Villigers vs Marlboro

I've had a month off from Villigers mostly due to the Kangaroo Flu preventing any chance of a coordinated inhale to mouth-savour-exhale moment. Also my tastebuds were shot away, and my nostrils were cemented in.

Like the other, it's fantastic when you lay off for a while to go back to cigars, and I've enjoyed a few cigars as if they were my favourite meals over the last week or so. Lordee, they keep me a happy man.

I stocked up before Christmas and have a nice humi-stash of quality Havanas.

At the weekend, I bought five Villagers from the Petrol Station and have had a couple on the drive-ins and -outs to gigs on Saturday and Sunday nights. They have - I am sure - knackered my throat. I can feel a check in my voice and have been clearing that catch all day.

I have to say they did taste ropey. I've 'got by' with them many a time, but I think I'm going to cut them out. I always say a cigar reminded me of a King Edward when what I really mean is a cigar tasted shit. Well... my Villagers definitely had that 'additive' taste of a King Edward.

What I'd have to do for a gig 25 miles away is to light up in the car on the way there, save the stick and light up on the way home. If I ever do that, I never leave it too long and I quite like to re-light a cigar and make it live again, even if the re-light tastes weird at first. I find once you get past that bizarre bit on the re-light, the stick goes back to normal.

I dunno. What's the solution if you can only enjoy a Havana in your car some days because of your routine?

Is it to keep 20 Marlboro in the glove box?

Will anyone admit to doing this?

Dale - I do think of good cigars and good sex in the same part of my brain, so I know exactly what you mean here.

The Villigers ARE down the lift shaft on the quality massage bench, and it becomes a question of classy girl vs slapper when you light up.

You'd suggest these as a great short Havana smoke? I've stayed mainly with Robustos - hence the name on here - and know very little about shorter Cuban smokes.

I'm in love with Ramon Allones bigger sticks so am already interested.

Its certainly my quick smoke of choice, still got bags of flavour, although they're not as (forgive the pun) robust as the RASS or D4 they are about 2 million times better than a dry cigar like a villiger. They smoke better. The draw isn't as weedy as a dry cigar and the flavour is great. They smell like a cuban. They don't have the power of a bigger cigar, but sometimes I think the flavor can be a little more interesting if not as "in your face".

I'm not a big fan of re-lighting cigars if they've had a good rest and gone cold to be honest. They just become too tart for me!

Marlboro? if anything it shoudl be Capstan Filterless! lol

Usually at a relaxed pace do me for 30 minutes, i don't like speeding my way through a smoke.

Screw Marlborough. I did a gig for Philip Morris and they were basically having meetings trying to work out how they could still addict people to tobacco when the smoking ban was in... thats cold... they weren't talking about the joy of smoking... they were talking like smack pushers!

Interesting debate, I know when I went to see my cigar retailer initially he made I up a sampler selection of cigars which included a Villiger/King Edward and a Phillie. I had several small Upmann cigars in my humidor recently along with a small Diplomaticos. If it came down to a size issue ie between a cigar or a Marlboro and I didn't have either then I would not be too upset and would be willing to adopt the patience approach. A good cigar comes to he that waits.

D, thanks for agreeing with the statement, its hard to put it in context the preference for a cigar over a cigarette. Certainly this is very much the case where I live in Northern Ireland. People would be very critical of myself in fact because I have a liking for cigars saying in their derisory fashion things like " Who do you think you are " etc.

Petit Punch maybe? I'm only suggesting as I had one the other day, but your review of the Punch Punch was pretty positive.

As a cigarette smoker, I'd suggest against just smoking fags for the sake of it (purely from an addiction potential POV). The more 'decent' cigars I smoke, the more I'm going off the taste of cigarettes. They're rubbish. JMHO.

The reference I made was effectively a rural thing, where I live in North west Ireland the sight of anyone who breaks the mould is perceived as snobbishness and delusions of grandeur to some extent. I do take your point tho about not really giving a stuff about the general consenus aired by the vox populi.

When I lived in South Yorkshire, because I have a generic (fairly boring) Southern accent, I was perceived as rich. I was thought of as someone up from London trying to take Yorkshiremen's money!

I can imagine that a cigar habit at that time would have caused major ructions! "What an effin snob!".

That's why I'm an "out" stogie cowboy around these parts.

By random selection more than design I've got a Monte no. 4 and a Por Larranaga Petit Corona lined up to try along with some more Robustos and other larger sizes. I reckon they'll go well with a quick cup of coffee when I haven't the time or inclination to smoke something larger.

I'll let you know how I get on with them, but I too would be interested in hearing more suggestions of decent Petit Coronas for comparison.

Hi Nic, you can still get Cohiba cigarettes, they have a fab taste about them. I got my uncle some and he's now hooked on them. I found them for ?4 a pack from my local Cigar shop. I have no idea how much they would be in and around London but you can still get them!!!
