Bit of a result at the weekend, wandering round london we ended up in the Whiskey Exchange and the missus very generously bought be a bottle of the Glen Ord 25yr old (I've had the 28 which was amazing but Jim wotsisfaces whiskey bible scored the 25 higher! (I know these were certain years and yada but a guide of some sort is always nice)) and a bottle of the Caol Ila Natural Cask Strength, been meaning to give Caol Ila a try and tend to prefer the cask strength releases.

So yeh, Basically brilliant, anyone had these?

    Nice haul there sir!
I've not tried any expression of Glen Ord (!) but I can vouch for the cask strength Caol - lovely stuff.

As a matter of interest do you water your cask strength or take it neat? I always go neat as I like the punch.

Cask Strength Caol Ila is top class. Like drinking nice peaty olive oil!

Trying the Caol Ila and Oh wow well in answer to your question I like it neat, I can understand a drop or two of water but after that I tend to get the same feeling as drinking overly diluted squash!

This is lovely stuff, lots of smoke, definitely some orange peel in there, and a massive helping of tar! Then you swallow it and your tongue starts to sting, then you breath in and it burns, and it's brilliant!

Doesn't sound great when I read that back tho

Ah sadly close but no cigar! Honestly haven't done much whiskey and smoking at the same time for a while for some reason, been cutting back on the booze anyway so guess that's it, wouldn't really know what to pair it with..

Do you go for the heavy smoke to combine with the heavy flavours, so a young rass or an aged lusi or some such, or try and add completely different flavours like the fruitiness of an aged RyJ Ex 4 might go well with the sweet start of the drink (which doesn't last that long before the tar kicks in ) ???

I'd definitely recommend Glen Ord to anyone who likes their whiskey with a good kick! I've only tried the 28 so far and just got the 25 but if the 12 is anything like it should be given how these are then it'd definitely be worth a go! Plus it comes in a pretty neat decanter like bottle
