  • Nub...Swings And Roundabouts

I recently bought one of the newer Nub sampler packs (with the maduros included). I bought a sampler last year and found that the only marques I enjoyed were the Cameroon. The rest, I found were a bit ho-hum; not bad, but nothing spectacular.

Anyway, after twelve months or so of dithering, I ordered the new sampler to see if the Cameroon was as pleasant as I remembered...it really wasn't.

Yesterday, I lit up one of the Maduros and it was gorgeous. Sweet, smooth with just the right amount of velvety smoke. It's a pity I can't say the same for the box pressed Cameroon torpedo I attempted today.

The pre-draw was nice with a bit of wood, nut and slight sweetness, but after toasting and lighting, it was downhill from there on, so much so infact, I couldn't finish it.

The draw was very loose and the first few puffs had harsh and bitter smoke stinging my throat. Underneath was a slight tarry taste which did die down along with the bitterness but the harshness remained. The burn line while not a disaster wasn't exactly straight either.

I was just wondering if anyone else had ran into the same problem with Nubs or with any other brand for that matter?
Could it just have been a fault with my toasting and lighting technique? Although I've been dabbling with cigars for a while, I'm still very much a newbie.

I'd love to hear your thoughts or any advice on it all.

    Many thanks chaps.

    The Little NuB!

Muchacho, I tried several of the so-called NuBs when they first came out. They generated quite a bit of discussion around these parts back then. TBH, I found them to be....well, underwhelming.

But that's just me, Perro, el Perro.

No, you can't ruin an entire cigar just by toasting the foot. This Nub could have been too young, or it came from a bad batch, or… there are dozens of reasons…

I have tried all the different Nubs in the smaller size. To me the Habano/Sungrown was good, the Maduro decent, and I didn't like the Connecticut and the Cameroon.
The Connecticut was quite bitter, I couldn't finish it. All of them were well constructed but they had a very loose draw, so they produced too much of a too thin smoke.

I tried the NUB range when they came out as it was around the time I started smoking cigars and there was a lot of publicity going about. As with Smallclub, I probably found the Habano to be the best of them but they really didn't impress. Even in the world of NCs there are far better smokes, for not much more you could have a Fuente Hemingway short story or Oliva Serie V Belicosos.

I too have had hit and miss experiences with Nubs, although the Cain Nub Habano is fantastic, so much so I have a box ageing nicely in the humi

I agree the Habano is the best but still the best of a bad bunch.

For me they have ranged from 'meh' to 'bleurgh'

Had to toss a Cameroon at the halfway point it was so bad. I have a couple more in the humidor so I'm hoping they might get better with a little age

Thanks for the contributions gentlemen. I think the above phrase "Meh to bleurgh" kind of sums it up. After I'd chucked it, I kept saying to my other half "I'm really not happy with that...that's spoilt my night that has" to the point that I think she was ready to place my humidor where the sun doesn't shine.

Having a good old fashioned Monte No 2 tonight to make me feel better and to give her some peace.

                      hmmm interesting.
I was always tempted to try one despite normally sticking to cubans.
Doesnt sound like I have missed a huge amount, I really do generally think cubans are the way to go. Thats not to say that theyre arnt nice NC's about, there definatley are, but your more likely to get a baddie than a goodie.

                      JMHO.

Brother El Catador,Tonight I did walk on the right hand path of the Cuban and found it more than a bit lovely. Ahhhhhh!
Having said that, I shall be falling from grace tomorrow with the sinful but downright tasty Hemingway Short Story. What can I say? I'm a cigar whore.

I just ordered a box of Short Stories. Never tried one before so a bit of a gamble but I've seen a lot of good things on this forum. Crossing my fingers

I would disagree. Definitely memorable - but in the wrong way
