Lo all,

Found this marvellous forum in my travels and signed up immediatly, you seem like a very knowledgeable, friendly band of folk so I thought this would be a great place to learn more about cigars.

I would say I've only recently made the decision to do so , but they've always been in my life one way or another. Me and a friend used to nick my Dad's cigars on occasion, smoking them in a ridiculously out of the way location. He had no humidor so the things were drier than Jack Dee, but I did still enjoy them.

Like many folk I never even considered a cigar could be more than something like Hamlet ( I know, I know ), but after buying some fake Cohibas from the Dominican Republic recently ( they actually weren't bad ) I got a sense of the care and passion behind it all and wanted to be a part of that.

By utter fluke I now own a fairly capable budget humidor; has a good air seal, cedar wood interior, etc, though I knew nothing about these things at the time I bought it! Also recieved my first serious purchase the other day, eleven singles from SimplyCigars ( before I saw Monty's prices, d'oh! ). My Dad is also pretty happy as he's recieved some karmic cushioning with a birthday gift of four cigars. He actually doesn't know too much himself, though he does now own a humidor, so he's excited to try them out and I look forward to broadening our palates together.

Thank you all for having me!

Welcome Garibaldi!

Nice intro. What's the story behind the name, though - are you an Italian military leader or do you just have a fondness for said biscuits?

I've only been on here a couple of weeks so I'm certainly not one of the knowledgeable folk of which you speak, but there are definitely many here.

I am just starting the process of trying to convince my Dad (a man with an appreciation of the finer things in life but a comitted non-smoker) that smoking cigars is poles apart from a filthy cigarette habit, but I have a bit of a way to go yet. He has semi-agreed to try one when I go to visit at Easter.

Oh, and Jack Dee is great. Really enjoyed the last series of Lead Baloon.

Welcome, Gari.

Torpedo up on here, Sir, and get loads of cedar matches.

You learn stuff and it's prat-like all at once here.

Here - Have a bit of my abundant rosy glow.

Looking forward to your posts.

Bryan

I am indeed named after the biscuit, it was an old IRC nick of mine, I saw loads of folk on the chat channels with ridiculously exagerrated names like MorpheusLord and decided to prod fun at them with this handle. I find a lot of forums now tend to chop off double barrelled names though, so shortened it to this to avoid 'Garibaldi Biscu-'.

I know what you mean about trying to persuade people. I find quite a few folk will have a cigar at special occassions; weddings, birthdays and the like, but the idea of smoking them regularly is pretty alien. Still, I have a friend who was impressed even with my fake Cohibas so I look forward to having him sample some of my latest additions!

Thanks Bryan, that mix of education and capering is just what I'm after. Plus any glow to aid my pallid complexion is always gratefully recieved!

Can't bear it when it's all education and no capering, Gari.
Can't be doing with that.

Hi and welcome
I feel that we are somehow distantly related because my great great ... Grandfather went over the alps with Garibaldi.

Do you have any elephants?

It's my Inner Vicar. Or maybe my wish to go all Pauline's Pens.
Should we have a Stop Smoking Challenge?
