  • Allergy Walk Fundraiser

As some of you know, my 4 year old daughter Charlee, has a severe tree nut allergy and an allergy to sesame as well. Tomorrow my family will be participating in a fundraiser walk to provide research, education and raise public awareness of this issue. I wanted to post a link to my UKCF friends in case any of you wanted to pitch in. If you want to sponsor us the link is here: http://www.foodallergywalk.org/site/...nal&fr_id=2178

Please don't feel obligated, I just wanted to put it out there to you guys because I'll be doing this tomorrow and I thought maybe there are friends on here who have a connection to this as well.

Battled with food allergies all my life, dairy, eggs and food additives were a nightmare when I was a kid. 30 years ago labeling wasn't as good as it is now and it made shopping hell for my mum.

These days as a 37 year old I still have to deal with it but its nothing like as bad. Avoiding dairy is 2nd nature and I can get away with a pizza when I want, as I know my limits. Food labeling is much better, as is what they put in most of it.

Luckily my 4 year old hasn't inherited many of my allergies. We don't give her crap (have you seen what they put in fruit shoots? And its meant to be a kids drink!) And minimise dairy and she's fine.

Good luck on the fundraiser, will send a donation shortly!

I can't imagine shopping for food without the labels we have now. As it is, even with the more explicit labeling, we tend to stick pretty close to the same foods and food brands we know are safe. I feel like our options are very limited as a result and I imagine your mum must have felt that even more so. Thanks for replying. I think that it's really cool that even on a forum dedicated to cigars a discussion about food allergies can have its place.

Gemma (my girlfriend and also on this forum) is allergic to peanuts and has to carry an epipen round as she goes into anaphylactic shock if she eats them. Luckily its only peanuts and not other nuts. The problem we have with food labelling is that it all says may contain nuts or may contain peanuts (including cabbages). AFAIK peanuts need to be listed separately but I'm not too sure if the manufacturers know this. So modern labelling may help to some extent, but its also a general arse covering exercise.

The other problem we experience is people not realising how serious peanut exposure is because people think an intolerance is an allergy. And therefor don't accept the gravity of the situation and the caution that we need to apply.

Yes that's a good point Eddie. Many people, myself included use the work allergy when they really mean intolerance. I think for me its just because 30ish years ago when I became aware of my issues myself, it was hard enough to get a GP to recognise there could be any possible connection between something you ate and physical symptoms/reactions, without getting into a debate over the correct word

The weather was beautiful today for the walk. It went off perfectly and a lot of people showed up to support the cause. I thank you guys for your support and for your comments.
