  • Sorry I missed... almost everyone.

Back from a couple of weeks at school in Havana followed by a week on the sunny Varadero beach. Smoked waaay more cigars than I normally do at home but not excessive for this sort of trip.
As a 'poor schoolboy' I obviously don't move in the exalted circles that you other Cuba visitors occupy, hob-knobbing with the rich and famous and smoking all those Edicions Limitadas and giant Behikes so I failed to bump into those who were in town for the Partagas fest.
    Except for Smokey MO!
But then, one is likely to encounter him at almost any place and time. Nice to hang out with him for a while.

On the non-social side, my 50 Lanceros (Laguitos No. 1) were resting comfortably awaiting my arrival in Santos' humidor and they smoked like a dream. Managed to bring 25 home. Pre-ordering, to give the cigars time to 'rest and dry' is the key to customs.
A friend bought some of the new H. Upmann Half Coronas and gave me one to try. Very tasty little smoke. With a few years of age, these could be the ideal 'morning coffee' smoke.
Found a box of Bolivar Corona Gigantes from the highly desirable 2008 production. FNP.
My first experience of the 2011 stocks was with a box of Monte Petit Edmundos. They have some of the darkest wrappers I've seen on production cigars other than the Cohiba Maduro 5s. Already very tasty and will only get better.

    Viewed some true cigar porn:
Santos is rolling a number of different sizes (all huge) of maduro wrapped cigars for a Saudi prince. Don't know where he sits on the Royal Family tree (there are hundreds of princes) but he seems like a nice guy. Some of the smokes are 64 ring. All are over 9 inches long, including a super piramides. Yikes! I saw the molds-all custom made for these big sizes. Santos should be able to afford a new car soon.

Great stuff Bob. Funnily enough I have a couple of bundles from Santos quietly sleeping

Sorry to have missed you in Havana cbob, smoked a few of Santos's myself, nice cigars. Spent a nice afternoon with him, Nino, Jose and Rob in his shop. Are you going at festival time in February?

I've got a great cigar collection - it's actually not a collection, because that would imply I wasn't going to smoke every last one of 'em.

                Nice pic!
It's a great place to hang out. I was there every afternoon for a couple of weeks as I was staying in the Comodoro bungalows. No plans to ever do February again. Seen one festival and you have pretty well seen them all and I don't have the budget to just fly down for the ambiance. Maybe in another (dream) life!

Sorry to have missed you in HAV, we were, as Andy mentioned, at Santos and smoked a few of his cigars.

In fact : sorry to hear you were at the Comodoro, as I was there as well in a bungalow near the pool and the "Sprachcaffe" ... until I decided to leave it for a casa particular and have a better stay & time.

                  Wouldn't book that place again.

I understand what you mean Nino.
For me, it was a good value and the only negatives were the tiny fridge and the agua tibio in the shower. Great views on the ocean side and close enough to school to walk home every day. Having La Escogida as my 'local' smoking lounge for a couple of weeks was a plus. If I wasn't getting a deal through Sprachcaffe, I'd probably have stayed at Chateau Miramar, although it's getting a bit 'tired' too.

Did you notice all the Russians?
Aeroflot is now doing daily flights to Havana and the flight crews stay at Comodoro, so a lot of tourists do too. They don't buy cigars but do buy vast quantities of rum!
And the parties (with extra-loud singing) went to 3-4 AM. Glad my bungalow was away from the bar.
Not just Havana: my resort in Varadero was probably 70% Russians. Party animals!!
