I always smoke with a drink.
I think just trying as many different cigars as you can is the best way to find out what you really like.
With me, its a strange thing, like most people I tend to like the most expensive cigars!!! lol. Saying that though I do quite happily smoke cheaper everday sticks, as there are quite a few out there that are very nice for the money.
So basically, enjoy the journey of discovery!!

Ooh...advice...well...buy loads more cigars, smoke 'em and see what sticks (that's all I've been doing, anyway)
That might sound like a cop-out, but until you find something that does click, every thing's a guess...

Would you say to buy a humidor to keep the cigars in if I'm gonna buy a few and smoke away :-)

A Humidor of some sort is a must. If you don't want to spend a lot of money on one, look up tupperdore, basically just a tupperware with a good seal, Hygrometer and something to keep the humidity at around 65-70%

Tupperware [needs a good seal]
http://www.google.co.uk/search?q=humidor&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8&aq=t&rls=org.mozilla:en-GB:official&client=firefox-a#ds=pr&pq=humidor&hl=en&sugexp=eppshb&cp=4&gs_id=g&xhr=t&q=tupperware&pf=p&sclient=psy&client=firefox-a&rls=org.mozilla:en-GB%3Aofficial&biw=1366&bih=603&tbm=shop&source=hp&pbx=1&oq=tupp&aq=0&aqi=g4&aql=f&gs_sm=&gs_upl=&bav=on.2,or.r_gc.r_pw.&fp=e67052e80effdac3
Humijars [basically a presevation jar will do, I use a le parfait jar as an 'overflow' from my porper humidor, to store my cheap cigars]
http://www.google.co.uk/search?q=humidor&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8&aq=t&rls=org.mozilla:en-GB:official&client=firefox-a#ds=pr&pq=le+parfait&hl=en&sugexp=eppshb&cp=0&gs_id=33&xhr=t&q=le+parfait+jars&pf=p&sclient=psy&client=firefox-a&rls=org.mozilla:en-GB%3Aofficial&tbm=shop&source=hp&pbx=1&oq=le+parfait&aq=0&aqi=g3&aql=f&gs_sm=&gs_upl=&bav=on.2,or.r_gc.r_pw.&fp=e67052e80effdac3&biw=1366&bih=603
Humidors;
http://www.google.co.uk/search?q=humidor&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8&aq=t&rls=org.mozilla:en-GB:official&client=firefox-a#q=humidor&oe=utf-8&rls=org.mozilla:en-GB:official&client=firefox-a&um=1&ie=UTF-8&tbo=u&tbm=shop&source=og&sa=N&hl=en&tab=wf&bav=on.2,or.r_gc.r_pw.&fp=e67052e80effdac3&biw=1366&bih=603
Basically, If your just starting out and dont need to store that many cigars a 3ltr le parfait jar is pretty good, you can get one for about £9 off ebay etc and not only are the perfect for my cheaper sticks, but it looks pretty good too [better than tupperware anyway, if appearence is something your interested in?]

Any of the above will do the job to a slightly greater or lesser degree... just depends what you want to achive and what you want to spend really.

Welcome mate :)
My simple advice would be that samplers are a good way of trying a few brands, REs and LEs and so on (specialy edition type stuff) are great to try but don't expect them to be a trustworthy representation of that brand as they're often quite different from the standard lines, and as well as samplers it's worth getting some 3/5 packs or even a box of something you find you like as trying the same cigar over time will give you an idea of the variation you can get, even in the same box, and especially over time, months can make a difference let alone years.
And enjoy :)

I'm near sheffield :) I never found that I had to break in my mouth, that sounds like something from a prison movie :D
Best tip I can give anyone starting out is light your cigar evenly, try not to inhale and smoke slowly :)

Sorry, been away from site for a few days (there's a blog about why) so didn't see your reply.
A meet up would be interesting, I can find a decent pub with an outside area for a smoke if you fancy.
