Well, I just invested in a new lighter. A Colibri Belmont, to be precise, for ?25. What with the smoking ban and a hostile home as regards cigars, I figured it was definately time I got myself a decent torch-flame OUTDOORS lighter to replace my cheapy one (which broke, as do all cheapy things).
So what do you guys light with? Tapers, lighters, matches ...which brands would you recommend? How important is the initial lighting when it comes to the overall burn, and what gives you the best results?
I say this because I seem to have difficulty with uneven burns and tunneling whenever I try something larger than a 42g (I puff too much=tunnel, too little= goes out. Dang. Accompanied by uneven sides.). But then again, I'm new[ish] to this game! Seem to be fine with most Coronas though. Very puzzling. I smoke only a few times a week, so I don't get much "practice".
Ta guys

I use an IM Corona wide flame lighter. The way I light up is to gently "toast" the end of the cigar by turning it just above the flame, then put it in my mouth and hold lighter near but not on the cigar so that I draw the flame to it rather than on it whilst turning the cigar to light it evenly.

Aye, I get the method, but even if it starts nice I seem to have problems. I think once I finally get the new torch-flame lighter I will have better control when I'm lighting outdoors -hopefully I'll be able to tackle it then.

I have a double jet flamed lighter with incorparated cigar punches 3 to be exact its a great lighter, colibri are vey good lighters too, good investment there Tom;)
I tend to do the toast method by holding the jet flame lighter about 2-3 inches away from the cigar then slowly rotating the cigar then blowing the end to see the red orange glow, then you know your ready to go & should stay an evenish burn all the way through.
Depends on the quality of the construction of the cigar too.
What lighter gas do you all use? ultra refined is probably the best as it wont clog up your prized lighter.

I quite like a naked flickering flame as opposed to a hot burning lighter - though I have both.

I have a can of Colibri butane at home (At home! Damn! How do I get that to Ireland in my weekend hand luggage?) which I happened to have from before.
Nice to know Colibri are as well thought of as retailers hype them to be -I'll see about giving a bit of a review once I've got it. Resources like that will hopefully keep this forum expanding.
Naked flickering flames are much prefered indoors deano, but unfortunately I'm outside most of the time (grr smoking ban). Next year I'm renting a house with a few others, we'll see how they like cigar smoke.

I have a Euro jet 2 flamed lighter which has 3 incorparated cigar punches in it...
As for lighting my cigars, I prefer to toast the end until white ash has formed and then slowly draw at first...works for me.....

I use the nice long matches, before i light up i always pop the lighting end of the cigar in my mouth to moisten the cigar first,i find it will burn slower and more evenly. But i do have many types of lighters to,but i do like to the good ole lighting stick best.:)

You might all call me a heathen, but I often use this:

Quite a nice flame like a good match.
