  • Searching for the right tobacco

Just had my first pipe today - and absolutely loved it. The ritual. The pace of it. It was everything I hoped...

Apart from the fact that, as a cigar smoker, I'm used to a 'heavier' amount of smoke / volume of smoke in the mouth.

I was just trying St Bruno today, as a starter. So, hardly a real quality tobacco. Could anyone recommend my first 'proper' tobacco please - one that really delivers a much fuller smoke? Although I know pipes are different from cigars - I'd still like a more robust mouth-feel.

    Thanks very much

    hey scruffy,
sounds like you had a good experience!!! btw, most pipe smokers would class st bruno as a 'proper', quality pipe tobacco!!! i myself have only had petersons luxury blend, connoiseurs choice and old dublin!!!

my father in law swears by his own blend of condor mild and mellow golden virginia...... each to their own i guess! lol!

I have only tried a few tobaccos but the one I like the best so far is Thomas Radfords Sundays Fantasy, a light, fragrant and well flavoured tobacco, has a nice room smell. I will be buying some more of this, worth a try.

I find St Bruno flake very good!

For a more robust mouth-feel, try Dunhill Nightcap, or, if you don't like the "smoky" taste of latakia, Samuel Gawith Full Virginia Flake.

But keep in mind that no pipe tobacco in the world will give you the abundant, thick, multi layered, satisfying smoke provided by a habanos.

Ok, great, thanks - I'll try those

I also just bought some Dunhill London Mixture today, so will let you know if worth a try

Selfridges staff: incredibly helpful - worth popping in to their tobacco dept if you haven't been already

I like Mcbaren Cube, davidoff blue mix and local blends. Just try and get a sampler from a local tobacconist. Also try my smoking shop online. Very good selection.

Just tried London Mix (Dunhill) - really excellent and proper amounts of rich smoke to enjoy. Recommended.

I like squadron leader. Just the right amount of latakia bite to make for a really tasty smoke.

I find plugged punch petite punch that are finely chopped and packed make a very nice full smoke and its better for your wallet than tossing it.

I think you've done well with dunhill, most of their current blends feature latakia which is perfect for a good robust smoke, they use nice high quality tobacco too! I like chopped cigars for my pipe too, when they're unsmokable . If you have a shop nearby that sells it, you could try adding some neat latakia to really liven it up! Or you could try some thick black twist if you're feeling brave
