)famous Mexican into posting his 3000th post.

Well, it ain't worked Catador, the silence from Chihuahua is deafening .... an' you ain't gonna be a Mod!

From a different perspective, I suggest the following open question.

Is it right for a MOD who is involved in a thread/discussion/arguement to suddenly put on their MOD hat when they have had enough? Or should any MOD who is involved in such a thing be limited in using their MOD powers as it could be construed as abuse of their privileged position? Any other MOD not directly involved can step in and sort it out in an unbiased way.

I am sure that all MODs are unbiased without any doubt in my mind anyway.

They should also be able to settle an argument quickly and fairly before it escalates to a board war

Often by pm and closing/removing of the inflamatory thread
Perhaps with a warning to both parties :)

Im not sure a mod should start said war, that in itself should result in admin at least warning the mod...
Admins word is law....always and in this case he had spoken

I agree, but what happens when they are one of the parties involved, should they have the right to end the arguement as a MOD when in fact they are directly involved in it?

How long before this thread is shut down because of a lack of agreement with the content? It's much easier to close a thread & have your say after it is closed than it is to sustain a reasoned argument.:(

Were as members are the voice of a forum, Moderators are trusted to be the spokesmen of said forum. I think it was in bad taste what was said to Jenady, as has been stated sarcasm doesn't work very well when typed, and maybe that was the goal, but that one post has potentially given this forum a bad name. I'm all for Cat to be a mod, he's of sound mind, oh hang on.......

The key I think is being able to decide when a (debate) has disintegrated into an (arguement) .... which in turn is becoming more personal.

Then, yes the Mod should be trusted to terminate a thread if that is what they believe at that time is the right thing to do.

On TJ's behalf I vote 'AYE'!
He'd do it himself, except he's gone on another mystical journey of self-discovery after eating one of them Merciless Peppers of Quetzlzacatenango (Grown deep in the jungle primeval by the inmates of a Guatemalan insane asylum), so far he's found 25 Pesos and a half eaten 'Twinky'. Also, I heard that smoking a Nepalese Culebra he got sent from a BOTL in Amsterdam has 'put the great one down'.

After all without moderators forums will inevitably be plagued by anarchy and unrest. :biggrin1:

Quite right!
As I understand it (Just had a copy of the 'Mod-eraters Handbook' emailed to me), the MOD's have an annual meeting to discuss: Rules, code-violators, remuneration packages (Half a peck of rough cider a month, and all the peanut M&M's your dentist will permit).
This years meeting was apparently at Stonehenge at dawn on the Summer Solstice, Deano bought every one a druids costume and a bacon and egg sandwich.

They should be impartial, objective, setting an example for the majority, and sacrificing themselves for the greater good. I am of course speaking in generic terms.

Yes, That's what I've been told too.

Think of the MOD's as a Jedi Council of war.
TJ is the Chancellor http://www.freesmileys.org/smileys/smiley-sw014.gif (http://www.freesmileys.org/smileys.php) , Deano - Yoda http://www.freesmileys.org/smileys/smiley-sw006.gif (http://www.freesmileys.org/smileys.php), and CJ - Mace Windu http://www.freesmileys.org/smileys/smiley-sw005.gif (http://www.freesmileys.org/smileys.php) etc.

We choose to post here, nobody forces us. If I were a mod I may feel quite insulted by this thread (even though I know no malice was intended).

IMHO it is entirely up to the mods and owners how they choose to run their forum and entirely up to the other members if they choose to post.

Yes there are plenty of annoyed members at the moment but I'd just like to throw a little calming influence in here. On other forums I've often seen "right to free speech" claimed by trolls & used by mod's (incorrectly) not to remove posts that in all reality would be better unseen.

It's true, I was thinking about posting something like that myself.

As much as I personally feel that things can get out of hand on this forum and some things should not be said and some things should be. At the end of the day this is a provate forum which is owned by one individual (that we know of). He can make the rules and in effect do what he wishes to.

Nobody is being forced to read/post here so if we do not like it then we can leave. We are all BOTL but that does not mean we have a right to be involved in how things are run. But we are allowed to have a say in how we think things should be run.

Full circle...........Deano is the owner and senior BOTL. What he says goes...end of story.

Woman: Well 'ow'd you become king then?
(holy music up)
Arthur: The Lady of the Lake - her arm clad in the purest shimmering samite, held aloft Excalibur from the bosom of the water, signifying by divine providence that I, Arthur, was to carry Excalibur. THAT is why I am your king!
Man: (laughingly) Listen: Strange women lying in ponds distributing swords is no basis for a system of government! Supreme executive power derives from a mandate from the masses, not from some... farcical aquatic ceremony!
Arthur: (yelling) BE QUIET!
Man: You can't expect to wield supreme executive power just 'cause some watery tart threw a sword at you!!
Arthur: (coming forward and grabbing the man) Shut *UP*!
Man: I mean, if I went 'round, saying I was an emperor, just because some moistened bint had lobbed a scimitar at me, they'd put me away!
Arthur: (throwing the man around) Shut up, will you, SHUT UP!
Man: Aha! Now we see the violence inherent in the system!
Arthur: SHUT UP!
Man: (yelling to all the other workers) Come and see the violence inherent in the system! HELP, HELP, I'M BEING REPRESSED!

It's definitely true that this is no democracy, and let's give thanks for that; in my view, democracies aren't formed because people like one another, but precisely because people don't want to submit to people they can't stand or, which is probably worse, who can't stand them. Indeed, I came and I've remained here precisely because I like the people, the way the forum is run, and, to use an imprecise word, the general vibe of openness, playfulness, truthfulness, and fairness. It seems to me, thinking from that point of view, the rules that a moderator ought to be under would simply be those that best maintain the spirit of the forum itself, which is, as has been said, up to Deano, and which seems to be working itself out.

And, because it is my favorite scene, one cannot forget this reason for avoiding democracies:

Moderators should not be held to the same standards as "regular members" but rather be held to a HIGHER standard as they represent the entire board and how it is viewed here and all across the interwebs. They should definitely never be condescending to members who are only trying to be nice, generous, thoughtful and kind.

Especially considering the activities that brought all this on has brought QUITE a few new members, which equals more traffic, which equals a higher possibility of making more money through advertisements and increased traffic.

I have faith in the admin and it seems things have been squashed and hopefully the proper apologies been made and any misunderstandings sorted out.

When I first came here, I was (and am still) excited to see a new large group of very nice folks who have been very insightful and impressive in their knowledge and in turn, brothership of the leaf.

That being said; where is my holy hand grenade?

QUOTE]

Don't be so sure in what you are saying here. What would give you the idea that this forum is designed to increase traffic for the purpose of more advertisers or money? Deano has been very selective and very purposeful in who he allows to advertise on this forum and if he wanted to make money off of this forum he certainly would have a barrage of advertisements strewn all about.

When you look around this forum make note of the fact that this forum is not small. What makes it different from other forums is that it is not designed to generate income for its admin. For that you should be thankful.

As for moderators being held to a higher standard: It is insulting to argue that moderators are not allowed to engage in the conversations on this forum or to express their opinions. Sure I may start a squabble every so often, but that is not a crime. My job is to make sure posts and threads follow the rules. I understand that this does not mean that I am exempt from the forum rules, but I'm pretty sure I haven't broken any. That's why I can say what I say and you can say what you say and no one has any hard feelings over it. Rules make us all happy! :fencing:

Enjoy your stay here, and beware of O.F.A.C. (I think he's out to get some of us...):smoke:

It's purely coincidence that I'm posting as Larry has just chipped in.

I've missed most of the melee over the last two days as I've not been able to get on here consistently. It has been a fractious time for sure.

This forum is something I signed up to for a bit of fun and a sense of commonality in schmoking fat cigars. WHen I was invited to mod, I accepted without thinking things would slide into the mud at times and certainly didn't sign up to an 'us and them' scenario, which tbh at times can feel apparent from certain quarters: which is daft. Cyber aquaintances have suffered as a result of such attitudes which I feel has detracted from the very reason I, and members, signed up for.

I would echo Larry's sentiment about being able to voice an opinion, personally and without recourse to any forum status, as I have done previously on a couple of occassions. I've also expressed an opinion elsewhere that the recent spat could have been initially handled differently. But that is opinion and certainly shouldn't affect jack in any relationship.

The soulman has a good take on things.

And lets all remember, it's a cigar forum:)

Edit: not completey topical, but just expressing some feelings.

Sorry for the rant. By no means did I intend to insult you or any other moderator, I was merely stating I believed moderators enforce the rules therefore should know them best (although all members need to know them and abide by them).

Without awesome moderators, I know places like other forums I am on would be no fun as some of them are the funniest people I know.

Again, my apologies. This dude abides :smoke:

ESO: No offence taken whatsoever (didn't even enter my teeny mind), and I wasn't having a pop at you Eso, just I guess trying to get over a bit of how difficult it can feel at times from a mod perspective. It's a wavy line to walk: in most ways you're still on here as one of the lads, but in a few others, you have to try and mediate some tricky stuff. There's an amalgamation of both, and as we've seen, that line can gets blurred from time to time.

In the big sheme of things, no has been physically hurt which is cool.

As a new member here, I feel like a bit of an outsider, but I just happened to come in at a time during a tense moment. Just my luck!

Although new, I do have some experience with moderating. I assume that the moderators were first members of this community... where friendships were made and respect was earned.

Those qualities should never be abandoned and must continue, along with the responsibilities of the title. It should never become “us versus them”, but rather a mutual respect between those that moderate and the rest of the members of the forum.

In my opinion, the “harmony” within the community is determined by all its members, but it does filter down from the top. Maintaining and displaying a high standard of respect at the “top” will encourage the rest to follow suit. My 2cents.

Oh, nothing you did prompted me to say what I did... Seems like a lack of sleep and shitty day gave me temporary jackass syndrome :der: (of which, my wife says I suffer frequently).

No thanks! I'll stick to words. Emoticons remind me of those Rebus stories (ages 6-9) the teacher made me read in grade school. Didn't like 'em then either.

To each his own I guess!
