View Full Version : A 'Nub' that dare not speak its name!

So, finally it happened, I lost my 'Nub' cherry today! (Cameroon)
I guess I didn't know what to expect.
Having read so many reports on how wonderful an experience it can be, I confess I found it something of a . . . (dare I say it?) . . . let down.
After opening up the 'box' and slipping off the protection, I inhaled its fragrant aroma, enjoying the promise of things to come, before 'punching' a hole in it and firing it up.
It's true that these babies are beautifully put together and burn like a dream, but. . . I just couldn't love it.
I think I should make it clear from the outset (in order not to offend any 'Nub lovers' out there), it's not you (the Nub), it's me.
I'm a Cuban boy through and through. They're what I started out on, my first love if you like.
It's difficult to put my finger on the problem, other than to say it's the 'after-taste' I found strange. Like someone had added a couple of Darjeeling tea leaves to the blend for a bit of fun.
This odd 'after-taste' persisted right through to the final third, I kinda got used to it, but just couldn't enjoy it.
Though I will say, in the interests of balance, I can totally understand why others love these - precisely because of their very distinctive taste.
Anyhow, to cut a sad story short - I remain unconverted.
I'm sorry, truly sorry!
The (I fear hopeless) search for an NC that can compete with a Cuban for my affections continues.

Hmmm i quite enjoy a Nub, but i think perhaps had you had one then, the Nub Habano might have been the best of the Nubs to sample its the one i enjoy the most. That said i also like Cubans but hey you know me, i also like 'anything' lets call me eggie diverse lol...
Shame you didnt like it, or maybe you liked it, but didnt fully enjoy the experience?
Nice write up about the experience too Mr cat... I think you may have opened the floodgates to being bombed by NCs.. lol Mr Shuckins.. you reading lmao

It's not that I wouldn't appreciate the gesture mind, it's just that (at my present rate of consumption), I've already got enough NC's to last nearly a year!

Eggy, prophetically replied:

to which Sir Pussmeister groaned:

I enjoy a hearty Cuban as well as the next bloke; however, I cannot, in all fairness, say that they -- and they alone -- are the cat's meow, as it were, and, apparently, as it is, for our resident tabbyman. There are multitudes of NC's which I enjoy every bit as much as an earthy, barnyard Cuban.
Thus, I don't know about The Shuckster (although I have my suspicions), but I feel as if the gauntlet has been thrown down, the glove slapped 'crosst me face, the challenge issued, as it were.
Le Chat, I happen to know where you live.

Gotta try a Habano now? Or maybe a Cain Nub?
We'll convert you eventually, even if it takes some Manchurian candidate style mind tricks!

Send your worst, Rokkitsci; kill the incurious cat.
However, we all ought to keep in mind that the Cat perhaps can't help it. Think of the rough tongue, the preference for foul tasting foods that smell of rank tuna, and the fact that he cleans himself unflinchingly with his own mouth; these would suggest a certain inability to appreciate subtlety.

Ooh I say old boy!
That's a bit strong! What?
May I remind you who penned my 'most excellent' - (ta very much) signature? (See Exhibit '1' below).
I'll wait while you read it. . . .
So. . . don't hate me. . . I'm only calling it like I See's it.
"So. . . . STOP (Don't do it). . . If you're trying to change my mind" (http://smilys.net/musik_smilies/smiley1819.gif).
You see there's a very good reason why you should forgive me and 'hold your fire' (Ban the Bomb . . Please!) . . . and it is this. . .
The case for the defence:
My-little-collection lives in two humidors (I don't count the 'Tupperdore - that's just my guilty little secret . . . shhhuussh).
One of those humidors is my 'For Best' box.
The one I use only to house the very finest examples of my favourite cigars, the ones you end up saving for special occasions.
(Ahem, forgive me - too much Macallen). . .
"The ones that transport you off into clouds of aromatic contemplation".
I.e. "The best ones".
Well. . these are the cigars that I keep in that box.
Now . . . (Here comes the 'Shocking' bit) . . . believe it or not . . . some of those cigars are 'Non-Cubans'. . . (Don't look at me like that - you make me feel dirty - it's only a couple).
BUT . . . and let's be honest here. . .
If the 'Grim Reaper' was knocking at the door. . .
About to lower the 'curtain' on the remainder of your life. . .
And you open the open the door. . . and he says:
Grim Reaper: "It's your lucky day!"
You: "Really? Does that mean your not gonna kill me?
Grim Reaper: "Oh no, I'm still gonna kill you. . . but for today only. . I'm granting you a last request first"
You: "Right just let me smoke this cigar while I think about what I'd like"
O.K. . . TRUTHFULLY . . .
'Last' cigar on Earth guys. . . you tell me . . .
"What are you reaching for?"
"Huh?"
"Well, you gonna pull them Cuban's . . . or stand their whistling 'Dixie'?
"The CASE rests! M'lud"
Right, my work is done for tonight, I'm off to have another dram before bed.
I'll be back to add the smilies tomorrow - if TJ starts complaining.

The Cat speaketh in an attempt to claw his way into a universal truth, but the Government Man has a point--one person's garbage is another cat's dinner.
But I was only playing mouse a bit--I can think of many fine puros I'd prefer over a nub if Sir Deathalot gave me such an offer.
On the other hand, I can think of many instances where a new cigar gave me pause about what I thought was my favorite, so I reserve final judgment until I have no more chances at it.

Although I love dem Nub's, fair point from Cat re Mr Reaper, from my current crop I'd grab a Monte 2.
If he does come calling, I may be posting on here for a Behike donation, as my farewell smoke though!
Come on then, the Cat's started something now, whats your current 'Reaper' smoke and you ultimate 'Farewell Smoke'
Can I start the bidding with
Current - Montecristo No.2
Ultimate - Aged Cuban Dunhill (Read so much about them)

I didn't like my first Nub, yesterday I had my third one, i am now quite liking them, for what they provide for their price. Very nice for casual smoking.
To me, its not Nub or whatever brand, NCs are NCs, I don't compare them to CCs. its like comparing New-world wine to good Grand Cru French wine, its pointness.

http://www.freesmileys.org/smileys/smiley-eatdrink060.gif (http://www.freesmileys.org/smileys.php)I couldn't agree more!
(Though it pains me to admit my 'Grim Reaper' wine would also be French - after all, it's not as if the little buggers weren't 'snooty' and 'smug' enough already).
Plus, I think I missed out a crucial point in my meanderings last night.
The G-man is correct! (http://smilys.net/aengstliche_smilies/smiley1807.gif It was bound to happen sooner or later).
My taste buds are what they are, doesn't make 'em right or wrong, they jus knows what they like. YMMV (Your mileage my vary). It's all good!
Also, it's not as if I've got a 'beef' with NC's.
I have a variety, including: RP's, Padrons and a Man o' War - 'Ruination' (excited about trying that onehttp://www.freesmileys.org/smileys/smiley-excited002.gif (http://www.freesmileys.org/smileys.php)cheers Eric!), it's just that I only smokes 1 or 2 cigars a week. . .
(O.K. more if it's a herf or a holiday or some other worth while memorable occasion - but not many more)
. . . and there's a long list of Cuban's that I've not got around to trying yet (I'm talking regular production, aged, El's, RE's etc), before I get started experimenting with NC's.
(Hey, maybe I should publish my wish-list - You never know Christmas is coming).
Anyhow, because I don't smoke that many, I find myself swayed by 'quality over quantity' (God, I'm digging a bigger hole for myself), so, for example, I'd rather purchase 1 x Siglo VI than buy 2 x 'Nub's'...
(The Cameroon's anyway - I've not smoked my Habano yet - you never know, I may change my mind)
... even though it might be argued that the 'Nub's' are better value* (*Depending on how you measure it).
But that's just me. No slur intended - and non taken (I hope).
So, in closing 'Brothers'. . .
I beg you, spare me from any misguided NC 'missiles' - there are far more worthy and deserving 'targets' for your generosity and wisdom than the poor, taste-bud challenged Cat.
http://smilys.net/smiley_geschenke/smiley2339.gif
Unless of course we're talking a:
Edmundo Dante El Conde
Partagas 8-9-8
Montecristo No. 4 Reserva (Damn that Big T fellow)
Some aged or sexy El number, etc, etc.
P.S. Lets not forget the 'Peanut-Butter' M&M's (Something that you 'colonists' have that we don't - if it makes you feel any better).

I do believe that the Puss-in-Boots has finally formulated his position clearly, if not with concision, alas. After yesterday's smoke, I do believe that I would meet The Grim Creeper with a Partagas 898. Not only a beautiful puro, but a long lasting one.
