A tad above price range - and a little 'left-field', but I've been a big fan of the Cambeltown region of distilleries for a while now.

Highly distinctive flavour profile - suited to cigars too (IMHO).

This is regarded as among the best (unless you want to spend stratospheric amounts).

Interested to read others suggestions.
The sheer variety of choice can be daunting.

A good suggestion from El Cat, and as he says, choices are virtually endless.

If it were my money, I'd be going for this:

What does he normally drink - that may help guide your choice.

depends on the ol' fella's taste. there's a speyside for the mild pallette and an islay for the hardcore. plenty of aged examples in that price range. find out what he prefers 1st mate

A flavour map (http://www.scotchmaltwhisky.co.uk/whiskyflavourmap.htm) may help. For example, the Clynelish 14 (http://www.thewhiskyexchange.com/P-1665.aspx) is right in the middle and really nice, albeit below your price range. I have heard the Glenmorangie Nectar D'or (http://www.thewhiskyexchange.com/P-7068.aspx) is great. According to the map, if it is anything like the 10, it should be like the Clynelish but lighter?

Perhaps someone knows of a flavour map with the more exclusive malts?

hey deano,
there's plenty of mentions for scotch single malts, what about irish? bushmills 16year (http://www.thewhiskyexchange.com/P-2839.aspx) old is a smashing, easy to drink single malt (for your info, it goes great with cigars)....... as is the 1608 400th anniversary blend (http://www.thewhiskyexchange.com/P-7794.aspx)!!! quality stuff indeed.....

also, here's an absolute favourite of mine, bushmills black bush (http://www.thewhiskyexchange.com/P-2833.aspx)!!!! winner of the world whisky awards 2010, and cheap to boot!!!

May I suggest The Bruichladdich 15 year old. Now this is an Islay Malt which are traditionally peaty/iodine more hardcore, but this particular one is a lot more subtle. Lovely and complex yet not at all harsh. Better still, come round the Prince one night and we will try a few!

Had this in Campbeltown in front of a log fire don't let the label worry you 100% very smooth and mellow.

Oh Campbletowns are ok, but is your going for single, scottish malt, it has to be islay.
Someone also mentioned bunahabhain, which im a big big fan off, but what about Jura ? Origins is a lovely, rather cheap malt but how about:

I've always enjoyed a little Black bush in the winter evenings myself.

I have also enjoyed Whiskies although I can't begin to call myself an expert. Balvenie is wonderful and also Glenfarclas which if you can say it, you clearly haven't been drinking.

Always up for a tasting session in the back bar at Boisdale if you are having difficulty making your mind up!

Best advice so far IMHO, see if you can get your dad talking the variance is huge, I've spent countless hours over the years trying to sample them all :tonguecheek::decision::top:

I did a big post about whisky in Bambini's thread which might interest you, but as has been said, it depends on your father's tastes.

If it were me I'd go with the Talisker 18yo (http://www.thewhiskyexchange.com/P-4840.aspx) as it's simply an outstanding whisky IMO. If he might prefer something a little sweeter and less peated but still rich then I really like The Dalmore: Black Isle (http://www.thewhiskyexchange.com/P-6346.aspx). If he may prefer something with a bit more of a peaty kick then you can't go wrong with Lagavulin '94 Distillers Edition (http://www.thewhiskyexchange.com/P-12869.aspx) which is actually the whisky we had in the quaich at our wedding.

Springbank of any age is an outstanding malt and different when compared to Highland malts.:hail:

Difficult to know what to recommend, but the Mortlach 16 YO from the Flora and Fauna release is an excellent Speyside whisky which is not commonly known to most malt whisky drinkers.....except those in the know.:first:

Yeah, I'll give it to you, this (http://www.thewhiskyexchange.com/P-4085.aspx) is a fantastic whisky. I got a bottle from the recent trip to the Talisker distillery. I'd still take my earlier choices over it, but the world of whisky would be a lot less exciting if everyone agreed on the best ones! :41:

Edit: Not sure if your father also likes cigars but Dalmore also offer a Cigar Malt as below

As a whisky head and a man who loves a fine Islay, I would recommend this:

It's a lovely peaty experience and an excellent choice for the money.
