  • Got gifted a couple of cigars....

I got given a couple of cigars today at work by a guy who I read and corrected his PhD thesis for. Very nice surprise! Got some sort of Trinidad (I'm not an avid Trinidad smoker so I can't tell one from the other!) and a Bolivar Royal Corona.

The guy doesn't know how much I am in to cigars, and I guess at the Davidoff store they offered to precut them in case I didn't have a cutter. But they have the weirdest cut on them. I guess its a punch, but a large punch, one for Robusto sized cigars?! I have a punch but it doesn't open them up like this, also when I use my punch its not really just the cap which is cut like this. Has anyone seen this before?

I'm a very happy boy though, its not everyday you get given a couple of high end cigars

What a fantastic gesture,a real Friday bonus I'd take a punt at the Trini being a Coloniales but I'm by no means certain. And that's certainly very neatly done at the cap end isn't it,not familiar with punches myself but I perhaps ought to try one on the bigger RG's,see how I like it.Nice reward for your hard work there mate, enjoy

Thanks for your message The punch I have doesn't make a hole this big by a long shot, I guess its probably meant for smaller ring gauges. I have punched robustos and smoked them, but you tend to get a build up of black bitter semi-liquid tar (or what I'm guessing is tar?) at the opening of the hole which isn't very pleasant. I end up cutting them with a proper cutter about halfway through to get rid of it.
I'll send you a punch next time I go to my cigar store....they give them to me free

The Trinidad is a Coloniales. The cut is made with a large punch, nothing weird here. It's the cut you want when your cigar is well packed; when it's a bit loose you must use the smaller sized punch…

The punches from that shop in Geneva are too small for robustos, except if the robusto is underfilled.

                          A very nice gift.

For the larger rg's I used to punch 3 interlocking circles but since I got the Cuban crafters cutter I've stopped using the punch.
