Simon's thread of "Life's Ironies",
http://www.ukcigarforums.com/showthread.php?t=7024
, just gave me an idea for this thread. When watching TV, talking to friends, clients, colleagues, et al... what do you think is the most over used word that keeps popping up? A word that you just find so damn annoying in its over usage.
For me its "...ABSOLUTELY..." From BBC journalists, lecturers, interviewers, to friends and colleagues. Can something really be that absolute? :p

Oh and I forgot the other one .....
Target.
Which theses days is a euphemism for something which might be desirable but can never possibly be realised by the idiots in charge of the aim.

"Solution"
It's never just a chair these days, it's a seating solution. It's not tippex, it's an error resolution solution :p Case in point:

What does it even mean? Man, I hate management speak.
I'll second "Celebrity" usually used to describe anyone who gets their name in the paper or is on TV for 5 minutes, when in actual fact 99.9% of people described as a "Celebrity" are highly annoying, zero talented nobody's who would go to the opening of an envelope!
Sorry for the rant, just can't stand all the so called "Celebrities".

The latast expression amongst, er, "young people" seems to be"sick".
As in "Wow, sick work in the tube there, dude!"
I think it means "fab".
Could be wrong of course.

I think people can cut conversations down by 50%, especially when your in a hurry... If only they would stop saying
'err'
'um'
between every 2nd or sometimes 3rd word.. of course there are also those that use it in conversation consecutively.. as in err err err um um um..

"f***"
Now, I'm partial to a bit of swearing myself, but this word seems to be primarily used for the sake of using it, rather than to actually emphasis anything (just listen to a chav).

My greatest 'vocabulary' irritation ("of teeth gnashing, give me a machine gun and let me exterminate the bloody lot of 'em!") http://www.freesmileys.org/emoticons/emoticon-misc-001.gif (http://www.freesmileys.org/emoticons.php) is the trendy 'fashion' of the terminally tragic to deliberately mispronounce the 'TH' sound.
As in:
'I think' becomes 'I fink',
or, for a slightly longer example:
'I don't think he thought it through' becomes 'I don't fink he fought it frew'.
Once-upon-a-time, any knuckle dragging neanderthal http://www.millan.net/anims/giffar/giffar2/blook.gif who spoke like this would've been pitied or ridiculed (Jamie Rednapp - I'm looking at you), but what was once a 'Speech Impediment' has now actually become an 'Accent' for tossers wishing to sound 'Cool'.

"Cheers" when Americans say it and 'synergy'. Though the latter is used less often now, it has always struck me as shorthand for 'I have nothing to say but I must make it look like great things are happening'.
Also, 'value-added'--I see it increasingly used, and the aspect that I find absurd is that nobody defines said value in the first place.

"Hero" is overused to a point that it is now meaningless.
"British Army" because we do not have one. The laughable numbers mean it is strictly speaking a self defence force, we no-longer have a standing army.
"Royal Navy" because it is just a fishery protection fleet.
"Politician" because they are actually just a lot of self aggrandising criminals.
"Comedy" because sod all of it is funny!

Another overused term: Tragedy.
Not only is it overused, for everything bad is somehow tragic, it is used in a technically false way: the idea that the 'tragic' event stems from a fatal flaw in the character/actor is completely gone.

Though it is mostly empty. I am, however, often spoiled by my country's concept of eloquence:

She abruptly decided that she would have no more debates. One wonders why.... However, the election isn't until November, and she's the only Republican in a conservative state. As well, she signed into law the controversial though locally popular immigration law that more or less allows police to ask anyone for immigration papers, which in that state means Latinos. All told, she has a pretty good chance.
