I struggled in this morning, which was a bit foolish in retrospect ( nearly slewed off the road at one point ) but now the weather seems to have eased off slightly, getting stuck here is my biggest worry - sleeping in a portacabin is not something I want to add to my life experiences.

Down here in SE Kent - at work in Ramsgate - the snow is thin and pathetic. They normally close schools as soon as someone picks a flower, so I'm disappointed to be here and not homeward bound.

The kids, needless to say, are high as bloody kites.

It's in the air here in Cardiff but it's not settling. VERY cold though. I've just done a H&S inspection of a workshop for my course and even though we were indoors I couldn't feel my hands by the end of it. Most hazardous!

I'll ask my boss tomorrow about the legality of 'forcing' you to come into work or take it as holiday, if you like. I'm likely to get a fairly impartial answer from him.

Yeah. That "forcing" holiday thing seems very dodgy, Pant.

Sorry to have a rant but I will...

WHY! if we have a little snow in this country...in winter?? does the place come to a stand still??? Now me being a skiier and go to many places that have loads of the white stuff, I also see them getting on with life just great!?!?!

But here... we shout SHIT! Raods and rail close and it's in the news for the next 24hrs???:der: (and we knew it was coming!!)

Rant over, sorry loads of snow here to and I have just driven home from Devon....

Having a cigar now..

I hope it's a blockbuster for you after that journey.

And - YES - the trauma is huge about snow here. In relative terms, we have no snow here!

I'm just sulking cos they didn't shut my school! :biggrin1:

Bryan - living in Kent I would have thought the snow would have hit you worse! Here in N. Essex we've had about 4 inches of the stuff, and my school has been shut all day and (if rumours are to be believed) will be shut tomorrow as well!

HAHAHAHAHA!

Sorry to take the piss, but a whole 4inches???

God help us....

Not that I don't think it's good for you to have a day off..:41:

well for me at least Id rather be at work I allready have a weeks worth of work backed up waiting for me and now another days worth!, i work in Central London and live on the outskirts and no trains. I think what makes this worse and maybe why my employer has the arse over it all is when this happens no one turns in, and I mean no one, he told me he was the only one in today which is a joke when 50% of the people you work with could walk to work.

Yep - and yes I know, the amount of snow we've had doesn't warrant it. It's at times like these I love such phrases as "health and safety concerns"!

I work with car insurance claims, can you imagine how busy it was today, every claim "policy holder skidded on snow" i love the snow but i hate that it makes me have to do something in work ha ha.

In my area ie along the border between Northern Ireland and Donegal aka Sleepy Hollow, we have got away with it sligltly where snowfall amounts are concerned. Flurries of snow have been on n off during the day interspersed with the sunshine breaking through the clouds.

Well nearly everyone seems to be moaning about the snow!, for me its the best ever, i now walk off my veranda into 2 feet of snow and if you find a drift its over 8 feet tall. I took my quad boke out today and for the first time ever i managed to do a double 360 in one go adrenlin rush or what haha, i dont advise taking a 4*4 even with a huge bull bar on the front offroading in this weather lol.

Panto just to let you know, your boss cant clain it as you taking a holiday.I`m an owner of a substantial business now with a few employees and according to my paperwork it can be classed as a sick day, what would your boss call a day you had to take off if your partner or parents were badly injured in an accident? that certainly cant be called a holiday for sure!!!!

thanks ScotCuban,
what you say makes sense, I shall wait and see what is said armed with that info!

Its funny so do take the piss though, still 3 or 4 people claiming they can't get into work today.

I've just spoken to my boss (H&S coordinator) and our union rep, and they are of the opinion that you have no legal standing to back you up, as the weather is an 'Act of God'. If your workplace advise against coming in, that's a different matter, but you seem to be on shaky ground as it's you making the decision whether you come in or not. SC, what paperwork have you got that says you can't? I couldn't see anything in any of the safety acts or regs that could be applied that way-is it in employment law?

You could of course go on the angle that if you injure yourself getting there, it will cost him a hell of a lot more in sick pay and lost productivity than one day sick because you couldn't get in.

The snow is getting a lot heavier in Cardiff-my parents claim they are in a blizzard. I'm actually getting concerned about whether I will be able to get home tonight!

Dave

thanks for the info, not sure it makes a difference but it was not a case of me making a choice not to come in, rather it was not possible as no trains!
