After reading Simon's reports. I've gone and booked a trip with the GF to Cuba.
We have 3 nights in Havana, 3 in Trinidad, 6 in Varedaro.
Now what do I bring back?
I'm gonna re-visit Simon's reports for reports on where to eat, but if there are any recommendations of cheap places I'd appreciate them (Varedero is all inclusive so less important).
Also what is suitable clothing so as not too look like a tourist with no clue.

Nic Wing's top tips for Cuba #138 - Take your own tea bags, Cuban tea is shite!
In terms of dressing don't wear a cowboy hat. Just dress normal, the Cuban's are really nice, if you have a cigar in your mouth you will be offered cheap Cohiba's every two steps. But the people who want to talk to you and generally friendly and charming.

Just in addition to Simon's perfect reports :
Havana : I'd recommend "El Templete" Restaurant in the harbour, near Hostal Conde de Villanueva, a great place for food and wines and the prices are not really over the top. Never been disappointed there.
For traditional Cuban dishes in a great atmosphere : "El Aljibe"
For a great city view from across the harbour : "La Divina Pastora" or "Los 12 Aposteles"
Trinidad : Paladar "La Nueva Era" - very interesting, good food, great ambience.
For dessert or dinner : directly across the street from "La Nueva Era", good rum, a nice show, owner Cesar and the staff very knowledgeable and helpful, a great patio, fantastic decor and down to earth.

If you dont mind me asking...what was the ball park figure on costs?
All this talk of Cuba is giving me the itch to make a stop there first on my next trip back to LA!

Well done Eddie! Wasn't expecting such a quick repsonse but mighty glad your taking the plunge. Would advise packing something for the cooler nights. Sure we'll all expect to hear about your trip in detail afterwars, especially about Trinidad.

A daily diary is the key mate, otherwise the days just seem to blurr into each other & it's difficult to recall what cost what & where you had it. I have to say pro's like Nick Wing were taking far more copious notes than I.

One thing I'd like to do is to visit a to tobacco farm. Its not an option from Havana, so is there one close to Trinidad? Or am I best trying to arrange something in Varedaro?

Eddie
I'm going in October and would be very interested to hear about Trinidad as that is one of the places we are considering for a couple of days.
We flew to Havana last year for two days and that was fantastic.
I didn't visit a cigar factory last year so would like to do that if possible.
We are staying in Cayo Coco this time, we were in Guadalavarca last year.
Enjoy your holiday, when do you go?

I went on the 2 day overnight tobacco trip last year. You got a trip round a factory, wander round Havana, tropicana and the following day to a tobacco farm. Lots of travelling time on the coach but a great trip.

You will love Havana, tho the first couple of nights you will have to adjust to time difference, people are great , where in Varadero are you staying the beaches are amazing the sea is very warm. Plenty of places to buy smokes and as you know never off the street. :849:
